"It's very Grim-dark." Warhammer 40K is literally the origin of the Grim-dark term. It comes from the phrase: "Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods." originally spoken by Vulkan one of the Primarchs. Edit: The term is actually attributed to the tagline of Warhammer 40K which Is "In the grim darkness of the far future there is only war." but the more complex version originates from Vulkan's speech, and to be perfectly honest I'm not sure which came first.

For a note, the massive ships of the imperium are build typically on forge worlds with shipyard rings that are floating in space around a planet. They don’t land or take off from planets, since some are bigger than a few moons.
@midgetydeath

In Rogue Trader they are given sizes such as the Lunar-class being 5.1 kilometers long. Everything is bigger in 40K post RT, though, but we weren't given direct sizes. Instead they say they have gun batteries the size of cities. So, by modern standards that means the Lunar-class would be either 51 kilometers long or 510 kilometers long. In the Great Crusade there were thousands of fleets of tens of thousands of ships each and that's just under one part of the Crusade. I think Battlefleet Gothic 2 got it best with the battle of Cadia. All those specks around the planet and environment you can see. Those are *SHIPS.*

18:44 - The red-haired aliens are members of the Eldar race (essentially space elves). They are one of the types of Aspect Warriors. In particular, they are called "Howling Banshees". The idea is that their masks release a scream that is capable of stunning an opponent (in the past this basically meant that in the first round of melee combat they were always going to strike first) and their swords are capable of cutting through armor like paper. Their heads aren't really that long, either. It's mostly helmet. 19:28 - Another Eldar. In this case either a ranger. They are snipers that rely heavily on cover in order to survive. Caught out in the open and, well, you see how well that worked out for him. 19:32 - Yet another Eldar. This aspect warrior is called a warp spider. Considering it has the blades it would be the Exarch, which is basically a squad leader. Eldar lead very structured lives since they feel emotions to a higher degree then humans and this can lead to ... err... problems if left unchecked (to put it bluntly, they became so debased at one point that they accidentally murder-fucked a Chaos God into existence and it is now devouring their souls). Most Eldar will dedicate themselves to an Aspect (think martial art) in order to find stability. These aspects each have a different style of combat and when used correctly can be absolutely devastating in play. For instance Howling Banshees are good at taking down armored targets like space marines, Fire Dragons are anti-tank infantry, Dark Reapers focus on long range combat with heavy weaponry, and Warp Spiders are fast "jump" infantry that generally work better on lightly armored targets (their weapons fire filaments that can cut flesh easily enough but can't penetrate armor). These are just a few of the types of aspect warriors, mind you. 21:04 - That is a Tyranid creature called a "Lictor". They are creatures that are sent ahead of a 'nid swarm to help find planets for them to devour. They are *very* good at getting around unseen.

The 'recce troops' you mentioned are Imperial Guard soldiers (normal non-augmented humans). In this case I think they're Kasrkins, which are basically special forces imperial guard with better armour and lasguns than you standard conscripted guardsmen. They're facing plague marines (traitor space marines corrupted by disease and pestilence by the Chaos God Nurgle) as well as plague daemons. Kasrkins are usually great but this time they were facing some huge thing that was way out of their league and probably needed actual space marines to deal with it. The trailer with the 'Cthulhu' monster involved space marines, the Eldar (space elves with hyper advanced tech that used to rule the galaxy before their hedonism and excesses destroyed their civilisation and birth the Chaos God Slaneesh) and the Tyranids (basically a hyper intelligent hive-mind of creatures that evolve insanely quickly and consume entire worlds of their biomass and minerals). The Tyranids are probably the primary threat to all life in the galaxy right now.

The enemies you saw in the 40k Inquisitor: Martyr trailers were Nurgle's daemons, Nurgle Cultists and Plague Marines. Nurgle is the Chaos god of Pestilence, Decay and Rot. The big one with the Rotary Cannon was a Hellbrute: "A twisted Mockery of a Space Marine", as he puts it in game. Just a Chaos Marine inside a Dreadnought who went completely bat shit insane from centuries of being stuck in the Dreadnought armor.

