In this tutorial, we go over how to make your first quest for your RPG Maker MZ game.
We discuss variables, self switches, and conditional branches, and how they all come together to create a quest that your players can complete.
I had to record this video twice because after recording it the first time I went to edit it and realize that NONE of my audio was recorded!

I know this is almost 2 years old now but this is still so helpful, just bought the game and have experimented for about 14 hours now having a great time. Your tutorials have made this infinitely easier for me. TY SO MUCH

to add a little flare to that, you could've had the fox become an NPC that randomly walked around inside the house after you returned it to the little girl

A great video. I did know how to do all of that with 'Switches' but very nice to see it done with a variable or two. It is interesting how many different ways there are to accomplish the same result, in-game.

Figured out about rpg quests. They have preety much 4 states and various different approaches are acceptable into tracking the right state. A variable may be useful, but so are with switches, self switches and if you are the one who likes to do it on a sophisticated yet complex way, working with labels is for sure an option. The quest states are (as I can call them) not started, ongoing, rewards, done At the *not started* section, the npc should bring a problem for the player to resolve, while ongoing, it's nice to put something to remind the player that the npc is waiting for the progress to complete. In the reward section you should apply the rewards (duh) then on the done part, you must figure out what would the npc say about the quest being done

New to RPGMaker and following along with your tutorials, most of which are really good. This one was the one I was most looking forward to learning and unfortunately was disappointed. It goes way, way too fast and the individual steps are not being explained well as you go, and it gets faster and faster as the video progresses. I understand the frustration of having to remake a video when the recording goes wrong, and I understand that to someone experienced with these things it would be repetitive and boring, but to a total novice the event pages are one of the more difficult aspects of game making and having to watch the video by repeating 5 second increments was difficult. It would have helped if you had started with a simple fetch quest rather than this two tiered quest with two separate questgivers.

This was a really helpful video! I spent quite a bt of time with this one, refining my version of the Fox Quest. I put it together with your battle tutorial and made another quest. Now all I need to do is add some complexity to the envrionment and I've got myself a working dungeon on my second day with RPG Maker. Thanks!

I'm really grateful for all your videos and I wondered if you could help me with a "gamble" event that scales with the players luck stat. e.g When your Luck Stat is below X, your chances of winning are 30%; But when your Luck stat is equal or above X It's 60%. Nonetheless, I really hope you continue with your videos!

That's a bit of a hard one. You'd have to find a plugin that allows you to call upon the stats in a conditional way. I'll have a look around to see if I can find something like that.

This is super helpful. Though an easier way to do it would be using the self-switch variable which wouldn't need the common events to be added. And that would make it a little easier too without having to add contants for the variables. Still, great video nonetheless.

Would love to see a remake of this video. All your videos are at a good pace and well informed but this one felt rushed and confuses me greatly. I seem to be having numerous issues making this quest and feels very complicated for someone new to making a game. Would love a slowed down version with more explanations/types of quest shown and then proceeding to a quest as complicated as this one. Too many moving parts without the basics being known.

I ran into an issue during testing where if you spoke to the man before picking up the coins, you could just hand him the coins as though you had them already, even though you shouldn't. The odds are very high that I overlooked something but I do have it that the dialogue should only trigger if you have the coins on you already.

When it comes to quests, is there a way to trigger a quest only when certain events have been met first?

Yeah. Have it on a Switch. If Switch (Talked to Mayor) is on. Then quest is available by setting it as a condition in the top left of the event manager.

I'm surprised that, in a engine which solely specializes in rpg games, the only way to make quests is by controlling the state of your own variables. I'm surprised there is no built in quest system.

I mean, suppose someone could make a plugin to make it easier, but the fact that there's so many ways to make quests work. tween variables, switches and self switches can do alot. even some with common events I have made self contained quests for example with self switches, including two ways with very different dialogue to complete the little quest, just a small fetch quest for shits n giggles, and a few if player has x item/gold ect. conditionals.

how do i make it so the fox is already in the town and you can talk to it like an npc, nothing happens, then go to the girl, accept quest, then go back to the fox and you return the fox to the girl?

These tutorials are really helpful. Thank you. Looking for a tip or advice. The problem is a quest giver with multiple options. I am able to complete the quests individually. however it gets stuck and I cant loop it back around to choose other options from original choice. Any idea? Thanks.

Interesting! What I would do in that case is have a switch for each quest. When you talk to the quest giver, have all of the switches in and have the quest giver run through all of the quests where the switches are on. When you complete a quest, turn the switch for that quest off so that when you talk to the quest giver, they don't ask you to do that quest but they still ask you about the other quests. Does that make sense?

The voices are painful on the 2nd and 3rd watch. Trying to figure out how to do this for an innkeeper and get them to switch back to inn option after again.

@@chaosborn8935 late answer, you can set a variable for that item, make an conditional branch with that variable and the amount you want of that, example: Control Variable Potion = amount of potions Conditional branch: If Variable Potion >=6 (proceed Quest) Else: Find more Potions The Branch only proceeds the quest if the player has enough of that item, if not the "else" will trigger I hope i could help you even after 2 years

Though this video is straight forward, I’m having an issue when setting up the event to where the same dialog will happen if you talk to the character for the second time before actually doing the task. How do you keep that from happening?

I know this tutorial is old, but I have a question. I finished the tutorial, but when I finish the cutscene and get my reward, I can just continue talking to the man and keep getting 100 free gold. Do you know how to stop this?

I assume you would turn on the self switch at the end of the event.

I know this video is three years old but I followed it and after the coin man leaves the building, but as soon as I collect the coins and he just skips to his variable > or = to 4 stage instead of doing the dialogue and giving me gold for finding his coins. Edit: For some reason on the fourth coin I grab, thats when he skips to his "Thanks again for all your help" dialogue

simple, just make a battle event where when the monster is at 0% health it ups a variable for that quest.

Make sure your very first event doesnt have a condition set to it. Eg. When you go talk to the little girl to find the fox, it doesn't say, (Variable is = 1)

Great video, but I have to nitpick about one part. The phrase "you got given 100 coins" isn't proper English. It should say "you were given 100 coins" or " you received 100 coins" The man should say "Oh, Thank you" not thanks you. Overall a very informative video about working the RPG Maker.
