On a recent cruise, a stupid father was in an adults-only hot tub with his 3 brats and he just let the brats splash and scream and the water was going where people were walking. The crew did nothing and it was an accident waiting to happen.
Makes me wonder if parents know as a general rule, the maximum safe amount of time to soak in a hot tub will be 15 minutes in 104° F (40° C) water and up to 30 minutes if the water temperature is between 95-100° F.
I fault the cruise line for not enforcing the adult only areas…… too bad if it upsets people….. if it says adults only, that’s what it means! Take your kids elsewhere! There are plenty of places for them to go!!!! There are only a FEW that are adult only…. Please let us enjoy these few areas!! Don’t have rules if you don’t enforce them!!!!
If these issues don't stop we will be vacationing at adult all inclusive resorts instead. I'm tired of children running wild and parents stuffing their kids in the hot tubs and pools and allowing them to stay there all day. This is rude and unacceptable that parents would allow this. The cruiseline should enforce rules and they don't.
If you bring your kid on a cruise, they are your responsibility 24/7. Do not let them cause a disturbance, leave them unattended at any time or location, or take them into an adult only area. Child abandonment should be a banning offense!
@Graygeezer Agreed; also thank you for not calling the kids brats (like some of the other commenters do) and instead placing the blame (and rightly so) on the adults where it belongs.
Or you can always just go a different cruise and stop complaining. Royal Caribbean is a family cruise line, get over it... The people who bring kids on the cruise actually spent more money than you did, so good luck getting the cruise-line to ban them just to make YOU happy. Your best bet is to just choose a different cruise line. I"ll be damned if I gotta sit with my kids the entire cruise, just cuz some grumpy single person doesn't wanna be around them. Especially when that grumpy single person only spent a 3rd of what I did
The underlying issues are parents allowing children to be disrespectful and the cruise lines not enforcing existing rules. With that being said, I don’t know why the mainstream cruise lines don’t offer some adult-only cruises. I think they would be surprised at the reception they would receive. I do understand the importance of family cruises and that is their target market, but if they have 25 or more cruise ships they could dedicate one ship or a few sailings each year to adult-only with little to no impact to their bottom line. They don’t have to re-vamp their entire brand.
If you cruise during the school year there are not as many. We waited until our kids were 9/10 to start cruising and they were not running around. They were with us the entire time.
@@Cenlalowell We just returned from a Princess cruise to the British Isles, and there were less than 200 kids on board, I would not have guess that many, but kids were very well behaved. If they still want a Royal Caribbean product, can move up to Celebrity, or higher yet to Silversea, there are many options.
If you put a curfew in, parents would complain "I didn't pay $X,000.00 to keep my kids in the cabin". I think the solution is that if there are adult only areas, they be policed and staff keeps anyone under the specific age (16, 18, 21 whatever) out of that area. And yes, that includes breastfeeding a baby. A baby is not an adult and you have the entire rest of the ship you can do it. They can have staff at the buffet singing washy washy, they can have staff at the adult areas to keep out little ones.
Loved to cruise on Royal Caribbean but the growing number of uncontrolled kids is the reason that my wife and I have switched to Princess. We love kids and our children used to cruise with us when they were under 18 but they had limits and a curfew. As you state RC needs to review their policies on children or face losing more adult passengers like us. Great topic, thanks Don!
Agreed. The number of cruise lines and options is increasing every year. Might have to select a cruise line that monitors children more closely and expects parents to be more responsible.
They should make a couple of ships adults only or at least a couple of sailings. Kids running around would annoy me to no end. That’s why we are looking at virgin no kids.
Virgin was our very first cruise! We were in awe & it was weird not seeing kids...lol. We enjoyed it!!! Our next cruise was on Independence& we brought our kids. They were well behaved and stuck to curfew. We saw kids WITH NO ADULTS with them in the adult areas & I was annoyed! Our next cruise is on Grandeur & I hope we do not witness this. I really struggled more with rude adults than kids, to be honest...Smoking, vaping, pushing, cutting in line, dressed like street walkers...