The recce guys you liked so much in the Inquisitor game are Tempestus Scions. They're basically orphans of officers and other important figures within the Imperium who are raised and trained by the Schola Progenium to be commandos for the Imperial Guard but they are also attached to Inquisitors when they need more firepower. They get more advanced armor/weapons and equipment for which regular Guardsmen generally dislike them

10:07 That is an Imperial Guardsman, they're the regular foot soldiers of the Imperium and are drafted from countless worlds. Their guns fire lasers that can decapitate someone, yet they are still considered to be flashlights compared to most weapons. Also, the ones in the Dawn of War 2 trailers were the Aeldar/Eldar/Space Elves, and the big Cthulu monster was a tyranid (I forgot what that specific type was called tho :/).

The redheads are Howling Banshees from the Eldar. And the thing in his head is a long service stud, probably denoting the rank of sergeant. Look up a guy called Baldemort on youtube, he does a really cool story based intro to each faction.

the zomby dude with the minigun is a dreadnaught when a space marine dies but is alive enough to recover he is put in a sarcophagus that keeps him alive that sarcophagus is put into a giant mech walker and when its a chaos marine it doesnt stop mutating and rotting its rare to find one with a rotary cannon as the rotary version is actually a pretty modern design, chaos tends to just prefer the twin linked bolter so they probably looted that one from a loyalist chapter

The "Reccy Troop" you are referring to are imperial stormtroopers. They are essentially a special forces branch of the Imperial guard. They are used mainly as the Inquisitions goons and sent of insane missions against stuff they really have no business fighting (as seen in the cinematic). Though they can kick some serious arse for regular squaddies in a world of demonic superhuman killing machines that don't die when they are killed.

A good recommendation I heard for getting into the 40K books is to start with the short stories so you don't get fatigued in the middle of a huge novel.

Those cannons are secondary/tertiary cannons meant for warding away fighters/bombers small small capital class ships (like frigates). The proper macro cannons stuffed into the lower decks are larger still.

That “round” in the man’s head is called a Service Stud. It means he’s been a Space Marine for a while, between ten and one hundred years if I’m not wrong.

The lasers you see in Inquisition: Martyr are Hellguns (or Hotshot lasguns), which are overcharged lasweapons. Also: those redheads are the Eldar, aka knife ears. According to imperial Guardsmen, they taste pretty good. :)

So, they guys you like with the laser rifles are Inquisitorial storm troopers. They're the closest thing the Inquisition has to a regular army, except they're all crack troops with top end gear. Your space elves are the Eldar, who live for thousands of years and are experienced psychers (space magic). The white troops with the sword and red manes are Howling Banshees, a type of Eldar infantry (most Eldar infantry units are highly specialized) that are used in close combat, with sonic amplifiers stunning their opponents.

I can wholeheartedly recommend the Eisenhorn books as well as Ravenor. Both are Inquisitors and the series are connected. Also "Gauns Ghosts" is an amazing series of novels featuring a Regiment of Astra Militarum from a dead world.

In that Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 2 trailer you saw the Blood Ravens Chapter with Assault Marines, jump packs and armed with bolt pistol and chainsword; Tactical Marines, your basic Space Marine; Devastator Marines, the ones with the big guns; and a Dreadnought, a mortally wounded Marine interned in an armored and heavily armed mech. The xenos, or aliens, you kept asking what they were are Eldar and you saw Howling Banshees, the red hair with swords; an Eldar Ranger, the sniper; a Warp Spider; the one that teleported, or warped, around; and I believe a Farseer, the Eldar "witch." The mass of cloudy tentacles in the sky are Tyranids, giant bugs that eat everything like the Zerg but grimdarker, and you saw a Lictor, one of many Tyranid forms.

Just so you know, space marines (those guys in big ol power armor) are superhumans basically. Those troops with seemingly lighter armor and rifles and are actually the normal grunts of the universe, they make up the bulk of the army in the 40k universe.

My start into the warhammer 40k universe began with Gaunt's Ghosts. It's about a Regiment of Soldiers from a dead planet and how they face there duty in the Imperial Army, their hate against Gaunt, who "let the planet die", the political intrigues of the Imperial Army and their dwindling numbers. I love the books about them. But from a lore perspective I think the Horus Heresy is a good start, because it explains a lot of stuff about the Chaos, the Dangers of it, the Fall of the Primarchs and creation of the Chaos Space Marines etc. And just because they are good books, i recommend: Eisenhorn Trilogy and Ravenor Trilogy!
