Matthew Lewis How many Americans know anything in detail about British history? Do they learn a lot about ours? In detail, like our prime ministers, our court trials. How many American kids remember stuff like that? Could they answer 16 questions about our history? We learn a lot of American history. and it's given more importance, as it's in our final years of school. The one thing I think it is important to learn about is the slave trade, as we played a major part in ruining lives. But here, this is how I answer the questions here. Most of them are probably wrong but this is what I got from schooling. 1. The fourth of July is a day where Americans celebrate becoming independent from Britain and having signed something. 2. Abraham Lincoln was a president, he was killed in a theatre, but beforehand fought against slavery with the south (that was only because he was a massive racist though, he wanted to send the slaves back to Africa and other colonies). 3. America was originally home to Native Americans, but they had fought against the colonization, leaving millions dead when they were massacred. 4. No fucking clue. 5. George Washington, because Benjamin Franklin wasn't a president. He was a founding father. 6. 100, 50, 20, 1. That's a guess and I don't care who's on them. 7. Prohibition was when it was made illegal to drink or have alcohol, much like how drugs are treated now, but people would have parties and underground bars with alcohol anyway. 8. No clue. Legislation? 9. Vietnam is a country in Asia. To go into more depth, there were two parts, north and south and America tried helping the south? against the north. Probably wrong. 10. Right... 11. We all know about WW2, why is started, etc. I don't know much about America's involvement in it other than that they were allied with us only after being attacked. Also, bombing Japan. 12. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor? 13. 50 14. 3? I dunno. 15. No clue. Don't care. 16. Watergate has something to do with Nixon covering it up. Goddamnit I sat through Frost/Nixon and didn't learn anything of historical importance. We're taught plenty of British History covering the Norman Invasion to feudalism, also of The Tudors and the Spanish Armada, the War of the Roses, Hundred Years War, and Imperialism to Constitutional Monarchy to World Wars One and Two. Learned of all of these British History Topics in High School.

Japan was at war with China in 1937, but most people say the war didn't start until 1939 when Germany launched it's offensive into Poland, causing the UK and France to declare war, then causing France to lose yet again and crippled the British Army. Were it not for the British navy and the Royal Air Force, the UK would've been knocked out as well. The medias (more mainstream) representations of american history as well as many public schools american history curriculum is not always the best or most accurate representation or retelling of american history. I say this from my personal experience as well as from studying actual history.

The equivalent question to ask an American would probably be about Henry VIII, Churchill, the Crimean War, the World Wars and Imperialism, and the average American would be able to talk about any of those topics for 10 seconds without sounding like an idiot unlike the guy in this video. Of course a person from the UK would know that WWII started in 1939 and lasted until 1945, and would know that Vietnam is in Asia and not South America.

Well in American Textbooks, the whole Vietnam War section is only like 3 pages long, with no real details. I am guessing the same with Britain and the Revolutionary War and Germany with pretty much everything ever.

Also, if you look at a British history textbook, events like the Revolutionary War are miniscule events in there. Their history is far more vast than American history since they've been around longer than the US.

They dont cover it, secondary education covers the wall street crash, I imagine that america doesnt teach any british history either

abc 123 Not in AMERICAN History no, but in World History we learn about the Industrial Revolution, and later about British Imperialim, then WW1, then WW2. Oh and we learn that the Lords rose against King John and made him sign the Manga Carta. And the GLorious Revolution, how Mary and her husband replaced her father Jamesin a mostly bloodless revolt.

The English flag is a Red Cross with a white background. The flag they're showing I of the United Kingdom (Wales, Scotland, N.Ireland and England). The U.Ks flag is a mixture of the English, Scottish and N.Irish flag, which doesn't go with the title of the video. The reason there is no Welsh part on the UKs flag is because when the UK was formed Wales had been conquered by England but they eventually faught back.

pijef 1) Education index just shows how many years people spend in education. It doesn't have any reflection whatsoever on the quality of teaching. The college system in the USA leads to undergrads studying multiple subjects and spending more time mastering the one they finally choose to do, whereas many other nations solely study one which is one factor in why the 'education index' is higher. 2) IQ is an awful determinant for success of education, but the averages I find rank USA + UK both higher and lower so consistently that it can't be taken as any decent evidence. 3) Both the UK and US have brilliant, world leading universities. The US has more unsurprisingly given the higher population and greater number of cities. They are generally even on quality with this considered. What's the point in slagging off comments saying that they're 'bullshit facts'. Do some of your own research bud!
