Ruang Volcano Eruption Update; Estimating the Eruption's Size

Between April 16th & April 30th, the Ruang volcano produced a destructive eruption which was larger than the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens. Yet, how exactly did I estimate that 1.40 cubic kilometers of tephra was ejected? In this video I will answer that question and discuss how the amount of magma which feeds an eruption does not have the same volume as the tephra it ejects.

Looks like Indonesia Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry's Geology Agency has some good seismic monitoring in the area of the potential caldera but I can't find it online. For example they said they detected seismic activity at both Mount Awu and Mount Karangetang. Combined with the underwater eruption and Ruang this seems pretty clear evidence of caldera restlessness. Meanwhile Indonesia experts are talking about starting a special study about the "interconnectedness" of the adjacent systems. Gov studies might take long than the caldera has left.

I am increasingly inclined to believe, based on both the established & the new/incoming evidence, that Ruang is, indeed sitting atop a major magma pool/chamber, and that it is, moreover, within a very large caldera. Time & activity, or lack thereof will validate or invalidate such inclinations. Stay safe!

In the recent Ruang video of yours, as well as in a prior one, you briefly addressed the potential correlation between a submarine volcano and Ruang, highlighting the possibility of a tsunami originating from the northern section of Ruang due to a shared magma chamber.. My inquiry stems from a genuine curiosity regarding the number of submarine volcanoes present in Indonesia and their respective levels of hazard potential. Given the dearth of scientific research and media coverage on this topic, I am particularly keen to discern the likelihood of a tsunami originating from these submarine volcanic sources surpassing the 50% threshold..? Your insights on this matter would be immensely appreciated, as they contribute to a deeper understanding of the geological dynamics at play in Indonesia, thank you so much:].. Im sitting here with a specimen from the Sterling Mine in New Jersey (usa) its a white rock of calcite that is speckled with small black crystals of franklinite and yellowish spots of willemite. In uv light the calcite glows pink with a brief phosphorescent afterglow and the willemite glows bright green while the franklinite stays black. I wonder what are the conditions that led to the formation of something like this? So what's the generalized formula for the relation between ash and dense rock? I am assuming the constants are different depending on the composition.
@bitey-facepuppyguy2038
@bitey-facepuppyguy2038 21 день назад
It depends on a lot of things such as vesicularity (buble content), grain size and shape, crystal content, sorting and packing. Well sorted, course fall deposits of frothy, silicic pumice gravel having low crystal content can be as light as 300-400 kg/m^3 ...compared to solid obsidian glass having 2,400 kg/cubic metre for a ratio of 6-8 to 1. Poorly sorted and poorly vesicular block and ash flow deposits can be as dense as ~1500-1800 kg/m^3 compared to dense, crystal rich andesite rock having say 2,600 kg/m^3 .......for a ratio as low as 1.4-1.7 to 1. I have not seen a generalized formula, but a "global average" of loose fragments to equivalent mass of solid rock might be about 2.5.
@AlexGNR

This comment might not make much sense as you probably have already looked into it as you are a professional geologist and I am but a mere physics major student. Have you considered looking into the TROPOMI data of the SO2 plume from the most recent Ruang eruption? It probably should have a lot of useable data for the size estimation of said eruption. Speaking off. How is it possible for the second eruption to be bigger than the first when an already quite large Plinian eruption has occured prior to it? Would this not have relieved a lot of pressure, or at least, enough to cause lesser volume for the second eruption (in theory)? Considering we are speaking about materials the stress put unto the lava dome is equal to the force over the area it occupies. (pi times radius of the dome squared). This force is in turn defined by the density of the magma multiplied by the volume of the "cylinder" of rising magma multiplied by the propagation rate it is going upward. Hopefully you have some answers to the questions. :)

I have a question - here you added up the different events on April 16 and April 30 as the same eruption to give your eruption size. At what point are such events considered the same eruption, versus two different closely spaced eruptions?

In a country that is entirely composed of volcano islands, it's folly to think you can evacuate and relocate every citizen at risk. When the landscape recovers, certainly people should be allowed to reinhabit the island.

Alas, no, not perceptibly. The effects of even the most extreme volcanic eruptions on the climate generally dissipate within a year or two, and this eruption is much smaller.

So if Ruang is possibly part of that caldera could it actually be a super volcano in the ancient past?
@timothyjones7067
@timothyjones7067 21 день назад
Highly unlikely as there is no evidence of such an eruption taken place in that region. I believe there are at least two caldera complexes and Ruang is the newest vent of that complex, very similar to Krakatoa.
@nils-erikolsson3539
@nils-erikolsson3539 21 день назад
Something is really sqewed with the way geologists and/or volcanists talk about volcanos. Its not the Volcano that "sits" on Ruang island. Its the island that sits on the volcano.
