@@danpsyker6122 lets be honest here, in a book thats supposed to tell the story of one marine we start the story from the perspective of a child and follow that child on his road to try and become an astartes while deliberately hiding his "angel name" from others and the reader. as if every reader ever didnt immediatly know that thats dante in his younger years. if you want to be overly technical then yes, its a spoiler but please. Remember how in the Space Marine game you entered the Imperial Guard bunker and the wounded Cadian Guardsmen there talked? @@Traqqer1 Yes, and Ultramarines are among the chapters that still understand that they are the protectors of humanity, but are not the rulers as such. The whole realm of Ultramar operates a bit differently from the rest of the Imperium. A little Imperium within the Imperium. The cultural shock is nicely depicted in the novel Crossfire by Matthew Farrer. The main character Arbitor Senioris called Shira Calpurnia, comes from Ultramar and is posted on a world that is radically different from what she is used to. The description of the different understanding of what it means to serve the Imperium or what the nobility/aristocracy is supposed to be are very interesting to read.

Space wolves are a regular Space marine chapter(as if there's anything regular about Astarties). The Grey Knights are space marines, that are part of the Inquisition. They are different and apart from being the brutal overpowered as space marines are, they are also psykers with immense power that are beyond match. I think the word is Grey Knights are to astarties as astarties are to imperial guardsmen. Lutein covers two very important lore segments that I haven't seen anyone else cover to the extent he does, that are incredibly significant- the STC history(important why humanity has outlawed A.I.) and the Titans, which I know you'll absolutely love how ridiculously overpowered they are.

I definitely recommend reading 'Space Wolf' as it covers the full process of recruitment of the Space Wolves chapter, as Wolf Priests (A mixture of Chaplains and Apothecaries) will continually monitor and watch over various tribes to look for specific individuals who are able to pull off great deeds, such as slaying a Fenrisian troll, being able to survive against a raid from a rival tribe in the case of Ragnar Blackmane, or showing a great cunning while on the hunt. As on Fenris (the world shown with the snow/ice, volcanoes, and the Kraken), nearly the entire planet is geologically unstable, and so tribes are constantly shifting and changing trying to survive against earthquakes, blizzards, hurricanes even if they are along a coast, or volcanic eruptions because the islands and continents shifting apart or into each other. The only stable island is that of Asaheim which is where the Space Wolves Fortress monastery known as the Aett, or the Fang is located upon, however the natives fight for survival includes a whole slew of predatory wildlife such as the Fenrisian troll, Fenrisian Wolf, or Fenrisian Kraken as well as conflict with other tribes.

To answer your question about who's '' the most elite'' or higher up the hierarchy: That would be the Adeptus Custodes AKA the Golden Banana Bois. They answer to the Emperor and to the Emperor alone, not even the Inquisition can order them around. The Space Marines though, well they fall under the jurisdiction of the Inquisition and there have been numerous instances where entire chapters have been declared ''heretics'' .

I read one 40k novel on the callousness of the Iron Hands recruitment called "Eye of Medusa" without going into it too much towards the end, when they were nearly done training they were given shotguns and autoguns and some basic armor and then split into teams and fought each other. Let's just say there were many injuries and several casualties. Also, once they were finally inducted... they get one of their hands cut off as initiation.

Thunder Warriors suffered of severe bodily deterioration - cancer cells and stuff like that. They were Emperor's early project of hand-made human, and as such came with flaws. Rather than to see them suffer a long painful death, Emperor opted for a mercikill instead.

The Night Lords omnibus has a Marine who met his mother. He... didn't recognize her. Sons Of Dorn is a book about a trio of Imperial Fists Scouts who have a hate-triangle (its like a love triangle, but the opposite) because they were recruited in the middle of a three way battle between Not-China, Not-France, and Not-Scotland. Each was a young soldier from each nation.

The ice world with volcanos near the end is Fenris, the home world of the Space Wolf chapter and one of the deadliest death worlds in the Imperium. Fun fact about the genetic differences between the chapters: each chapter is based on the genetic template of their Primarch. And when the Emperor created the Primarchs, he used some of his own DNA, but also spliced it with all kinds of weird shit (at least for some of the Primarchs). The space wolf Primarch, Leman Russ (an absolute badass with giant balls of purest adamantium) was created to be the Emperor's executioner - specifically, the executioner of other Primarchs, in case they got out of hand. As such, he needed to be loyal above all others, which may be why the Emperor used some canine DNA when creating Russ. So the Space Wolves literally have wolf DNA in them. I would also strongly recommend reading the Ragnar Blackman's novels - they are old, but it covers exactly the sort of origin story you are looking for.