Any of the upscale cruise lines have virtually no children because parents to not want to pay premium prices for their children. Now, it means deliberately selecting a cruise that is out of the price range of most families. Honestly, the larger/newer RCI ships are getting so expensive, a luxury cruise line is almost the same amount of money! 🤣
@@Allthathingss I like the ide of an adults on cruise like Virgin has but I don't think I would like Virgin as product. I think doing an adults only cruise spin off with Royal Caribbean would be perfect. Do what the are doing now but take the kids out of it. Hell, even leave the water slides on the Voyager class ships. Adults like those too.
We’ve been on many cruises with our children. There is a reason why there is a kids club onboard. My children attend those kids clubs until 10ish pm and then off to bed. Even if they claim to be bored in the kids club, we’ve always told them that after dinner each night, mom and dad get to have a vacation too and part of that is them spending time in the kids club so we can have some adult time. We spend most of each day on a cruise ship with our children in pool area or excursions so we don’t think it’s too much to ask of them to attend kids club in the evening. I wish parents would be more mindful and realize that the kids clubs are there specifically to serve the function of keeping children occupied with children’s activities and not in adult areas of the ship. Teenaged children are a whole other issue. Just be realistic about where children should be present and when they should maybe be headed to bed.
Supervision is missing for quite a while on Royal- less ship guards and they are not doing anything about the situation! Curfew is too late and the kids are running down halls @1am ~ stealing breakfast door hangers or changing them! Parents need to be proactive!!!
This is why we stopped going on Royal Caribbean after a week aboard the Allure, it was too big, too crowded and just a zoo all the time. We did our first Princess cruise last December, and we're hooked. Practically zero children, chill vibe, decent entertainment, great food and service. No fighting for a table in the buffet, or waiting 30 minutes to use an elevator.
You’re not wrong. When I think of Royal Caribbean these days I think “floating daycare” and no thank you. If you tell me you’re catering to families that’s great, I know to not book with you because I’m not looking for that on a cruise. More and more I feel myself being pushed to adult only cruises.
It’s crazy the way people let their kids run around until the wee hours of the morning. We have been woken up at 1 and 2 in the am by teens yelling, running in the halls and knocking on doors.
Exactly, a lot of us are of the getting older generation and do not want to deal with the B.S. of a mega ship with all the toys, noise, and screaming kids. We raised our children, completed our working careers, and want a nice quiet cruise with dining and entertainment options, not Disneyland on water. No thank you.......
@Cenlalowell very rarely see children on Princess. For some reason, when I do, they are with their parents or very well behaved. Have no desire to do Virgin.
I couldn't have said it better. I'll go one further and say I'm not even sure a cruise is a good vacation idea for kids anyway. Among all the other great, relaxing adult activities aboard a ship, sometimes I just enjoy the immensity of nature out there - the wind, the endless stretch of sky and water, the waves slapping against the hull, occasionally seeing wildlife, and on Transatlantics, sometimes going days without seeing ANYTHING man made out there. Don't get me wrong, I love kids (raised three of my own), but I am certain that kids don't truly appreciate how cool all those adult things I mentioned are! Nothing pours cold water on an otherwise unforgettable experience than whiny, bawling, unruly kids. Take them to Disneyland! I've always felt that cruising was an adult vacation. There. I said it. I'm an old grouch, I guess....
@@biknjakobviously there’s no place for unruly kids but I don’t understand complaining about a family cruise. I take my family on a cruise because there are different ports we can travel to and don’t have to worry about food and lodging costs in different countries. I was on the allure and someone was there carding the sea pass cards to make sure you were over 18 and I did not see one kid at a nightclub. I saw older teenagers roaming the ship but they were not bothering anyone and the smaller kids were with their parents. If you old people want peace and quiet then go to an adults only resort or an adults only cruise. The rest of us aren’t dead yet and we do not want to be on an old folks cruise. When you people die off who will be the future cruisers if you run all the families away. Some of you make no sense.
It's all up to the parents being responsible. If they can't be, the cruise line should step in so other people's vacations are not made unpleasant due to irresponsible parents.
