My previous video on cleaning the bore of my Mannlicher 1888/90 from Royal Tiger Imports revealed deep pitting in the last few inches of the barrel. Can I improve it?

I have sanded a very rusty bore before. First I did scrub it with a bristle brush. Then I made a wood plug by pushing it repeatedly thru the bore. I added lapping compound to the shaped wood plug, that step really seemed to redefine what was left of the rifling.

I never thought I would say this, but: I'm glad you ran some sandpaper down the barrel! Plus, if you ever wanted to sleeve the inside of the barrel in the future, you'll be one step closer!
@rakumprojects
@rakumprojects Год назад
It felt just plain wrong to put sandpaper in the bore! But I got over it quick when I saw how much better the pitted spots looked
@charlene2400

This one was probably best used to cut down and make a carbine, but I like your idea. A plus, is it still leaves options open, such as proper cut down, or sleeving.

If I ordered one of RTI's Ethiopian cut down Mannlichers I'd have no hesitation about cutting it down. Would probably look pretty cool

Well I might just have to do this with my 1888/90 I got from RTI. Nice video!

The polishing's biggest effect it will have on your shooting will be to reduce the metal (i.e. jacket) fouling the rough bore will collect. It was good to remove the flaky rust on the bore's surface, but that would have probably shot clean with only a few rounds. The badly pitted bore closer to the chamber will still likely strip a lot of jacket material. Expect a LOT of blue/green patches when you clean it. You simply need a new barrel to fix the issue.

BTW if ya would what is the tool ya use to measure the bore called.. I've been reloading for decades and don't know :( TY.. MB.
@rakumprojects
@rakumprojects 10 месяцев назад
It's called a small hole gauge. It's a machinist measuring tool, not really made for reloading specifically but they come in handy. My set is made by Starrett.

Mines in similar condition but I was planning to change the caliber anyway, I wonder if the action is strong enough for 54r
@rakumprojects
@rakumprojects Год назад
You're swapping the barrel? Most people say you can shoot 7.62x54r out of Mannlicher 88's, however the bullet is undersized at .311" vs .329"

@@rakumprojects I would like to, I just keep hearing about how the action is too weak and full size smokeless cartridges would blow the bolt out like miss assembled ross mk3, thanks for the input. Also it’s proving hard to find replacement barrels let alone a barrel in a different cartridge

hey dude try to recut the rifling would be a cool project

Have you ever tried the technique of shooting 2 or 3 lead bullets with their grease grooves filled with grinding compound? I remember and old magazine article written by Ross Seyfried on the subject.

Never heard of that before but I'll look into it. Seems like a good idea for bores this bad.

Goddamn. Mine luckily still has rifling! Have you tried oiling your stock with linseed oil, mine came out great.

@@rakumprojects It's bore and wood look better but above the stockline is a little rough.

Instead you can leave the barrel and action in diesal for about a week max it will clear the barrel better

Test and see if a smooth bore performs better than a sewer pipe rti bore

I got a Mannlicher 95 from them that I'm working on now. Bore is much better than the 88/90 since there's rifling throughout but there's still deep pitting. I'm going to clean it out but nothing beyond that. I'll compare it's groups to the 88/90
@DesertCoyotes
@DesertCoyotes Год назад
Jesus....no....I've shot guns with heavily pitted bores and bullets don't get stuck...at least before there was a chance it might shoot minutes of car now you'll be lucky if it even sends bullets down range. Also you can fit the barrel of M95s and such in even the small 7x mini lathes so you must have even a tinier lathe....
@rakumprojects
@rakumprojects Год назад
I have a 10x20 with a .75" through bore. To fit the barrel, I'd have to remove the front sight base since it measures .910" without the blade. Then I'd have the problem of 20+ inches of barrel and receiver sticking out the back end. And even if I could get it in a lathe, what kind of tool do I use? A small boring bar wouldn't be rigid enough and a reamer would probably need to be custom made. As for how it shot, I guess you'll have to subscribe to see the results ;)
@DesertCoyotes
@DesertCoyotes Год назад
@@rakumprojects I did lathe work on a m95 barrel in my 7x lathe, removing the front sight and counter boring would of been a much better solution and not much more work, and would of given better results. I pulled the front sight on my M95 and it was easy. Regardless I would of shot it before to see if it was even necessary. You would true the barrel, drill and them ream. You could use a boring bar, certainly has been done before with low feeds and speeds. Far as barrel sticking out, also a non issue, keep the speeds low and it will be fine. I've done work on 20-30" barreled actions with the end sticking out.
@CheemskoGiondau
@CheemskoGiondau Год назад
You could destroy the barrel crown during the honing process , man the thing will lose it's accuracy and became a smoothbore straight pull !
@rakumprojects
@rakumprojects Год назад
I would never do this to a rifle with a decent bore, but in my opinion a smoothbore is better (and safer) than a bore with deep pitting.
@CheemskoGiondau

Nah , anyway but did the gun barrel crown still there , and can you take a picture of the sight after assembling the rifle and put it in the video for us
@CheemskoGiondau
@CheemskoGiondau Год назад
And thanks man , at first i think u were insane to honing the bore now , i understand that you just trying to remove the rust inside the barrel while still maintain the accuracy of the gun by not destroy the muzzle crown
@CheemskoGiondau
@CheemskoGiondau Год назад
Did you have any plans on the gun new ammunition ? , this is an mannlicher 88 and this mean the rifle still not being converted to use the new m95/30 8x56r , and still shooting the round nose m93 8x50r austro hungarian service rounds
@rakumprojects
@rakumprojects Год назад
@@CheemskoGiondau I have some rounds made from 7.62x54r cases, using the same technique I used to make Siamese 8x50r. I loaded them light to account for the weaker 88 action. Now I just need to make it to the range to try them out.
