I was a Junior Marine at the R.M. Depot, Deal 1961-62. I learnt that the unofficial unit sign or emblem for 40 Cdo was the Saint matchstick figure, with the halo, from the TV series. There was a tattoo parlour a few minutes walk from the barracks main gate and I had a small tattoo of this Saint figure on one forearm. Unfortunately I never served with 40 Cdo - I had the tattoo just in case I got drafted to 40 Cdo though !!!

I suspect that the authorities knew of your Saint tattoo and thought it would be rather wazzer to detail you somewhere else !!!

My dad joined in 1946 and served until 1968. He served in both 40 and 42 as well as Brigade HQ. Palestine, Canal Zone, Aden, Malaya, Brunei (Limbang). I spent much of my early childhood in Singapore. In later life, he always looked forward to Signals and Commando reunions at Lympstone and Blackpool. Having said that, living in the Portsmouth area, he had plenty of old oppos as relatively close neighbours.

Great stuff lads. I recognized a few faces there, and Brum was the welfare Senior when I was in Ganners. I went all the way back to Middlesbrough after my tours of Iraq, Afghanistan, and Northern Ireland, and while it does indeed lack the comradeship of a military town, it has the advantage of being Middlesbrough. This means whenever I miss being in a war zone with the lads, I can just look out the back window and I feel like I'm back in the thick of the action! 😂

You go through life making good/bad choices that you have to live with later on in life. My bad choice was not joining the military. Thanks to all who joined up..... I won’t quote the normal saying cos that’s reserved for Americans