Make the bars like The USA in Canada 18 or 21 This is not a problem that can be fixed Too many parents don’t care they want everything they don’t want to look after their children I will be going on adults only cruises
It's worse than that Don. They get 2 cabins and stick the kids in one. This woman comes up kicking on the door to get in with wine glasses in both hands says I haven't seen my kids for 2 days
As a parent of 2 kids who love cruising, I think this is more of a sign of a sad cultural shift. From the moment they are born they are our children and while we are on vacation, there is no vacation from parenting. On our last cruise my two kids felt they outgrew kids club and we compromised as a family with activities. Everyone was in bed by 10:30-11:00 pm, everyone did something they loved and we were together as a family. Stability at bed makes for less moody and more enjoyable kids that you want to be with! My kids would go to certain activities together, leaving us adult time, but we knew where they were and they knew we were. People should really think about what a “family” vacation is about when they choose to bring their kids, and parents should think about what a “family” is when they create it…as much as you might want to check out, you really can’t.
Thanks for being good parents. We are great grandparents and love going on any vacations with ours. That includes cruises, camping, renting condos at the seashore, going to Disney. Kids keep us feeling young. All kids will have their good days and bad like everyone does. I think allot of people forget that they were kids once. Running up and down the halls, knocking on doors, being disrespectful and being in adult only areas should not be allowed. Who do you think is to blame for all this happening? That’s an easy answer!
This is why I choose HAL & Princess, I'm a senior who loves kids but prefer smaller more traditional cruising. So Royal is not for me, cruisers need to choose the cruise line that fits them and not expect the cruise line to change for a few individuals.
True…I cruise solo and don’t want to deal with kids period. This means I gravitate to cruise lines that aren’t focused on the family market. This is an issue of taking responsibility…I’m responsible for seeking out a good fit for me and parents are responsible for managing their kids. Taking your kid to the bar with you speaks to a problem much bigger than picking the right cruise line. Funny how cruise ships are a snap shot of the larger society.
That is why RCCL has Celebrity if you are loyal to Royal. Being on a Celebrity ship does not totally exclude kids. But the likelihood you see many of them out and about is slim. People are on vacation and pay handsomely to be on those ships and feel like the rules mean nothing to them. The rules should apply to all, regardless. Cruise lines that allow kids have a hard time enforcing the rules. Hands are tied. Regardless of the brand.
We have been cruising for a long time! We are old(er) cruisers. These days we rarely book cruises shorter than 3-weeks. Booking longer cruises or booking with more upscale cruise lines usually solves the “kids being kids” problem due to the time/cost on the cruise. After 25-years of cruising the Caribbean, we rarely book a cruise there (although we took a free Caribbean cruise with Celebrity there earlier this year) - that’s where the majority of the MEGA size ships live. We have cruised on RCCL’s Oasis Class ships several times in the past. While there are lots of activities on board, we found the ships to be too crowded/loud for our liking. So now we are back focusing on ships like the Celebrity Solstice Class and other cruise line ships around the same size. Except for Carnival - we don’t cruise with Carnival.
Carnival is the worst for overcrowding. Cruised with them once last year, I will never return to them. Also the ship was poorly designed, the Mardi Gras
@@notinterested6343 We enjoy a more traditional cruise experiences. Carnival hasn't provided that for many years. They do fit a niche that is obviously needed/wanted but we were never the new Carnival's type of cruiser. We have cruised 103 days with Carnival but our last cruise with them was 2018.
Thank you for this video There need to be areas without kids on Royal Caribbean . They say the solarium is 18 and over but yet there’s always little kids in there taking up chairs or seats or whatever. Thank you
we ended up on a cruise to Mexico on Royal during spring break. There were like 1200 kids on it. Pools were crazy busy and there was a huge line for ice-cream all the time. My wife and I vowed to never go during a spring break again. We love kids but not that many.
This is why me and my wife cruise on Virgin Voyages…no kids…we would like to cruise on other lines but vacationing with a bunch of kids does not seem like a vacation to me or her. Our kids are grown. Youngest is in college. We would have never have cruised with our kids when they were growing up nor did we ever consider it a family vacation to be trapped in a boat with chaos. I can’t believe more cruise lines aren’t adults only. What’s worse is MSC allowing kids in the MSC Yacht Club section. Had they made that entire section adults only I would use them instead of Virgin Voyages since I live in ST Augustine and don’t want to drive down to Miami all the time for a short cruise. Hoping Virgin puts a ship closer to me
I've never taken a cruise but really like Don's videos. But based on the regular content about problems with cruising, I'm probably not ever going on a cruise.
