I called the manifold the throttle body and vice versa a couple times so apologies there lol YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE THE MANIFOLD!!! It's just 2X easier but 2x more the headache to remove the starter :) REMOVE THE NEGATIVE TERMINAL ON THE BATTERY FIRST!!!! I couldn't find a tutorial anywhere on how to remove/install a starter for RSX type-s. I forgot to mention that mine is a 2004. Not sure if the '05-'06 are different. If your car is making a weird grinding noise upon start or if you turn the key and it sputters until it starts with some grinding, its most likely your starter...it was for me. SIDE NOTE: I forgot to mention in the video that you will most likely need a pry bar of some sort to remove the manifold. For me, the manifold didn't come out because the alternator got in the way just enough to where I couldn't get the right angle to get it out. You may want another person there to help. Taking off your front bumper helps also. If you know what you're doing, this should be a 1-3 hour job. If you don't or if you were a first timer attempting this without the right tools like me....3-4 days LOL!! Be prepared for tight squeeze areas when you remove the manifold brackets from the bottom. Be careful when you remove the sensor from the block as the plastic is cheap and if you're an idiot like me and pull the plastic instead of the sensor from the clip, it will break off needing to be JB welded back on ha ha! Good Luck and if I missed anything hit me up and I will answer if i can :)

I tried to explain as much as a could on this thing lol....get the car up high enough and you should be able to get to the top bolt, but I suggest having someone up top guiding you to get to that top bolt on the starter....you can see it if you look through the TB side...good luck!!!

nice vid. i just did mine today, its an 02. i do recommend removing the manifold. it just saves the headache. i just remove the throttlebody and move it to the side, then remove the manifold, 2 bolts under. and straightforward from there. manifold didnt want to come out though. i had to remove the stud to remove the manifold. i wanna try it again from underneath without touching the manifold. i was searching for the 17mm bolt on the inner side but there wasnt any. its a long 14 extension bolt

Just changed the starter on my wife's '04 Acura RSX, 2.0L V-tec, NOT the S type. I removed the throttle body and the intake manifold. It was extra work but made starter removal easy. It was the original starter, the bottom bolt was FUUUCKING TIGHT, and clearance didn't allow any leverage. I couldn't get the intake manifold out of the car until I loosened the top cross member with the hood latch. Took about 3.5 hrs cause the wife wanted to help. Could've done it alone in about two. Women. XD

Hard to understand what you're saying but i''ve said multiple time and even in the "Description" that you do not NEEEED to take it off but it makes it SO easy to remove the starter if you do...for first timers this job is a headache so hopefully this helps with those people trying to do this for the first time :)

I did replace that starter twice, one way taking off the manifold and the other way NOT taking it off..
@RUZTY1311
@RUZTY1311 12 лет назад
No you don't HAVE to remove the alternator but IF you go the route of taking the manifold off you will need an extra pair of hands to pry the manifold from the head with a pry bar. It's tricky but we make it work. I would recommend trying to remove the starter without taking the manifold off but if for some reason you cant get the car high enough to reach up in there then remove the manifold and its 2x easier just more of a hassle :)

Well, I sure appreciated your video tutorial! I have a very detailed manual on my Acura, but somehow it seems to lack on explanation of where the starter actually is! It's lousy at showing it. Anyways, I highly recommend taking the intake manifold off! I can't even see how I would do it without taking it off on my non type S Acura RSX 2003. I would add this, from my experience today. I had to take the metal rail with the front hood latch and radiator brackets free to get the non-metal manifold out. That was the key to solving the puzzle of "what? why can't this thing get out of here!???!" I sure am glad you posted this video buddy! Thanks again! There were plenty of electrical connections to disconnect!! Plenty! There are 4 bolts on the thing that connects to the intake manifold on the right-hand side that must be taken out to remove it---12 mm I think they were. So, first remove the top cover (two bolts), remove four from the intake manifold, remove the air filter housing and disconnect venting, get the four bolts holding on the thing that attaches on the right of the intake manifold, disconnect hoses and electrical connectors, remove brackets and such from the rail that holds the latch on it (not the fuel rail), remove the intake manifold completely out, and "Wahlah!" There's the starter!!!! It looks as though the rest will be easy-going now!

You're very welcome!! I'm glad I've helped out so many even though I no longer have the car haha! And yes I would recommend taking the manifold off as well. For me it was a 2 person job to take it out because of the alternator getting in the way BUT maybe there was an easier way, I just didn't find it haha

@@RUZTY1311 that’s what I’m trying to do I’ve removed all bolts and nuts and now I’m stuck on what seems to be I think a motor mount . Thats if I shimmy it to the left But if I do try and shimmy towards the the right side I’m am running into the alternator . Obviously easier to take out the alternator … right .. The alternator is just 3 bolts right ??? If so i might consider just taking it off .. no big issue just loosen belt and take off bolts … sounds easy right ?! But when you got them shrek hands everything’s 2x harder lol . * I got a bit experience * so I think that’s what I’m going to do . Take off the alternator and proceed with my starter/thermostat replacement.. any suggestions before I go head first tomorrow? I’ll keep y’all updated on wether I succeed or fail!! Lol

I talked about a copper piece on the starter that I didn't bolt on that I THOUGHT didn't make the starter kick over if it wasn't bolted on tight....but It turned out it was a different bolt on the starter that wasn't tight and it was causing intermittent starts so make sure everything is in place and tight :)
@RUZTY1311
@RUZTY1311 12 лет назад
I didn't get one because we didn't damage it when we removed the manifold from the head. It only bent a little bit which isn't that big a deal. In the case that you crack it or severely bend it then i would recommend getting a new one but it's not 100% necessary.