I don't really remember much about Sigmar and the 40k Emperor as being the same entity but the running theory was that Warhammer Fantasy took place on a segregated world within 40K. Magic in the fantasy world was also borne of Chaos, the epicenter of which was at the polar north. IIRC, there was some kind of malfunctioning "gate" above the world, created by the Old Ones, which allowed the energies of the warp to leak onto the planet. Why the planet was separate from the rest of 40k is a mystery (as far as technology goes) but the shares aspects of chaos, including daemons, lent itself to the supposed link between the two games. Been quite a while since reading Age of Sigmar stuff, but I think the gist of it is that the warp finally waxed to a breaking point, granting the followers of Chaos the power to overrun and destroy the world. Sigmar used his power to whisk away certain peoples to safety, elevating some of them to be his elite Stormguard, but all the races ended up on various "elemental" planes. One could interpret this as being various locations within the Warp... If that is the case then time becomes irrelevant, anything goes, and the Emperor of Man may very well be Sigmar in another form.

I’m not sure if this was answered else where, but space wolves take their recruits, dump them out in the middle of nowhere and get them to return to fang (their fortress monastery) and the fun bit about fenris you’re not only challenged with the cold, like colder than winter Norway cold, but you’ll be hunted by the various, wolves, bears and trolls! So fun

1 Emporer 20 Primarchs (2 missing) to establish their own founding legions. Horus was the Emporers first Primarch of the Luna Wolves before his fall to Chaos. 9 legions (chapters) remained loyal to the Emporer while the other 9 become Chaos, thus began the Horus Heresy. Leman Russ, Primarch of the Space Wolves, was honoured by the Imperial Guard thus naming their main battle tank after him and supplied the Space Wolves with Leman Russ Exterminator tanks.

If you want a space marine origin story then look no further than the Space Wold Omnibus for Ragnar Blackmane not only does it cover his life before becoming a spacemarine, but it covers the process for a Space Wolf recruit from Fenris, a faction you've shown interest in. The book goes from his views as a teen in a tribe and how he views the marines etc.

Space Marine Chapters and the Inquisition has butted heads with each other multiple times. Space Marines are some of the few factions in the Empire that can do that without necessarily having to fear it. I think the Space Wolfs are some of the most famous ones to tell them to fuck off. Custodes sits above Space Marines but they have only been bodyguards until very recently in lore so right now I would say they are the most elit of them all.

If you're looking for a training style space marine book the first Ragnar novel "Space Wolf" does that. It starts when he was basically a Viking roaming Fenris and follows him through the training and augmenting up to becoming a full blooded marine. I'd recommend getting the "Space Wolf Omnibus". It's not that expensive and has the first 3 Ragnar books (Space Wolf, Ragnar's Claw, Grey Hunter) and will give you a decent look at the early years of a Space Marine and the inner working of the Space Wolves.

First off, let it be said that at this time, there are no actual canon depictions of the event at Mount Ararat, just eyewitness characters in the universe talking about the battle/massacre years or decades after the fact (and pretty much all those characters have some motive to bend the truth to make someone look better or worse). My personal understanding of that part of the lore is that the Thunder Warriors had to be killed because they were basically turning completely psychotic en-masse, started to murder allies and enemies alike around them during the actual Battle of Mount Ararat, and the Emperor had the rest of his forces put them down. More importantly, this wasn't simply a breakdown due to extreme stress from combat because their training or psychological conditioning was inadequate. It was an inevitable decline of their brain caused by the very implants that turned them into super soldiers. "Unstable" is a huge understatement for how the Thunder Warriors broke down at the end of the war to unify Terra under the Emperor's rule. A few Thunder Warriors did survive and didn't go completely insane for whatever reason, and some of those survivors actually think the Emperor did the right thing, killing their fellows at Mount Ararat.

The various chapters tends to have preferred worlds and types of recruits. The Space Wolfes takes their from their homeworld of Fenris and many other chapters does the same, mainly taking from their homeworld. Then you have the Black Templars that couldn't give a toss about the Codex and takes recruits from worlds they "conquer" or "cleanse". The Black Templars also care little for that 1000 man strong rule and is many thousands of men strong but no one dares to tell them they can't do that because they are that feared.
