I accidentally stumbled on this some years back, when I was about to shorten a British made Bullet cylinder barrel, but found out I didn't have to, for reasons seen and explained here!

Interesting Paul. Maybe the fuel quality (in terms of octane rating) was lower in India so they dropped the compression accordingly?

I made a mandrel and shortened my Indian Bullet 500 barrel yesterday but stopped at 1mm removed as the landing around where the pushrods pass through looked to be getting a bit thin ?....Weird coincidence that this video is posted literally as I was doing the work...Best regards Stuart

G'day from Australia, Paul, thanks for the update on the different types of 500cc / 350cc English/ Indian heads, if you had to do a rebuild it wouldn't hurt to use either at a push, cheers mate Neil 🤠.

Interesting, the fatter edge fins may have a small effect on cooling too.

Yep. Likely to store more heat

Paul I’m looking to rebuild my 61 trials Royal Enfield with British 350 Bullet engine with aluminium head and and low compression piston from Hitchcocks do you have any advise on best way to build this up.

The amount of fins is higher in the British ones aren't they?

How easy is it to change a 350 to 500? Is it possible? I know you would need a bigger carb

It can be done, but the crankcase mouth needs opening out, the barrel studs need moving outwards, it is not just a spanner job!

Thank you Paul. I am wondering what would be the resulting compression ratio on 500 Indian Bullet with standard piston if the barrel height were reduced from its original 77 mm to 76 mm? Any idea?
@paulhenshaw4514

Probably around 7:1, or thereabouts.

I am assuming that you remove the 1mm from the bottom gasket face?
@paulhenshaw4514
@paulhenshaw4514 4 месяца назад
Yes, that is the easiest place to do it. sometimes 2 mm is removed.

@@paulhenshaw4514 Thank you Paul. My barrel is 77.1 How do I know how much to take off, do you have a method to figure it out?

Make it so the edge of the piston crown is level with the top of the liner spigot - that is all I do.

What are the quoted sizes?
@paulhenshaw4514
@paulhenshaw4514 Год назад
Hi Neil. Not sure there are any as such, but many Indian barrels seem to be slightly taller between their gasket faces than their British counterparts, going by my experiences, at any rate.

Typical when you let the colonials out from under your gaze!

Probably because they have low octane fuel, as the faces are square it’s not a mistake, it’s deliberate.
