Similar story for me, first I bought Asus tuf, unacceptable levels of coil whine. No gigabytes were in stock so I tried my luck with a Galax and is dead silent in comparison so I'm sticking with it. my old 2070super from gigabyte had some coilwhine but only in menus with hundreds of frames a second.

Thank you for this video. I very appreciate the oversized coolers of this new gen because finally you can get decent temps and noise levels on air cooling, but what is the point of all this if coil whine in now louder than ever. I just returned PNY 4090 because of it. I wanted to try FE before going with Gigabyte because they finally showed up in my county, but they are already sold out haha.

ASUS GPUs typically have the loudest coil whine. HW cooling measured Gigabyte RTX 4090 Gaming OC and it had one of the least pronounced coil whine of all GPUs tested by them so far. Add frame limit, some undervolt, maybe underclock slightly, and it will get even more silent. Especially in a closed case like Nanoxia Deep Silence 8. Well done Gigabyte! This generation MSI has a bit more coil whine (was a clear winner last gen), so it's good to have an alternative.
@conradcullen8029
@conradcullen8029 Год назад
Sorry but if you buy a very expensive card you want to have full efficiency not undervolting or slowing down clocks hoping that it will resolve coil whine. Asus is making a joke with the quality of their components. Same was with motherboards z690 Hero (wrongly fitted capacitor)

@T4ish0
@T4ish0 10 месяцев назад
@@Dr.lecter33 The PCB will not break if the GPU is supported, so not an issue for me. Gigabyte uses sleeve bearings in their fans (at least anything 4070 Ti and better), that's why the fans are loud at medium to high RPM. At low RPM it's just as silent as dual-ball bearings and Gigabyte is the only company that actually lets you get to the low 600ish RPM (at least in Gaming OC/Aero). The best competition's options are 800ish.

@T4ish0 10 месяцев назад
@@Dr.lecter33 Recently I've read even more complaints about coil whine in MSI GPUs this generation, so they are definitely a no-go for me. I would go with Gigabyte Gaming OC + anti-sag support. Aero is just a white Gaming OC with a slightly different shroud look and a white color price premium. Gigabyte has fans that are louder at medium to high RPM, so undervolting and possibly a small underclock will do a lot to decrease noise levels.

Think I have had 13 4090s in my house now...lost track. Now, some will say "Mine is silent" but this is how it stands. The worst coil whine is Asus Strix and MSI Suprim X. The best is Gigabyte Gaming/Master and Zotac Extreme. One of the reasons is that the high-end cards used 70a inductors, and the others went with 50/55a. Asus knows their cards have a bad rep for it, and their 4090s are the worst offenders. With the new Matrix card due out, they even say that they have addressed coil whine with that card.

@tubelost01 The Gigabyte cards cracking was the 3090s mainly and 95% of them were in prebuilt PCs. Heavy cards travelling and getting knocked around. I have not mounted any GPU horizontal for years now, I don't trust it. The Aorus Master had a bios update and the fans are great now. Not Asus great, but much better. Not sure if the Gigabyte Gaming has had the same update yet. If you can find an Asus with a small amount of coil whine, that's the best one.....but, if you cannot, I rate the Master as the second best after the latest bios update.

It's the bios updates, not the firmware that fixed the fan issues. Master got one but not sure if Gaming had one yet. The reason Gigabyte have more is that they are used in a lot more prebuilds due to the lower cost of the Gaming card. I think FE or PNY is after that. They be more prone, but unless someone gets 4090s and tests breaking them, it would seem most of it is down to prebuilds not getting good internal packing. TBH, even then I would not trust a card that big not snapping.

Kept the right card there, regardless of coil whine - the cooling solution on the TUF sucks, it doesn't have a height adjusted baseplate for the ram and VRM's so uses thick AF heat pads, so the ram gets cooked at much higher temps than the Gigabyte. It also has a weaker power limit (520w vs the 600w on the gigabyte). Its just not a good card when compared against the Gigabyte.

Certainly in this case the gigabyte is much better. It’s a shame though as I prefer the aesthetic of the tuf

Guess I'm screwed then, the asus cards are the only ones with 2 HDMI ports :|

That was a good to have on the ASUS alright. The coil whine won’t be equal across all branded cpus so you might get one not as bad.
@-CrimsoN-
@-CrimsoN- Год назад
Why would you want 2 HDMI ports anyway? With HDMI, you're limited to 60hz on any monitor. Wouldn't you prefer to be above 60hz with a 4090?
@FPtechtalk

These are hdmi 2.1 ports. They support higher bandwidth. For example I play 120hz 4k on my lg tv with this connection.

4090 FE here with open-style case and ek sandwich waterblock. I hear plenty of coilwhine, much more than 3090 with sandwich EK block or optimus block. pretty disappointing.

Me too brother. I was wondering if it was just me. I tried the MSI Suprim and the FE 4090 both have pretty moderate coil whine. I guess we just live with it. Sucks.

@@RandomEngineer69 the fan sound is not that bad already compare to Asus tuf and strix I saw other reviews about Asus stric rtx 4080 which is 1 of their top range cards also has this coil whine noise when been push hard. what rubbish pay top dollar to get this kind fan sounds. I'm looking at this card from china with 3 Aio fan coolers quite solid though the build . Colorful iGame GeForce RTX 4080 Neptune OC-V 16GB GDDR6X

i Have no coil whine i can not even hear a card when is tdping at 480 watts.. I have asus Tuf 4090 and i had asus rog strix 4090 BOTH are oc model. And i did not bent the cable like you did.. Because i read manual ON be Quiet how to place the cable.. 4cm straight line must be before you can bent the cable.. Because of ELECTRICITY and overheat can be there when u bent under 4 cm cable to the gpu. No wonder you have loud system and coil whine.. I sold asus rog strix oc because i earnd money 575 euros because now there is no stock anymore and i buy tuf model.. FPS difference and gpu clock difference... is TUF model while gaming Hallo or cs 2 2925mhz no overclock settings default with no software added. With asus rog stric oc 2950mhz. So for 25mhz difference.. pointless.. Yes Temp is different by 4 c only. When i oc both cards.. Clock difference is TUF model 2810mhz on gaming. And asus Rog Strix oc 2850mhz.

Good to hear you had no coil whine. When I was testing with open case I tried with the cable straight, did not make a difference. In the video it has a bend as that’s how I need it with a closed case.

Coil whine is a natural phenomenon, especially noticeable with high powered, high quality devices containing a large numbers of chokes. i.e The more chokes, the higher the likelyhood of coil whine, if you want to avoid it purchase a lower powered and lower quality device!
@FPtechtalk
@FPtechtalk Год назад
You are correct it is a natural phenomenon but you should not have to accept it at levels where you can hear it during gaming. The components these companies choose will change the level of coil whine. There is night and day differences between these two cards.
@goodfodder
@goodfodder Год назад
@@FPtechtalk Glad you found a solution however it is likely to be your use case rather than a design fault of the product. Coil whine is heavily influenced by any devices connected to the same power supply i.e. how of your components sit together.
@cleverestx

@@goodfodder Doubtful in this case. I see a lot of people complaining about the TUF Asus offering vs. the Gigabyte one for this issue. Sure, some people get lucky and don't have the issue, but it seems that more people are lucky avoiding it with the Gigabyte offering in this case.
