the things that i like: -the upgradability : you can add more ram and ssd as well -the rgb effects -the keyboard shortcuts and layout -the speakers are bloody amazing -it's damn fast: it takes only less that 10 seconds to boot up -relatively good battery life for a gaming laptop ( around 4 hours) -the screen -and more... the things that i don't like so far: -the keyboard flex on the wasd side (even the keycaps doesn't sound the same) -after the bios update the fans are now louder than before. -the power brick is HUGE and very bulky.
@@Cenot4ph sorry to bother guys, I would like to ask you both the same question: how's the battery life on the legion 7 pro with i9 and 4090? I mean not gaming, using it for really light productivity, like word, excel, powerpoint, google chrome, spotify, this kind of stuff. I'm abiut to buy it but i need this key info to make the decision against the hp omen
Amazing review. I ordered mine after it being recommended to me on Reddit and watching your review. Great discounts straight from Lenovo. Keep up the good work.
Good review. I appreciate you keeping the fan noise, because it gives a realistic look at it. Amazing laptop that's currently same cost as buying desktop 4090.
I am looking into buying a 2023 model with 4090, my question is, how the hell do you cleane this one since fans are literaly integrated into vapor chamber?
12:57 I just threw a Kingston Fury Renegade 4TB in mine (Pro 7i 4080 -23). No problems. Was worried the low profile heatsink wouldn't fit with the SSD cover and the thermal pad, but it did.. Just. Left side must be used - right side only supports single sided.
I have two more videos. One is an extensive game testing video. A bunch of very demanding titles. Then the other is comparing this laptop to last years much more in depth
Thanks for the video, i was looking for what pc to it all. Also get some gaming on the side, while main purpose is for work. Your video hit everything that i was looking for to make a decision. Moving from macos and i was looking for a unit that can meet my requirements without further breaking the bank.
As someone who absolutely detested the Pro 7 when I first saw it... it is the better machine. The ONLY thing the gen 7 has on the Pro 7 is having more metal. That's it. The keyboard is better on the pro 7, as well as the RGB. While the 3080ti is a VERY capable GPU, the 4090 is just on a whole other level. After having owned both, I kept only the Pro 7i 4090. The plasticthat is there still feels premium. I will say, the Cut metal on the gen 7 was very nice but not worth keeping over then Gen 8.
I have a video coming comparing the two. I agree with nearly everything you are saying. I really like the 2023 model other the for-no-reason plastic on the back.
I've had the 4090 7i pro for a week now, Does not play audio when outputting on hdmi to a tv at 120hz.. There are loads of threads on this problem. USB audio out also randomly stutters. Spent 8 hours trying to rollback drivers, change settings. Classic example of Lenovo releasing a product and not testing it.
@kirkrutland4571 I've sent mine back to the retailer in Dubai. They are sending it away for testing. Might be a few more weeks but I'll update you on here. I could not fix the issue no matter what I explored.
@@kirkrutland4571 Best wait to see how mine turns out. If its a case of - sorry sir its just the way it is, then I hope this will save you a few thousand from making the same mistake!
Does it have mux switch feature ? How long does it take to go from %100 to %0 while unplugged? Raider has 6hours life time with battery. I am trying to decide buying either raider ge78hx 14vhg or legion pro 7 rtx4090 . What do you suggest? Should i wait for 14th gen lenovo ?
I bought this one instead of AMD version because of longer battery, faster ram and better overclock/undervolt posibilities with intel, which leads to better temps and much less noise without lossing performance using balanced mode. Did I a make a good choice? I can still cancel it
The amd model has a faster cpu, the ram is the same between them. Temps are hard to compare as amd is supposed to boost aggressively Battery life should be better on Intel When it comes down to it, just buy whichever is cheaper
No they downgraded 2023s version to accommodate the new 4000 series gpu prices. No backlit ports, plastic chassis, no logo rgb, no power button fingerprint, etc,
That's totally true. @sosuslays Meanwhile, With the 4000 series I'm able to put device to sleep when lid is down. I'm capable to watch youtube videos using both Silent and Hybrid modes (at least for now). My previous one was a pretty horrible machine. USB ports knocking out wi-fi speed. etc. "Thankfully" they replaced for a downgraded device with even less USB-C ports than previous generation. Moving backwards and calling it PRO became trendy.