Yea I'm not sure if they are exactly the same but I've seen pictures of the base rsx engine bay and it looks to be the same....if you have the lifts you SHOULD be able to do it without taking the manifold off...it's just going to take some MAJOR patience...hopefully it's easier for your car then it was for this one lol Good luck!

@X0UKI The bolt that's on the bottom that you can see from underneath the car should be the 17mm and like you said the one on top that you can see only AFTER taking the manifold off, is the 14 extension bolt. One of the ways I was able to get to the top bolt without taking the manifold off, was to have my brother on top shining a light through the hole in the middle of the mani and he directed me where to go when I was underneath...definitely not an easy job for a first timer :)

You need to READ "buddy". If you would have read my description I said clearly that you DON'T have to take the manifold off. I too was able to do it from underneath. I have plenty experience working on my own cars. After the first time, which I admit was a little bit of a headache, I was able to switch out the starter in under an hour. If this video didn't help you then don't leave a comment, just piss off somewhere else....please.

Rudis Ascencio I just replaced the starter this past weekend on my friend's Rsx Type S. It's pretty straight forward. No need to take off the intake manifold. No need to unhook any coolant hoses. I took off the front bumper. I unbolted the bracket that holds the a/c line to the front metal beam. Then I unbolted the metal beam (size 10mm bolts) that the hood latch is on. Pulled that out and hung it out of the way. No need to remove hood latch. Next I unbolted the two small metal brackets holding the radiator in place. This will give you room to move things around. Next thing to do is to remove the coolant overflow reservoir. After you have that out of the way, you can unplug, unbolt, and remove the fan that is under it. Now you should have plenty of room to remove the starter. You will have to remove both metal support brackets underneath the intake manifold. Unplug two connectors that will be next to those brackets. You might have to clip those factory zip ties holding the harness to move things around to in order to get a ratchet in the area. You will also unplug the knock sensor that's near the block. After you are done doing that, you are ready to remove the 17mm and 14mm bolts holding the starter. You will then be able to pull the starter down and out and have access to the size 12mm that's holding the harness onto the starter and also pull out the last connector near it. Install is reverse procedure of everything you just did. *Keep in mind to not damage any of the air condition lines by accidentally pulling/leaning on them.

Well....as long as you can get the car up pretty high (doesn't have to be lift in a mechanic shop high) then it will make things easier BUT you will probably if not more than likely need an extra pair of hands. IF you take the manifold off you will be able to knock it out pretty easily but taking the manifold off is a hassle. In my opinion whichever way you choose, it still sucks lol Hopefully I pointed enough out to make it easier for you :) Good luck!!

OK so for some this helped and for others it didn't. In any case, I think it's helped more than not so I'm leaving the video on my channel haha I don't REALLY care because I no longer have the car, but at the time it was the best I could do and did so because there wasn't a video out there on how to remove the starter. I realize that it isn't a "step by step" type of video so It may be hard for some people to follow...
@RUZTY1311
@RUZTY1311 12 лет назад
Putting it back in would pretty much be the exact same way as taking it out, just in reverse...you wont need to worry about the alternator UNLESS you take off the manifold which would require the prying of it...but the alternator should not be removed....IF you want to make things really easy on yourself and you have the time and skill, then remove the manifold, alternator and whatever else you want but for me the most convenient way was to just leave everything in place and get the car up :)

Ok so after having to Install another starter I found that YOU DON'T have to take the Manifold off to get the starter out. You just need to get the car up pretty high and possibly take off the black frame on the bottom. However, it does make it 10X easier if you take the manifold off, but not without the extra work obviously :)

Hey guys I've removed my starte on my RsX and these romers of removing manifold and throttle body not true? I went under the car removed the plastic guard off and from the bottom the bolt on the right is visible so u loosen that bolt and here's where I was confused too?? Pay close attention the second bolt is a extended bolt witch essentially means I need no extension socket it's a bit of a squeeze but it's possible a small torque wrench is recommended

Honda engineers aren't stupid removal of the intake would be a design flaw on the type S. I just installed my new denso starter and I was faced with the same situation, if you think outside of the box like I do, you can see why Honda Engineers made it possible for the front rad support bracket to be removed to gain access to the alt and starter.

Ha ha ha....well....I wouldn't say ANY car making a grinding noise upon cold start is anywhere NEAR normal...especially when it hadn't been doing it for the first 5 years that I had the car and ESPECIALLY when the damn thing left me on the side of the road stranded one day. If that's normal sell your RSX because that's a no bueno situation lol It got to the point where it wouldn't start and I traced it to the starter :) Yes this was happening to me but it was 10x more extreme than normal lol

Type S helms manual doesn't say to remove manifold. The base model has a different starter which is harder to get to due to the hex nut being above and not on the side like the type s. On the type s all you need to do is lift your car, remove the 2 wires of the starter and remove the 2 bolts. Done deal. im out