Aside from the obvious complaints, one thing I've never understood is why, as a member of the classic cruise demographic (55 & up) I'm subject to obnoxiously loud hip hop/Top 40/ dance BS in public areas, especially the pool. No, I don't appreciate Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Rihanna, Dua Lipa, etc. Why can't they offer classic rock, 60's pop, Motown classics, or mainstream reggae ?? Play that other stuff in the club !!!!!!
We took our 9 & 13 year old grandchildren on Anthem back in April. We gave them the refreshment package for Christmas. They really liked getting the frozen mocktails and Shirley Temple drinks. Where else can you get those drinks except for a bar?? They were supervised from a far and left the bar as soon as they got their drinks. The other thing is to get to the bridge wings you had to go through the Solarium. I did walk with my 9 year old grandson through the Solarium to the bridge wing so we could watch the approach to Nassau. He enjoyed and took in every sight I pointed out to him especially how close we got to the rocks where the light house is. I will say he was very paranoid walking through the Solarium!! Royal eliminated that problem on Utopia by installing suites on the bridge wings. I do agree the curfew should be 11 pm for guests 17 and under. Our grandchildren were in the cabin and in bed by 10 pm and were well supervised by the adults traveling with us.
Separate the cruises, make the cruises on some ships adult only during school time and open them up to families for short weekend cruises and school holidays. Give the customer a chance to enjoy a newer ship without the kids on select cruises
We just disembarked the Utopia after b2b 7/19 & 7/22 and I 100% agree with you about the problem. You stated it very well. I hope RC listens and comes up w/a solution because we live local to Port Canaveral and have many cruise lines to choose from. We do have the bulk of our cruise points w/RC but are looking to switch. (I actually put that in my cruise survey for the two cruises today before even watching this video.)
We normally avoid summer months unless we have our grandchildren with us. RCL puts in their Compass to not have any children in the dance floor without an adult with them so the dances can see them and not hurt the kids nor fall because of tripping over the kids. It is very dangerous to do a cha chavot even a waltz with an unaccompanied three year old on the floor. But I agree, it is very different having kids with adults on the floor at 7 PM verses 10 PM. Once we had a parent of a four year old at 11 PM tell dancers that sorry, we ask our 4-year old son to stay off the dance floor but he won't. A fight almost broke out. Security had to be called.
I thought this new ship had a neighborhood for whole families? Let that neighborhood be the bar/dance for parents who want to take their kids out late.
I agree with everyone! We have experienced this on Royal and the kids running around unsupervised everywhere is out of control. We have complained. There is no parenting and Royal doesn’t do much about it. Disappointing. We are Diamond but have been trying out other cruise lines. Thanks Don!! Great reporting as always!!
My husband and I are Emerald Status, we love Royal Caribbean, now all we use are the older Voyager/Radiance Class. We are too old for a playground, however these class of ships are getting way to old, would be nice if they did a couple of overhauls on them.
I just think they need to make bars adult only and enforce it. The same with other areas that are supposed to be adult only. Kids running around in those areas is unacceptable. I'd be peeved!
We had that issue in March on Anthem of the Seas. The silent disco party ran out of headsets because all the kids took them....even though they had silent disco partys just for kids... guess they need to have silent disco partys for us adults too!
It’s going to continue to be a problem for all cruise lines. I know people who cruise exclusively because they don’t have to be bothered with their kids the whole time. They get on the ship and their kids do their own thing. This unfortunately means cruise companies will have to setup rules. Curfews and no kids under 16 at bars and in clubs. Adult areas need to be section off and you need your room pass to enter.
I have been on 8 Disney cruises and one RC (Symphony of the Seas). People always question me about kids on the Disney cruises. I have never had an issue on a Disney ship, but the RC? Nope! Parents with the drink package enjoying themselves with the adolescent kids running all over and being rude and unsupervised.
Hi Don, we have recently been on Symphony from NYC. We are from the UK. We have grown up kids but still come on our holliday. Royal does have the most things to do out of all the cruise companies. 1 bad point on this crusie is the ship arrives late at each port. Like around 2pm before we get off at Port Canaveral and Nassau. Why is this. Premium ports with little time. Also the important customer feedback on the return home does not work. Maybe because of my answers. It say, any problems contact the company who provides this feedback web site. I did and nothing happened. The the good crew that i remembered there name to leave them the deserved good feedback and reconition i cannot do. How rubbish. Now it says my chance to leave our feedback has been lost because of time has passed. It seems hard work to contact them now unless i am making a booking !