Hello, I have just bought the laptop you discussed and I have a question. Do you know anything about thermal insulation? That is, is there paste or maybe liquid metal implemented on the graphics card and processor? Regards.
i have no idea how you got that laptop open so easily, mine is shut so tight i cant even put any prying tools in it. I have ordered a suction cup to literally try and pull it from the base because i couldn't get nowhere in 30 minutes trying
Hey @techguybeau if money isn't an issue, which laptop is overall best for a mix of gaming and using it as a laptop on battery? 5-6 hours of battery life is good by me. The Pro 7i or the Slim 7i?
@@TechGuyBeau I was torn between Pro 7i with 13900HX or new amd with 7945HX processor but test seems to prove amd 7945hx is a hot monster but a energy hog at idle too, twice more consomption than 13900hx in idle...is it true ? Anymay too late for me my Pro7i 13900hx and 4080m is coming next week ! 2612 € in France actually, 32 go ddr5, 1to ssd, do you think its a good deal by the way ? I think so...i hope so ^^
@@pierrotpaouf8985you made the right choice. My favourite professor is the 7840hs/7940hs. I am NOT a fan of the 7745hx or 7945hx. They are too hot In the end you made the right choice
After watching this, a stock temperature of 90°C on the CPU on heavy load sounds like needing to open it every three months to clean it out, I don't think the Intel variant seems to be an option for me. Also a sad thing that there's no AMD graphics card option (at least in my country), I was thinking of switching to linux, which would make this laptop a no go for me. Aside from that, with an AMD CPU this seems like a really good deal
I’m doubting about if I buy one with 4080 or not. Essentially, it has a discount, and in other hand there is the 9th gen that it has a 14 gen of intel. I’m not used to gaming as a couple years before, but need performance and occasionally play games(that’s why I’m looking for a gaming laptop instead of a workstation) How do you know it is easier to upgrade ram? I mean it is a standard dimm ( sorry I don’t remember when was the last time that I replaced a ram on a laptop, for sure it was 10 years ago and I remember the ram on laptops were tricky)
I'm Debating on $2599 for strix 18 2024 with 4080 I9 14th 2 tb ssd and mini led nebula display or Pro 7i 2023 for same price only plus is a 4090 what would you or anyone suggest?
They are very different machines. The Lenovo is much more premium feeling and looking, with a mix of professional and gamer focus The Asus Strix is a pure gamer laptop that in my opinion looks kind of cheap As for performance they should perform somewhat similar, Lenovo legion are known to have excellent cooling, however the strix is no slouch either If the price is considerably different get the cheaper one, if they are similar then absolutely get the Lenovo legion. There is a reason that I spend my own hard earned money on legions and not a mismatch of other brands Four aces I do like their Zephyrus G 14, Gb 15, G 16th, and their flow series quite a bit. I use an x13 as my primary mobile day today laptop exact. However it is considerably different machine altogether
Fortunately you can load of XTU and undervolt to lower temps and increase performance. I’m going a full comparison between this year and last years model. I’ll look at performance and all the design aesthetic changes
I am looking at Legion pro 7i, Asus g18, omen 17, Alienware m16, helios predator 16, for a 4080/4090 laptop and after all the research I have done over the last few hours Legion pro 7i actually runs the least hot among the 5 models I am researching. Helios predator has both CPU and GPU in mid 90s, its awful, M16 Alienware's GPU runs mid 70s but CPU touches 100 often. G18 and omen run similar with GPU in low 80s and CPU in mid-high 80s. Legion had its GPU in mid 70s and CPU in mid 80s. If anybody is looking for a 4080/4090 laptop go with either Legion or g18 or omen. I am leaning towards Legion because it had the best thermals, great build quality, and it doesn't scream that its a gaming laptop. It has many great offers going (plus I can get a student discount) ) so I might get a 4080 around $2300 or a 4090 for $2800. Just mulling if a 4090 is worth extra $500 for a 12-15% performance boost.
how big is the difference between 2k and full xd? Is there a difference in games, videos and text viewing? And how much does the graphics worsen if the game is set to full xd instead of 2k?
