metal plate, (heat sink ) is a briliant idea, i had that on my 3090s but i will do for 3080s too, specially founders edition. I personaly did the copper mod but any mod is good. With the 3080 founders edition some of the cards uses 1.5 some of the cards uses 2mm so its really pain.

I got had the same problem and I SLOVED it. Only applicable to FE Founder Edition. On the front (Core) side use 2 mm or 1.5mm ONLY!!!. If you use 2mm make sure its a soft pad, not a hard one. Hard pad will create a bigger gap between the processor and the plate. Not recommended Gelid pads. The most important part if high VRAM Temp. Put some thermal paste on the metal side of the cooling block. Between the pad and the metal side of the cooling plate is rough and the paste will help a lot. Put a little more if using 1.5mm pads. On the bask side use 2mm pad only not more then that. It solves it all you high temp.

I started with 2.0 on the front and had to switch to 1.5mm also. These pads are to hard and do not squish down well. (I also did a 3mm on back and ended up switching to 2mm) In the end I am very happy with the 1.5 and 2mm.

nice video bro, have you tried playing games after the mod? what were the gpu core and hot spot temps??

Hi, I have played a few games, but most of mine on steam are not to crazy intensive. I dont tend to watch the temp unless the fan kicks up, and they are quiet when I play now. Sorry, I kinda rushed that video and didn't really mention the improvements. Basically my mem junction would hit 110 and the card would throttle when I got it (mining eth). Plus the fans would get way too loud and annoying. The pad mod dropped that memory junction down to around 88 - 90. But really liked how the fan noise also dropped. Right now I see my memory junction is at 90 still, while I am mining ravencoin while still using the pc. GPU is at 58 and Hot spot at 71. My room is pretty warm though as we are getting some hot days right now. When I do play a game I stop mining. For me this was totally worth it just to lower that fan noise. A couple of those connectors were a pain though and I was afraid of breaking the card. But glad I did it. Hope that helps.

Great info. does that heatsink really help on the top of it??
@MyRandomTechBlog
@MyRandomTechBlog 2 года назад
I think it does help a little as It does get warm so seems to be dissipateing some heat. But not as much as I had hoped. It was my first attempt for cooling the card as I wasn't sure I wanted to open it up for the pad mod. Not sure I would do the heatsink again as the pad mod worked much better.

I used the 1.5mm on my 3080Ti FE, my memory dropped 15c, but my gpu temps jumped up so I switched to 1mm the pads are too firm and doesn't compress well.

Thanks, good to know. I agree these are too firm. I started with 2mm as that's what I saw others using (different brand though) and then had to switch to 1.5, I wonder if 1mm would have worked for me also on my non ti version. If I can get my hands on a 3080ti at least I know to try 1mm first now if I use this brand again. 👍 Thanks for taking the time to comment.

@@MyRandomTechBlogwould you recommend doing the 1.5mm and 2mm on the cooler side like you mentioned 17:57? I plan on using Gelid Extremes.

Does changing thermal pads void warranty as there is no warranty sticker /seal.

I assume it does void the warranty, but I don't really know for sure. I tried using a heat sink and a fan set up first as I didn't want to risk messing up the card by opening it. Not sure what they would say if I returned it under warranty as they would be able to see different pads. If anyone see's this comment and has returned a modded card before, I would love to know if they honored the warranty still. I guess it may also depend on the brand.

why are others using 2mm on front, 3mm on back ? are you sure 1.5mm and 2mm is fine ?

My first attempt which I filmed was with 2mm and 3mm as that's what I heard people use. But they were using a different brand Gelid and they mention how soft the pads were. I think it didnt work for me as these pads must be harder. The thermalright say they are (Sc) 30-55 hardness and the Gelid says 35 and I think its shore scale (00). When I ran it with 2mm 3mm my gpu temp ran hotter than before. I think the 2mm on front was too thick for my GPU chip heatsink to firmly seat as it did not compress enough. So I swapped it with 1.5 and 2mm and it worked great. I emailed thermalright and asked which scale is used for hardness as i assumed shore 00 and they were fast to get back to me and said C. So I think the Gelid are just softer, which might have been better to use. I think softer would compress better for coverage. But they were unavailable at the time. If others used thermalright 2mm 3mm and it worked fine, then I am not sure. But if you google shore scale hardness charts it's kinda interesting. I am still happy with my temps, but if Gelid was available I would probably have gone with those assuming they are a softer pad. Hope that helps, good luck.

“Gelid extreme” pads 2mm are soft. I’ve seen many recommendations on these for the front side. Then same pad, 3mm for back side with very strong results.

Used the 2mm version on front side got worse hotspot temps. Like 105 c
