Another excellent job, as always. I got to play it for the first time last night and it was extremely tense for a game with so few rules. 163-162 final score. Can't get much better than that. We enjoyed immensely.

I have the 1st edition of this game and have had a lot of success teaching this to casual guys, one of my preferred "gateway" games to choose. This new edition is really pretty. Great video as usual Rodney.

Have had this game for a while and once you have it down, it is easy to get to the table. While it is competitive the math in the game is easy to just let ride in the background and relax. I have played this with very competitive types and it is always more of just a casual and chill experience. To make the game just a little more elevated we choose historical figures as avatars for our moves(does not have to be from that same time period) as influencers over Europe. Like Sir Francis Walsingham, Machiavelli, Catherine the great etc. Good game and great video.

Thanks for the How To Play video! Royals reminded me of a game I played last summer in my gaming group. I looked it up on BGG and lo and behold, it's a reimplementation of the game I was thinking of: Heads of State. I remember in HoS that it requires collecting specific attributes in order to create the nobles i.e. having Title, Troops, Skills and Science cards to create the Marquis, and only Gold (without using the wild card Courtesans) to create the Baron. Royals' game pieces look more sharp and detailed than the multitude of kiddie-like blocks in HoS. To say which of Royals and HoS looks better, I'd give the edge to Royals. Will be keeping an eye out for it. :)

Great video. This game looks intriguing and really well produced. Obviously using your cubes wisely is the heart of the game. Though I am wondering if it is possible where a player might run out of cubes and if so what happens. Is there a way to get cubes back?

There's no real way to run short of cubes. You only ever need one of your cubes in the 'cemetery' so if you get bumped out of a location a second time you can reclaim your 2nd cube

This reminds me of Legacy: Testament of Duke de Cracy. This is "bigger," while Legacy is closer in to one of the noble's individual families, carrying over between ages.

I have a question about specter ops as I recently got it. are you allowed to use both of the charges of velocity blade to give the hunters -6 ?

I'm not completely sure on that one. I know you can typically only use 1 equipment card per turn, so I would think that would prevent you using both at once, if that's what you mean. That question might need to be taken directly to Plaid Hat Games. I tend to avoid trying to answer specific card interaction questions.

You mentioned the scenario where you are the starting player who has depleted the deck for the 3rd time. You say you wait until all other players have taken their turn. Does this imply you shuffle the deck again to allow for this?

Hi! I've played with my wife twice and twice she ran out of cubes BEFORE the end of the game. What happen then? Does she takes other color cubes instead? Thanks

I've heard that suggested, or you can just remove cubes from other locations (so long as you maintain who had majority, the number of cubes isn't as important).

Did some digging, and the general response was that this is not likely to ever happen. "I have played highly aggressive games of Royal with all player counts. As long you as reduce the deck as instructed for player counts under 5 you should never run out of cubes. If you played a 3 player game with a 5 player deck then you would likely run out (and be playing a game other than what the designer intended)." That said, in the rare case where it did happen, I'd say to use a suitable replacement.

No hassle. I haven't actually looked into the solo rules, as I don't find myself playing that way. However if you google the rule book pdf - you'll be able to read that section of the rules to see.

Those colored and numbered pieces and the board remind me of Heads of State. Don't tell me this is another reimplementation? We should call 2016 "The Year of Reimplementations", b/c it seems like every other game released is not a new game, but a "New & Improved!" version of an existing game. Odin's Raven's and Thru the Ages: A New Story of Civilization are just 2 examples.

Looks like a cool game. I do have a complaint though. It's fairly minor and has nothing to do with game play. In heraldry a crest is part of the full achievement and goes on top of the helmet. What is shown here is the coat of arms which is shown on the shield as well as potentially on a tabard or surcoat when a shield is unnecessary like a political function.