2k is more demanding in games. But you can always scale with dlss. A 4090 can easily handle 2k 1080 I’m not a fan of. Desktop tasks will look blurry on a larger screen like this
do you think the 4070 version runs cooler than the 4080/4090 version despite lacking of VC covering CPU and GPU? and is it true that the 4070 version has VC for the CPU only?
I’m not sure about the cooling on the 4070. Tbh non of them run hot on the gpu side. One major advantage is the lower wattage this year. My main gripe is there is a major perf boost going 4080. Personally I would recommend if you’re getting a legion seven either get this year’s 4080 or 4090 or go last year and get the 6850m xt, 6700m or 3080
@@TechGuyBeau Thank you this helps me a lot with my buying decision, also do you think the hinge of this year's modell are better and more durable or last year's modell are betterm
@TechGuyBeau will you ever test and compare the AMD version of this laptop? The AMD version with Ryzen 9 7945HX in my country with same specs and 4090 is almost 1000 € cheaper
Probably not. It wil be the same but with a faster cpu. The 13900hx is a little bit behind the 7945hx, but not enough to matter. They are basically the same laptop. Get whichever is cheaper
Hi there, i just want to get a new gaming laptop. Any recommendation on what should i buy? My budget is around 2.200 euro. I was thinking to get an ASUS ROG STRIX G16 or LENOVO LEGION 5 PRO. Any recommendation will be very helpfull ! Thanks in advance.
If you can afford it, get a 4080 or 6850m xt gpu. I don’t think getting a 4070 with 8gb vram and lower memory speeds is ideal. Any chance you can make a 4080 work?
@@TechGuyBeau Awesome to know, cuz hauling the power brick when commuting at work doesn't sound nice at all! I saw in the specs of the 140w lenovo charger was only for 220v, does it charge at 140w in 110v USA
@@HostileTerritorytough one. To me if you are already spending, and planning to keep long term, why not. There is a good boost to performance. BUT. The 4080 is no punk. It’s a behemoth itself too
@@HostileTerritory11% on average perhaps, but in some cases it can be higher (and in some lower). Overall it’s hard to say. For most people I think the 4080 is enough, realistically.
@@TechGuyBeau well...I keep seeing good deals in the states and England but I am in Germany and some of the things on sale in the UK are not even listed on the German website yet lol... and eveything is more expensive here(laptops)
Yep. Check my more recent game tests on this model, I show both performance and balanced. balanced significantly reduced noice, but since the 4090 is so powerful, the actual in game experience is near identical
@@TechGuyBeau I considered a 4090 for the sole fact of being able to get more performance out of the quieter gaming modes. Because I only play RTS games though I think the 4090 may be overkill and I could just as easily max out performance in the quite modes with the 4080
@@kanbei0412 the slim 7 from 2022 is basically the same as the 2022 legion 7. It’s slightly thinner, but the build quality is identical. I have a video a while back where I show them both. The legion 7 2022 has dual nvme, dual ram The legion 7 slim 2022 single nvme and one ram. Otherwise it comes down to thickness and the gpu inside
@@TechGuyBeau so far I have played RDR2, COD Warzone, cyberpunk, control mostly, and GPU stays within high 60s to low 70s and CPU ranges from low 70s to high 70s. But As you have mentioned maybe Last of Us is that CpU taxing… I have not tried that game.
I have this laptop, I noticed glitchy noises when I increase and decrease the volume using windows volume slider... I don't know if it's normal or it's an issue
@@TechGuyBeau I hear it only when I move the volume slider in quick settings, Not in the games, music, etc... And It's not something you can easily hear.
