hate to be that guy but the old english name for starling is 'staer'. The origin is unknown but survives in German as 'Star' for the bird. Originally Staerling was the name given to the juveniles but ended up a blanket term for the whole species. They were still called stares in Ireland and the UK up until the 20th century.
