this is a detailed video on how to fix the hard gear shifts and poor clutch feel on the Royal Enfield Himalayan . in this video I describe the cause and the solution in great detail so that one can learn how to make finer adjustments to their machine later on. I very strongly believe that every single thing in nature has room for corrections and improvements and that no DESIGN is absolute. Hope this video saves all of you some headache and wish for many more happy riding experiences.

Same issues for me too. Sometimes my gear is stuck on first gear when I start it in signals and a lot force is required to put it to second. Other gears are all fine. Also the sound during the shift 😓,... Reported this for 3 services but royal enfield service engineers told me it's normal 😂. But before watching this video itself I figured out and adjusted the clutch ply and it kind of fixed the issue but the sad part is I have to repeat this almost every 1000km 😶. I will also try the other tips you recommend next time. Thank you so much ✌️❤️

I have tried this method of rerouting the clutch cable when you use handlebar riser to eliminate the clunky noise while shifting the gear and it works. However There is another alternative to this method. Why don't you replace with classic 350 cc's clutch cable which is compatible and longer? You will feel the clutch action will be much softer & smoother. Stay safe and enjoy the ride.

All good point but I'll have to respectfully disagree on the first solution. The position of the lever can be changed by rotating the barrel of the linkage and that should be tried first. If you put the linkage back together at anything less than 90 degrees from where it connects to the transmission you'll be effectively lowering the pressure or torque used to change gears with each shift, no matter what boots you use. :-) I know this because mine has to be at the highest setting to accept size 47 motocross boots in order to upshift at all. Great video!

Hi Guy, will make a dedicated video on off road tweaking that needs to be done on the motorcycle . And yes you HAVE to raise the lever position by about 5 mm (subjective matter) if you plan to do high speed trail riding . slow speed technical stuff , i would have it adjusted to factory position.

I used to have a honda cbf250 which had a gammy clutch. It would bind and not fully disengage but only sometimes. The problem was the bike was speced for 20w50 oil and i used 10w40. Everyone said it would be fine etc but the thicker oil was needed or the plates warped due to un-even swelling (i think the oil was "squeezed" out overnight but the lower half of the plate is submerged. If i tied the clutch lever it was way better in the morning. It might need to be thicker to cling to the plate???). Himalayans need 15w50 i believe so maybe a similar thing is happening? Clutches are mysterious... once it was warped it needed plates changed tho :/. Certainly the worst culprit was shell helix fully synthetic 10w40 which should have been slippery!
@IAM-zb3jy
@IAM-zb3jy 2 года назад
Would you say that these fixes will help with downshifting? Sometimes it's hard to downshift into second and then first. I will miss them or they will not engage at all, with normal downshifting.
@karandhingra7791

Hey Ben! Thanks for this very helpful and detailed guide. What is your opinion on not tying the clutch cable at all? After I installed handlebar risers my cable was too taut and the clutch and gearshifts became hard so to free the cable I cut the factory zipties. Now my clutch cable is not tied at all and the clutch feels much better. Is there risk of damage if the cable hangs free? If so I'll purchase some zipties and tie it loose as you've shown. The Himalayan is my first bike and I couldn't have asked for a better source of guidance on how to maintain and run the bike properly. I really appreciate your work!
@ONTWOWHEELSBEN
@ONTWOWHEELSBEN 3 года назад
Karan Dhingra if there is no pinching anywhere then you can let it hang . Move handlebar left to right quite aggressively and see if the cable gets stuck somewhere . If all is well leave it the way it is .

People who rides Pulsar 200 ns don't even bother about this. Bro it's a common issue, with each engine oil change the engine becomes smooth. Try changing oil once in every 2.5 k kms or go for a better grade oil, most service centre motos top-up oil and say they changed oil. Better get oil changed by yourself.

One thing i noticed with the clutch cable is the route it takes. If its installed in the wrong wrong route, gets jammed between the steering limiting snub, damaging it leading to fast failure.

Chandramohan A hi friend . That’s a conditioning problem . More in the head than in reality . You are so used to symmetry that you become very irritated the moment you are to work with asymmetry . Think of this while your left hands job is to press and release a lever only hour right hand is continuously twisting and turning something at a different angle than your left. Also it does the job of pulling in the brakes at times . But you have conditioned your brain to accept it as normal . Like wise if you train yourself to accept it it will work for you .

