The volcanic eruption of the Ruang volcano was highly destructive. Yet, due to its unexpectedness, it left many people wanting answers. In today's video, I will answer several of these questions about the Ruang volcano as a geologist and volcanologist. Topics include whether Ruang and Tagulandang Islands might connect, how much ash was ejected in terms of Olympic swimming pool volumes, and whether Ruang could produce an 1883 Krakatau-like caldera forming eruption.

The bigger question: how many people are actually familiar with the size of an Olympic swimming pool?

Yeah those comparisons never helped me because I've seen an Olympic sized swimming pool. lol

164 feet long, how wide it is depends on how many lanes. It's actually very variable because the term means any pool in which a oylmpic style swiming event is held.

I loved the wording of the "American units" question and I especially loved the answer. The world could be crumbling around us, but at least we can poke a little fun at ourselves and get a few smiles out of people. I appreciated the light heartedness anyway. Please stay safe everyone - regardless of your proximity to a volcano. You all deserve to be safe.

Around 900 local residents in Ruang Island are being relocated to a new location, and their new homes will be built with the help of government and military. But not every local agrees with this decision and chooses to stay in the Ruang island.

I really like the 'sidebars' of extra info printed on screen to be paused and read by those who are interested. As someone who gets in trouble at times for being too verbose due to providing just such sidebars of expanded explanation about things, I appreciate the solution.

How would geologists and other scientists determine if Ruang and the neighboring islands are part of a caldera? What sort of tests could be done, or what sort of data is to be collected to puzzle it out? Thank you!
@ikbalikbal769
@ikbalikbal769 20 дней назад
As far as I know, there are several ways to find out. 1. Due to its location in the middle of the ocean, a bathymetric image of the seabed is needed to find out whether there is a caldera at the bottom of the sea.2. Using seismic reflection waves to determine the existence of the magma chamber and its structure. Is there a large magma chamber that connects the 3 islands?3. Excavate layers of rock or soil to look for layers of material from large eruptions in the past, especially the ignimbrite layer. If later found, The age of the ignimbrite was determined and matched with the chemical structure of the material from the Ruang volcano eruption.

Just use 110 cubic meters as the measurement instead of swimming pools since the 14.5m long intermodal bins used internationally are 6697728 cubic inches in volume by external measurements. They're literally an international standard created by the US that everybody uses. (109756 liters) and people can go look at huge stacks of them easily.
