Cubes? I thought little meeples were coming? Anyhow I have the European ed and I'm happy with cubes. Hopefully the game will see play on more tables with the DT putting their stamp on it.

Jim, you don't like the game. That's fine! But you can't deny that something you equate to "Ticket to Ride" is deserving a spot on the Dice Tower Essentials line, regardless of your own feelings of the game.
Ticket to Ride is the only entry game everyone in my family still plays today, years after getting in to the hobby. That means something! Also the game is a bit like the classic Acquire, or Airlines Europe.....where you need to attempt to own the most of something before the end of the period, or game. Instead of stocks in companies, it is cubes on people and their lands. This combo is pretty amazing and very accessible. You are a fool if you think it is junk.
Everything looks great and I would love to try this game out, but comparing with previous cover this one lacks historical accuracy: while nobles are dressed like people from 17 century the king himself looks like he is from some kind of medieval fantasy world. But of course it is just a minor quibble.
A very fun game, but I feel like they missed the boat with this one. It took way too long to come out, and I've since purchased and enjoyed the AS version. Highly recommended for those that haven't played it yet though.
There's an extra noble in England (5->6) where the required number of cards and the influence values have been changed also. I believe there's also a slight change in the distribution of cards.

I got to play while traveling outside the US and it is a very fun game, but I'm surprised there were no theme changes. The theme is completely irrelevant to the mechanics.
Surprisingly simple which in and of itself I don't mean as a criticism. Cubes are okay but they do NOTHING to help sell me on it so Tom's claim of "Great components" seems over blown to say the least! This seems ripe for an expansion to help mitigate luck. An expansion could also help make the two player game worthwhile, and yes to challenge Tom's claim that it's solid through all player counts, I can't imagine how a two player game of this would not be a weak link? As is, the replayability of this game seems limited. I could see it having SOME appeal as a gateway-ish game but the conflict in later rounds might hurt that appeal?
Honestly, no, although I've seen it played and I generally have a good internal barometer of what I will find fun in a game based on a run through or tutorial. I'm not saying Royals couldn't be an enjoyable experience, but I'm just not seeing the level fun corresponding to all the hype, and I think you (Tom) might be overselling this (hence the 'underwhelming' comment). I play a good amount of euro games so I don't think I'm uninformed in this regard. But then again, maybe that's the problem and I'm just becoming jaded and desensitized to all these point salad euro games that have flooded the market. I think this was a topic in one of your videos wherein the greatness of some games can be diminished by the very existence of similar games with better mechanisms.
It's more fun than it looks. It's the type of game where you just stare at the board thinking about what you're going to do next. Surprisingly good with 2-players too.
I've played it, it's fairly dry but what I liked about it is that it felt like a more interesting Ticket to Ride with area control. The complexity really wasn't much more, but it felt more dynamic and competitive. So It's kind of an entry-level Area Control game, good for that.
Yay, another recycled game from 2008. This is the year of recycled crap. The original was awful (heads of state), this isn't much better. Doesn't matter how pretty you make the game, it is still awful.
I asked that question on BGG (what's the difference between the 2 games?) There's a good explanation there by the designer on how they are substantially different. This game is MUCH better. I approve.