Having watched this i just have to comment. i know you aren't featuring chain adjustment but, i can't help but notice that the chain, considering the bike is on the centre stand, is far too tight, it should have sag in it so that when the bike is on it's wheels and therefore the chain tension changes it isn't over tight. The chain is best adjusted while the bike is on it's wheels and preferably with some weight on it. The other thing is, doing that tying back thing with the clutch lever will achieve nothing whatsoever other that stress the clutch cable for a very long period, something it was not designed to do. Please, if you are going to do an informational video, please make sure what you are advising has some merit and is correct.

yes correct, i am not featuring a chain adjustment here . Also if you do not know what tying the lever to the bar does to a sticky clutch then you should def TRY THIS out on a bike that has been sitting too long without being ridden and its clutch wont come loose.
@tonywalker2372
@tonywalker2372 3 года назад
First off, i haven't got a sticky clutch and if i did have i would investigate why that is and rectify it. Secondly, as i said doing as you suggest will have no other effect on the clutch other than possibly causing the clutch cable to stretch.

Tying the cable, even loosely, can direct force that was being used to move the cable when the lever is pulled into increasing tension on the cable. Yes, cables will wear more but, it will perform the task required in a more consistent manner. The formulation of the plates is the most likely root cause of this issue. So, yes, moving to a different composition may correct it. Also, moving to a beefier cable could improve clutch actuation without resorting to tying the cable. That being said, both of those solutions require expenditure of cash. Ben's solution is quick, cheap, and appears to be effective. Yes, probably at the cost of reduced life of the cable but, it's very practical and immediate. Two important considerations when out and about on a bike. Just found your channel, Ben. I like your pragmatic and diligent approach as well as your honorable humility. I'm looking forward to more of your wonderful sharing. VT, USA edit: grammar

After further contemplation on this, the comments about oils and stickiness increasing with older oils are correct. I still like this economical and quick fix but, it is a good idea to change your oil if things are getting sticky. In fact if my oil has gotten to this point, i usually through some Motor Flush through it as well to make sure everything is cleaned out. Have any of you gone this route as well?

RONY SARKAR totally depends on your use / terrain . Ceat is by far the best for an all round option . The next is an MRF ( again all round tyre ) . Tim sun 822 TS if you do a lot of dry off road terrain as well with road . Timsun ts820 true dual purpose knobby tyre ( if you do a lot of dirt / mud / slush )

Why would anyone want to lower the shift lever on adventure bike? Adventure bike means big adventure boots and they need extra room so you can gey underneeth the shiftet.

Manoj Reddy yes you can . I have seen guys in the west and in the east ( bangkok, Singapore ) do it . But no personal experience with the same . If you get the right kit then it’s not a difficult job .

Himalayan Bs6 facing same problem .. hard gear shifts

Hi Ben! Nice video as always.. I have a question, actually didn't understand the increase in the leverage by just changing the angular position of the gear lever... As torque is F*R and you didn't change either of the quantity. Plz correct me if I am missing any point...
@ONTWOWHEELSBEN
@ONTWOWHEELSBEN 3 года назад
yes you are right about the exact torque being generated at the shifter . But what i was talking about was the the ease with with the Ankle can generate the same torque in this position . its like a better angle when we use wrenches to generate the same torque.

Yes , new engine oil helps with increased lubrication and better running of engine . But the clutch plates sticking will come back in another 500 kms or more . Change to a motul 5100 and you will see the difference

Gear shift hard issue can be solved without all this trouble just Shift to Motul or Liquimoly Oil as RE LiquidGun is the worst oil and that's the best option it smoothens the engine and u will feel the ride comfort
@ONTWOWHEELSBEN
@ONTWOWHEELSBEN 4 года назад
i have used motul on atleast 20 motorcyles of mine . ran a business of selling performance oils for over 3 years. i do know what difference it brings about in the transmission. but this video is about a lot more that you can do to fix the issue once and for all.
@shajik.damodaran8156

Dear friend, oils can influence gear shifting only if you don't change the oil for long time or using different spec oil. New fresh oil mineral /synthetic eases gear shift for sure.
@shajik.damodaran8156
@shajik.damodaran8156 4 года назад
GM Ben, we can simultaneously try by replacing existing gear shift with pulsar 180's shift lever which is slightly longer than REH's shift lever. This has been successfully done by monu sagar , a famous delhi based mechanic youtuber.
@ONTWOWHEELSBEN
@ONTWOWHEELSBEN 4 года назад
Shaji K.Damodaran yes uncle . I have tried the 180’s lever on mine after watching Monu’s video and it worked like a charm except for quick aggressive upshifts . I never could understand why . So I lowered the position just like I did in this video and found that i couldn’t do quick downshifts now my . Something about the length of the lever was just a little bit more for the Himalayan’s transmission I guess. The perfect length would be right in between the stock one’s and the pulsar’s.
@shajik.damodaran8156
@shajik.damodaran8156 4 года назад
Varying the length of shift lever definitely eases the shift process due to increased torque applied. Your observation appears right on the shifter.