It's a "Self-Inflicted" wound by Royal Caribbean! We have ZERO intentions of patronizing an ICON class ship... Oasis was interesting but we refuse to pay BIG BUCKS to sail on an amusement park
1am curfew is ridiculous for kids!! 😮. For teens I could see a 1am curfew because they want to hang out together but they need to have a teen club for dancing and sodas. How can the adults go hang out though if they need to leave the kids in the room by 10pm? Does the ship offer babysitting services for a few hours? Some hotels do
We went on the Ascent in June because of no slides and kid entertainment. The smaller ships are looking very interesting to us and our group-we are early 70s
We have only been on charter cruises (on RCL), so no young kids. As much as I would like to try a regular cruise, having to deal with bratty kids and their entitled parents has stopped me.
I have been on 7 Royal Caribbean ships. The last one was Symphony of the seas back in May of 2022. Having kids on board never seemed to faze me . yes, I do realize they have a lot of amenities and things for kids to do, but I hardly even notice them. If this is a problem, Royal needs to make sure they have security at the adult venues to make sure Kids under 18 don't have access to that area. But maybe the real problem is the parents who think it's OK to take their kids into baleros, or one of the other lounges. I completely understand mom and dad needs some adult time. But those parents need to keep in mind they brought their kids on vacation. If you wanted adult time, maybe you should left your kids at home with their aunts ,uncles and grandparents. I don't have a solution for the problem, but I do think that's security needs to do a better job of enforcing the curfew. And maybe the curfew needs to be lowered to midnight or 11pm, i don't understand how kids can stay out that late. Anyway, I'm 55 years old and normally by midnight I'm exhausted Lol
Parents should hire the sitters to watch their kids in their room or at an activity if they need to go out at midnight and party. RCCL does have a good kids program, but after hours, hire a sitter!
On our Icon of the seas cruise the kids were out of control. They were thrashing about in the Swim and Tonic bar which should not allow kids in the pool.
Went on Holland America last year...we did back to back cruises like we always do.52 days.... Holland America has kids free with adult booking..In 52 days we only got a lounge chair twice..the family of four took 5 to 6 chairs for people and toys..I filed a complaint.constsntly..the workers said the dont let that. Happen.lie lies...we may not cruise this year because of this issues 🤔🤔🤔🤔
We ALWAYS sail RC smaller older ships. They are in good condition, but not all the bells and whistles that the big ships have to cater to kids. I taught for 30 years and love kids, but...
My kids were always with us and we went to our rooms at very reasonable time. Made sure they were not causing trouble or tormenting follow cruisers. But, people need to do their homework on the ships before booking to analyze what potential crowd will be on that ship. Save yourself alot of headaches.
I think aside from the bar topic - there are many couples these days that DON'T have kids, for whatever reason - that are still young and want to do fun things during the day like on Royal but don't want to deal all day with kids especially the way some have been behaving more recently (not going to get into the reasons why it may be happening). I do think there could be a market for adults only ships like Virgin has proven with some of the fun features of Royal still included. To just say to switch to a line like Princess, HAL or Viking that caters more to retirees or older audiences may be missing the point.
How about RC have some adult only cruises? It is very frustrating when kids are running around, using the adult area, up all night long, and good luck trying to get ice cream when there's kids everywhere. We've been on one cruise where we were next door to four boys, and their parents were on the other side of them, those boys liked to stay up all night long, and they were very loud; You can hear them jumping on the beds and hitting the walls and roof, that's some sort of a ball they were playing with and banging it on the walls. We complained to our room steward, to their parents, guest services and even to the boys to no avail. So we would get up early and we decided to call their room to wake him up very early, since they were up all night long, just to say time to get up! After a few days of doing this, they got the hint and settled down at night, Plus we had one more very stern talk with their parents! We haven't cruised since the pLandemic ended, but I don't think we're going to go on these very big ships, with all the kids running around, we prefer adult only.
