I'm pretty sure that Gus was kidding/trying to get gav to be confused, and neither we really correct about touchpads. For most screens, phones, tablets, etc. It's the electric charge in your finger that detects it, and with DS's it's pressure sensitive so the stylus just pushes it in. Hence why you can have multiple touch points on phones but not on a DS.

PENGUlN124 Not even that, you _can_ do that running down a mountain shit, but it's just close to completely impossible. I also believe that someone in WWI or WWII was in a plane that was crashing, had no parachute, so he jumped out over a mountain, slide down it after hitting some trees, and lived...then got captured by some people. Not exactly like what Gavin was talking about, but it's close. I could probably find a link to that story, but I'm way too lazy.

I liked Sally, but as someone who likes physics and loves flying, I was about to pull my hair out when they were talking about a plane on a treadmill. The Mythbusters tested it as proof; the treadmill in no way effects the thrust of the propeller or jet. If this treadmill was going 200 mph the plane would be pushed forward by the engine as the wheels are free floating. They would be spinning about 280 mph at take off in a small propeller aircraft even though the plane would only be traveling about 80 mph.
@RandomCarrot2806

+wthall11689 the thought experiment is if a plane can take off while stationary, not if it can get off the treadmill.

I have to say, this is one of my favorite podcasts of all time. The podcast crew totally nailed the formula of this broadcast by having the best cast members (in my opinion), with the addition of a young, attractive, and supremely intelligent British woman, against the back drop of a live event with real life fans. I was thoroughly entertained. I loved science questions being answered, both those that I was intensely frustrated with due to the crew's ignorance on certain subjects, as well as the topics that I had no fucking clue about in the first place.

***** It's not though. That means there could be anywhere from 6 - 1 trillion. Obviously there aren't 1 trillion senses, but you get the idea. More than 5 just means you could make up a number and technically you would be right, as long as that number is greater than 5. That's not definite at all.

Just a fact i feel like sharing. While Burnie is correct that Fahrenheit is a good way to measure the survivable spectrum for humans, that's not how the scale was constructed. In 1724 the German physicist Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit designed his scale with 0* as the freezing point of salted ice water (ammonium chloride, not sodium chloride) and 100* being the human body temp (the inaccuracy was later fixed to give us today's reading) The purpose of these two numbers was that they were constant (mostly as body temp varies by a few degrees). The problem this was meant to solve was that at that point in scientific history many scientists were exploring the fundamentals of heat (thermodynamics) however all thermometers were made using different materials (alcohol/mercury) and had different scales (most scales were built randomly, or were made based on that days weather). The Fahrenheit scale however could be easily replicated very accurately and so different scientists were able to exchange and present findings. However the most important use was for exploring the idea of absolute zero (this was after the discovery that cold is only the absence of heat, hence scientist theorized that there must be a lower limit and they were trying to find it) The thermometers with a unified scale allowed scientists to record the freezing point of gases with a measurement that other scientists would know and hence test/replicate/dispute/agree. Fahrenheit used to be the "scientific" thermal measurement where as today we consider Celsius or Kelvin (Kelvin is just Celsius only the scale starts at absolute zero (-273*C=0K, 0*C=273K, 100*C=373K...)) The reason Celsius was not invented/used (I'm not sure when it was created) at the time was because the boiling point of water changes with pressure, its 100*C at Standard Pressure (100kPa) and because pressure changes with elevation two scientists in different cities may have different boiling points for water
@thehermitman2701

A plane... on a treadmill... here's just a spec of info from an aerospace engineering student. 1) Airflow over the wings = Lift; NO airflow over the wings = NO lift. Treadmill=unimportant; 2) Put a plane in front of a massive fan: Say the airplane needs an airspeed of 200 Mph to lift off, usually it achieves that speed rolling down the runway, rolling because the wheels are NOT motorized, the thrust from the jet engines/propellers provide the forward force needed to achieve the 200 Mph required for lift off. For the plane to work like this in front of a big fan, this fan would need to be as large in diameter as the wingspan of the plane at least, and to blow air at least at 200 Mph in order to achieve the airspeed of the airflow over the wings required for lift off, provided that the power plant of the plane is running (either the jet engines or the propeller) as it would be for a 200 Mph airspeed, the plane would lift off from the surface it's sitting on, but will appear to hover above the ground not moving forward or backward, because the engines are pushing the plane 200 Mph toward the fan and at the same time the fan is pushing the plane away at 200 Mph, thus canceling the relative speed of the aircraft relative to the ground (aka "ground speed") but the airspeed would remain at the necessary 200 Mph required for flight. This phenomenon happens in real life to light planes, when flying into the wind, and if the wind is matching the speed of the aircraft moving forward, the aircraft is stationary above the ground and not moving toward the destination. Larger aircraft use this effect when flying downwind, airliners ride the jet stream which has a speed of around 900 Kph, coupled with the speed of the airliner (around 800 Kph), the airliner basically doubles its ground speed (gets faster to the destination, in about half the time) without increasing its airspeed (airflow over the wings remains at 800 Kph, and not at 1700 Kph, which is in excess of 1.4 Mach, which is way more than enough to strip the wings of the plane and peel the skin of the plane of the fuselage structure.) Trust me, I'm an engineer. For Gavin, and the rest of the Podcast. Keep up the great work! Cheers!