I just bought one, I regreted it. The keyboard is worse than the previous edition, so flexible when i press "S" button, all button around sink too !!! On my legion 5, I don't have this problem.
@@TechGuyBeau I set up mine but I think I might be missing out some features cause mine doesn't even show framerate avg or the name of graphics card. Would be sick if you could show or teach me how you did yours. If you can't do it, I understand it's fine.
@@randomstuff_21 Yeah, it gets really warm, but I haven't had any problems of it. Still I am worried that it will damage the laptop, so I ordered the llano cooling pad v12 today. What coolingpad do you have?
Just as loud as mine. I've always hated gamer logic. "Just put on headphones!" Idiots online also blindly believe vapor chamber=superior thermals. Idiots don't realize it's just another type of heatpipe, and you ultimately still need to blow the heat away, and small fans mean loud laptop. Thicker laptops don't benefit much from vapor chamber as there is diminishing returns whereas the regular heatpipes become better as they get thicker. That's why vapor chamber is great for thin and light laptops or smartphones but not so much roomier laptops. Gaming laptops don't have to be loud, and not everyone has to play on full blast at max speed, but Lenovo didn't pay heed to such basic logic. The fan profiles are borked and you can't adjust fan speeds slower, even though there is plenty of thermal headroom. Apparently they try to pander to your tech enthusiast side with specs and the illusion of control but ultimately treat you like a dumb child who can't make their own performance adjustments. On the lowest fan profile which is the only decent sounding one the temps drop to the 50s...BUT they kill the power so much it performs like a 4060. So WTF am I doing with 30C worth of extra thermal headroom? The card doesn't throttle until 87C and they are designed to work at these high temps with no issues. Yet Lenovo in their infinite wisdom thinks it's okay to have 80C temps in high performance jet engine fan mode but dear god the same temps at lower fan speed is DANGEROUS! Could have easily gotten 90% the performance at much quieter fans, if Lenovo wasn't so asinine. The low contrast washed out condom covered screen is also trash tier. Ditto the speakers. And yes I returned that screamer straight away. At least there's one other person who isn't paid to gush about the $400 laptop keyboard. It may be shaped like a thinkpad but it's a fraud.
i got the 2022 3080ti 7i instead of the 2023 4090 because i felt that the quality of the underchassis and accents were a bit "gamey" for my liking. 2022 had a more minimalist design to pack serious power under the hood without making it look like a gamers laptop. With the 2022 3080ti, you could literally bring this into your board room and conduct staff meetings with no one noticing that it's a gamer focused laptop. since i crunch numbers on the numpad, i chose this laptop vs all the other competitors out there. There are others in the market which beat this laptop but for mixed professional and gaming use, this is almost like a well balanced touring car in terms of appeal and performance
The chassis of the 2022 7 and 7i are better for sure . I had the 2022 7 amd. The speakers are better on the 2023 but that’s about it (outside of obviously better specs). I think a lot of people should eye the 2022 models if they can find it. Hell lenovo still has them on their site
I'm not sure about wired but wireless VR is not great on it using Virtual Desktop and Quest 2. Ethernet from laptop to dedicated VR router and Quest 2 to dedicated router. I get too many lag spikes and it messes with the experience. I use the same dedicated router to connect to my desktop PC with 4090+13900k and it had no such issues. It's only the laptop. Might be the realtek Ethernet, might be something else, don't know.
@@rayw8252 Thank you. I was using an Asus F15 laptop (3060 RTX) with virtual desktop just for Flight simulator 2020. Since my original question I decided moving towards a desktop PC with a 4090 RTX OC.
I wonder why they decided to put there this ugly plastic thing around ... aha, now I know. They want to put it on the "lower" shelf compared to the Legion Pro 9i ... where you can upgrade the SSDs and WiFi easily, while the RAM slots are from the other side of the motherboard - which is very very bad :-) so I would really prefer to buy this 7i.