Excellent video, Don. I gave up cruising years ago because of all the kids. Thought I was the only one. If the cruise lines market as "family oriented" and kids sail "FREE", yes the ship will be filled with kids. Hey, KIDS SAIL FREE. Cruise lines want kids on the ships, because they are the "future cruisers". ~~ And being single, my double fare, or 1.5 fare subsidizes the families. And the Dr. Spock generation of "let the kids do whatever they want, don't discipline them" is the norm in society. If enough single adult cruisers would just STOP CRUISING, cruise lines would take note.
I've been feeling exactly that for a few years now. Very interesting to see and experience the technological advances in ship building BUT the enjoyment for my age group (65-75) has gone down hill. Too crowded. Too many lines. Too noisy. Too too.................. Looking to enjoy cruising again.
The bars on ships are more like venues rather than traditional bars on land. Those bars host trivia and other activities and have music and dancing. I don't mind kids in the venues as long as they behave, and they usually act fine in venues. Kids in bars aren't the problem. It's those unsupervised groups of tweens and teens roaming the ship. They don't hang out in the bars. They sit in the stairwell. They ride the elevators for hours. They run the hallways. They walk up and down the promenade like they own the place.
RC offers sitters doesn’t it? I recall there’s a daycare time setup for little ones. Kids should not be allowed where alcohol is served - which is a lot of spaces on the ship (yay!) and a ship wide kid curfew should be enforced.
We were on Royal Caribbean and went to the Solarium once. It was loaded with kids. We didn't go back. We usually cruise with HA or Viking. They cater to seniors. Of course, there are some people in wheelchairs or walkers.
Yeah, on a recent RCI cruise, the social host was attempting to run an adults-only majority rules game show. Some people there had no interest in the game or their kids, just their drinking. The kids were running around the host and getting underfoot when people were trying to bring up their answers. I swear, if the last question (instead of the first) had been "What is the most annoying thing fellow cruisers do?" the last question instead of the first, I'd have written "Bring their kids to adults-only activities and let them run around like heathens while they get loaded on alcohol." Oh, on that same cruise, somebody reported a kid riding a bicycle in the buffet. Then the next day I saw it for myself (though it was a push / balance bike, not a full fledged bicycle). Zipping through the buffet on this thing. It vanished after that. I hope security confiscated that ahead of the kid crashing into a old lady, breaking her hip and sending food flying.
Some hotels abroad strictly ban all children under a certain age from entertainment areas after a certain time, often 20.30. They have no problem with it so why do ships. You can't expect ships to act like nannies so look after your own kids.
On August 4, I will be embarking on cruise #100 with Carnival. ((Actually, I am doing a back2back2back). The above is my long winded way of saying I have frequently shared ships with children and have learned much . I can definitely say that lots of kids on a particular cruise doesn’t necessarily mean noise, inconvenience, running down hallways, elevators that stop at every floor, etc. That kind of chaos often takes place with fewer kids, but those with irresponsible parents. Good kids on my cruises last month included several who called me “ma’am” and (under the watchful eyes of their parents) stepped aside to allow me to exit the elevator easily; a shy young boy who handed me a duck and beamed when I thanked him profusely.
just got off utopia with a 15 year old. They need more family friendly nightly activities. There was 1 mystery family comedy show that you only knew about it if you went to the box office. Bars like karaoke spotlight house 90% of the shows. I literally saw them let a 18 year old into the attic night club. here is a solution, don't shut down your pool deck at 8pm. Give teens an area they can chill while parents are in the bars. have the curfew set at 11pm unless you are with an adult. Another option is too have a nightclub for the 15 to 17 crowd. if you can cater to frat parties, you can do this.
Im diamond plus and considering leaving RCL to princes for that reason. Just came back from 12 night cruise in the canaries and as u say kids at midnight in the bolero dancing on the floor as well parents letting their kids splash in the pool without consideration of other passengers. And when u tell them the answer is they are kids they need to play. Parents sometimes are worth than kids with such an attitude
The answer is simple we have too many parents today who are under the delusional attitude that "My Kids Are Special " and that rules apply only to everyone else but not to them. I am not by any means anti children or anti family vacationing. We love and cherish our family vacations and the time we get to spend with the children in our family. But kids need direction and guidance and should not be able to just run wild.
I NEVER WOULD CRUISE WITH KIDS EVER!! Two pools never work, in condos or cruise ships!! In my everyday life, I have way too much to do! I don’t want LOTS TO DO on a cruise ship!