If an airplane is on a treadmill it still can take off. It does not get forward momentum from the wheels, but rather the propellers/jet engines. The treadmill just has to keep up with force the jet engines/propellers are applying to to the plane... If this doesn't make sense look up a past Mythbuster episode.
@TheGimpyGamer.
@TheGimpyGamer. 9 лет назад
But the plane will not get any lift as there's no air moving to create the lift for the wings... The engines are pushing air behind it but the treadmill will keep it still. Propellers on the other hand I can see that the air can get pushed through the wings to create lift but I don't think it would be enough. I personally take Myth busters with a grain of salt.
@mitcheljazdzewski6341
@mitcheljazdzewski6341 9 лет назад
the airplane would not stay on the treadmill because the airplane does not use the wheels as a source of movement/power. The propeller on the front is the source to the movement of the plane. So the plane would take off... if you don't believe me look it up.
@mitcheljazdzewski6341
@mitcheljazdzewski6341 9 лет назад
What I am trying to say is unlike a vehicle, a plane's engine and wheels are not directly connect. Due to this a belt of a treadmill would have no significant effect from preventing a plane from moving forward and eventually taking off.
@cookiegaming98
@cookiegaming98 9 лет назад
I'm am currently studying aerospace engineering in college and I have to tell you that the plane will not take off if the speed of the wheel match the speed of the belt because the and is technically stationary when compared to the relative air of the surrounding area and the power generated by a propeller can not push enough air over the aero foil to generate the lift and stability needed to take off let alone be air born for more than a second before the the motion of the engines pits the aircraft into a roll onto the ground :)

How can you people think that a airplane on a treadmill will not take off? Unlike a car the wheels are not powered in any way, All the power of the airplane goes into the prop that then pulls the airplane forward through the air, Regardless of how fast the wheels are spinning.
@MCTaezer
@MCTaezer 9 лет назад
Wind isn't running under the wings, because the plane isn't passing through any air. It is basically just rolling.
@1Thatstrangeguy
@1Thatstrangeguy 9 лет назад
Its still going to go forward and eventually take off, regardless of how fast the wheels are rolling.
@MCTaezer
@MCTaezer 9 лет назад
It is going forward, but the treadmill is pushing it backward, so it doesn't gain lift.
@1Thatstrangeguy
@1Thatstrangeguy 9 лет назад
the wheels will spin twice as fast because all the forward thrust comes from the propeller or jet turbines, The wheels do not provide any power at all to the ground at all and therefore are irrelevant.
@MCTaezer
@MCTaezer 9 лет назад
The wheels mean nothing, yes. The air passing under the wings makes the plane go up. If the plane is standing still, just with the wheels rolling and engines on, it gains speed, yes, but it isn't passing through any air.

She's obviously brilliant, but I'm pretty sure she's wrong on the mirror question. The issue is the mirror instantaneously appears, therefore the first light reflected will be the light from a year ago (not two as claimed), and we would only be able to see this light reflected a year later. So it would be two year old light, but it would be (from the point in time when we started looking in the telescope) a year old. I think that makes sense.

I was there for the live recording, people were watching on their phones because all they could see was the back of your heads and because they can't hear your conversation in that room lol. The bar room was somewhat audible with the speakers, but then there was the problem of not being able to see you guys...

I don't know why, but I just got a good laugh when Burnie said they are broadcasting from the Pontiac Silver Dome as a joke. I live in Michigan nothing has really happened in that stadium for about 10 years. (For those that don't know, the Silver Dome was the previous home of the NFL team Detroit Lions who now play at Ford Field in downtown Detroit.)
