For the first time in almost a thousand years, a Royal Marine is picking up the Tower of London keys.
Sir Gordon Messenger was installed on Thursday as the 161st Constable of the Tower of London.
The role is one of the oldest in the country - since 1078, the Constable of the Tower has been the crown's chief agent in the capital, watching over prisoners and overseeing operations and security.

When I was in the US Army back in the 1980's I used to be part of the aggressor forces for the NATO LERP school at Weingarten, Germany. Aggressing against the Royal Marine commandos, British Paras and SAS was the highlight of my career. They were (are) damn good and glad they are on our side as I would not want to fight them for real!

@Stanly Stud yh but he's talking about his personal experiences. He obviously didn't experience the other combat infantry units. But tbh the two of them he mentioned are the gate way units to the special force's. Royal marines ( SBS) British paras ( SAS)

@Andy-ScotsIrish-TheGAEL. Год назад
@Stanly Stud yh but I was just stating that typically they would come from the regiments as I stated above, but anyone in the British military in any regiment who has served for I believe 2 years at the minimum can apply to join any of the special forces branches as mentioned. No need to get personal and try to belittle someone saying little kid and play the PlayStation? Why are you so butt hurt? Nothing I said in my comment would warrant the abuse.

One of my deployments I worked together with SAS in Helmund. It was one of the highlights of my career. I still talk to one of them. Unfortunately it was only for 1.5 months as we worked a network together, it’s also pretty rare. I have never had so much tea in my life.

The Crown has a prerogative over all unmarked swans in open water in England and Wales. Obviously this is largely ceremonial these days but there's still a Royal Keeper of the Swans, and swans are sometimes sent as gifts to other countries. The King shares the "ownership" of the swans on the Thames with the Vintners Company, and Dyers Company and in July each year they "divvy up" the swans - which these days means checking their health, and recording the birds details - in a ceremony termed "Swan Upping".

Something to do with being a "Sworn Force". Allegiance to the Monarch, the Commander-in-Chief. The Allegiance of the Royal Navy was accepted as "unquestionable", so Matelots & Boot-Necks were NOT "Sworn Men". This "rite" was Reserved for Pongos & Crab-Fat. It was a sad battle 1,000 years ago. 50 enemy were at the gate of a now gone fort. The 200 men in the fort went out to fight their enemy thinking it would be an easy fight. The enemy's reinforcement of 400 showed up. The men of the fort tried to get back in but somebody lost the key and they were locked out. Those men were wiped out. The story got out and quickly spread across the land. Now every fort, castle and military base has somebody in charge of the keys so such a fate doesn't repeat itself.
