You ALWAYS want to connect your HDMI cable last, no matter what. Now, it won't be an issue in your case, where the Atomos and the camera have seperate batteries, but if they used the same battery and you created a ground loop through the HDMI, you'd fry the HDMI port of the BMPCC. By adding the HDMI last, after all power is established, you won't risk your HDMI port.

For what it's worth, you might want to look at the Tilta Extended Quick Release plate... it will let you connect to TWO screw points on your cage and it's designed for the RS2 slot... this way it doesn't twist and turn. I've found that with a bit of weight sometimes in a panning movement the BMPCC will loosen the baseplate a bit and then throw it out of alignment... that is, until I got that extended quick release plate.
@bradpaulp
@bradpaulp 2 года назад
Oh hey, in your 8:00 section, welcome to the world of RS2 rod mounting... i ran into this EXACT same issue. There's a couple solutions. 1) you can get small rig components. you'll need the small rig RS2 extended quick release adapter + small rig focus motor rod mount (those are the exact terms) - the extended quick release plate is neat because it completely replaces the DJI one. You mount it directly to the camera and then slide it in the little tracks. - then the rod mount works with that place and lets you mount the rod much closer so there's a positive connection with the focus motor, nice and tight. 2) the other option is small rig makes a 12mm to 15mm adapter. (The DJI rod is a 12mm that only dji uses). anyway. you would bolt it to the top of the cage if you can and then the rod basically is at the top of the camera, and then you just have to mount the focus motor upside down. no biggie. hope that all helps!
@bradpaulp
@bradpaulp 2 года назад
ahhh and 19:40 yet anotherrrrr part... Tilta has a side clamping counterweight. It hooks onto the roll bar. really slim out the way. and then you can screw on a couple counterweights.

@@bradpaulp Thanks Brad! Yes I was kind of annoyed about that, and the fact that it uses a 12 mm rod threw me off
@powellfilmmaking
@powellfilmmaking 2 года назад
@@bradpaulp I actually realized after the making of this video that I could mount the cheese plate in another set of holes to get it further in, now it gives me plenty of wiggle room for balancing! Thanks for all the help Brad, I will definitely check out all the parts you've mentioned!

This is a pretty great and tight rig. I remember struggling a lot to balance the rigged 6k on an RS2, kinda soured me on BMPCC's awkward form factor
@powellfilmmaking
@powellfilmmaking Год назад
Yes, the form factor is annoying. In today's market, I think for a lot of people it makes more sense to get a Canon C200 since the price has dropped to $3,500 usd!

Oh ... and release 0004 of the DJI Ronin RS2 Firmware seemingly fixes the BMPCC camera control for BMPCC firmware 7.3. Not tried it myself yet, but will in the next day or two.

If you are using the usbc for camera control, I think it isnt necessary to use the focus motor, you can use the camera focus control with the wheel of the ronin
@powellfilmmaking

You can, but it's not smooth at all. It would work in a pinch to get critical focus but not for doing focus pulling mid-shot, which I do all the time.

AWESOME video man! I've been looking for different power options and currently had my v-mount off to the side, and I am totally now going to be placing it underneath like how you explained. Question, what focus ring are you using for your 18-35?
@powellfilmmaking

Glad you found value in it! It is a focus ring from Tilta, I like them because they are seamless and they are pretty cheap.

Great video and nice built. I would probably not give up the latest firmware on the bmpcc for the few camera controls on the gimbal. The touchscreen of the camera is still pretty reachable and most of the time you would not change any settings during recording anyways. I believe with going back to 6.9 you also give up the new and improved color science gen. 5 on the camera and the added constant quality Q1 and Q3 modes. Too me this seem to be too much of a trade off just to be able to change a few settings from the gimbal. Also it´s worth checking if DJI maybe fixed it in a firmware update. I'm using the Zhyiun Weebill S and recently updated the firmware and now the camera controls work with firmware 7.3 on my pocket 4K. So maybe you can have the best of both worlds ;) Good luck on your next shoots!
@powellfilmmaking

Yes it is a win lose situation but I mainly really wanted to be able to use the record button on the gimbal. For the type of work I do, being able to get recording at a moment's notice is important to me so I don't miss anything important. Keeping my eyes peeled for a new update though!
@hethfilms

@@powellfilmmaking Ah yes, forgot about the record button, good point. Hope DJI will fix this situation, the RS2 is a much better choice compared to my Weebill S in terms of payload etc.

Seemingly it was solved in a firmware update of the RS2 about 10 months ago, so your Ronin RS2 may be on an older firmware. Worth looking into.

I'm building out a studio setup for my office and looking at the 6kpro and this rig, trying to decide on a storage solution, is there an easy way to run an SSD and the RS2 with Raven Eye and everything? The 1 USB C port on the camera seems to be the limiting factor.
@powellfilmmaking
@powellfilmmaking 11 месяцев назад
There isn’t a good solution that I know of. I don’t personally use the Raveneye, at least not very much so this isn’t an issue for me. Using SiliconPower CFAST cards is the way to go, but I totally understand why you’d want to record straight to SSD for studio work.

How strong is the focus motor on the RS2? Just wanted to know if it'll be able to handle lenses that has a "slightly" stiffer focus ring than others.

I think so, but not quite sure as far as mounting the v-mount. Because if you lower that v-mount much further it will interfere with the roll axis. I'd be curious to see!

Get a straight hdmi calble. That coiled one will unbalance your RS2. No slack.

That's the point of the coils, I just stretch them out now and then and they stay tidy while giving me slack!

@@powellfilmmaking Thanks for the insanely quick response 👍 😀. I very much like your wedding videos (wasn't quite sure if the new ones were already with your new setup 😀). My gimbal payload ist maybe 1 kg lighter but has similar vertical hight cause I'm riding my monitor directly on top of my camera. I'm still operating the Ronin-S (original) and also built a support system (ready rig style for it by myself) but I do find that it's quite hard to get smooth enough footage in 24 fps for use in narrative work. I'd like to achieve shots like you see on bigger sets with heavy steadicam setups which can often look like completely looked of or dolly shots. I've got close to 3 years experience in balancing gimbals but even with perfect balance the Ronin-S and car mode (similar to super smooth) enabled and super tuned custom setting it still doesn't quite smooth the shots out in a way so that the footage isn't that shaky on bigger screens. I thought about upgrading to the Ronin-RS2 or maybe the Ronin-RS 3 Pro but as you know it's quite a lot of money and I wasn't sure about the real performance upgrades. There is so little 24 fps footage online. And your setup looked interesting to me because of the vertical distribution of weight. Kind Regards Willi

@@eqilibrius As far as getting really smooth shots, I mastering the "Ninja Walk" is a game changer, at least is has been for me filming weddings. I crouch and bend my knees and walk heel to toe, rolling my feet and being extremely nimble. This smooths out vertical shake really well for me! You probably already know this but I thought it was worth sharing in case you didn't.
@eqilibrius
@eqilibrius Год назад
@@powellfilmmaking Thanks for the answer. Yes I already knew that technique but it´s still nice of you to mention it. The ready rig like support system does take out a lot of the movement already and combined with the walk it does look amazing. My Problem occurs more in situations with objectes or actors closer to your lens in more calm and static scenes. in those cases unwanted movements can distract a lot from the performanc or intended effect on the audiance. Thanks for the chat. looking forwadr to your next vid. :-)
