Ruang Volcano Eruption Update; Possible Underwater Explosion as Tsunami Source

During the Ruang volcano's climactic and destructive eruption on April 30th, a small tsunami was detected by an ocean buoy nearly 100 miles away. At first, it was assumed that this was generated by a pyroclastic flow entering the ocean, but further analysis seems this to have not occurred when the tsunami was generated. Instead, after discussions with several locals, I hypothesize that Ruang's underwater vent may have reactivated and produced a loud explosion more than two hours before its plinian eruption began. And this is what I hypothesize generated the tsunami during the volcanic eruption of Indonesia's Ruang volcano.

Note: This video's thumbnail image does not actually display Ruang's underwater vent. Instead, it merely represents what an explosion from it may have looked like early on April 30th, 2024.

I'm not sure if "dramatic" is the right word, but this same thing made me kinda' immediately stop watching the Fallout show. Why? Because the opening scene got almost EVERYTHING wrong about nuclear explosions. Nukes are TERRIFYING and _insanely destructive_ in real life. Even pelting a city with Davy Crocketts would be WAY more impressive and terrifying than the scene in the show. Their "nukes" looked more like freaking Hollywood petrol-driven fireballs roughly in the shape of TINY mushroom clouds, not actual weapons of war... It was quite impressive in how _weak_ they made nukes look...

@@ashkebora7262Dante's Peak was one of the few movies that made volcanic explosions look correct. Fallout, Oppenheimer and everything else out there other than Terminator 2 failed with nuclear explosions. In both cases, the mushroom cloud should look like a gigantic, dynamic roiling mass. Fallout made it worse by superimposing a mushroom cloud on a city block with no other damage. T2 got the heat pulse and shock wave correct.

Man, I don't want to be alarmist, but this really seems to be paralleling Krakatau; there's multiple erupting vents on a pretty active subduction volcano, with one underwater in this case, and both being part of what seems to be an old caldera system. Is there potentially a hidden fissure/trend of volcanism like with Krakatau? Or perhaps could the potential caldera ring fault act like this? Of course as always the chances for something big are minuscule, but this system _does_ seem to have all the ingredients to do a similar style of eruption.
@MrPeabody67
@MrPeabody67 Месяц назад
I agree wholeheartedly. I'd do some sea floor sampling outside the hypothetical rim of the caldera to see if there's any evidence of a prior krakatoa-esque eruption.

Maybe not related, Mt Awu in Sangihe island and Karangetang in Siau Island are now level 3. Maybe they are on the same lava fault ? I hope they are not related, all three erupting will be a bad thing because they are on the remote area of Indonesia so resources to help is limited.

@Dragrath1
@Dragrath1 Месяц назад
@@Z_The_Editor They probably aren't directly related however activity along subduction zones does seem to wain and wax over time likely due to changes/dynamics in the slab configuration affecting melt generation. It may be that this section of subducting crust has entered an interval of higher than typical melt generation triggering rejuvenation and or convective mixing which seem to be associated with inducing major volcanic eruptions. In essence most volcanoes seem to have a series of heterogenous complex magma reservoirs which accumulate slowly before two or more such chemically melt bodies come into contact or an existing mature melt body is intruded by fresh hot material allowing the release of chemical energy from latent heat to reawaken/remobilize a large amount of melt material on a short enough timescale for weaker activity to be insufficient to release the building pressure. VEI 3+ eruptions at the very least seem to involve such interactions based on their ash and lava chemistry with more such vigorous reactions leading to bigger eruptions fueled by larger changes in the underlying system of magmatic plumbing of a given volcanic complex.

So my question is do they take the wind speed the humidity the barometric pressure and the air temperature over the ocean as to measure how long it took for that sound to be heard to figure out what time it was that the volcano originally erupted?

It probably did not produce enough SO2 which in huge quantities can lead to a global cooling as the Pinatubo did in 1991. That eruption ejected 12 million tons of SO2 and yet only led to temporary cooling of 1 ° F for year. Ruang produced less than a quarter as much SO2.

No in short. It could have a tiny effect but nothing anyone will feel

If that magma chamber empties out all the way, much of the island could be destroyed. Then the big tsunamis could happen. Could be another Krakatoa 1883 in the making.

The scariest possibility is an earthquake creating a Crack where seawater can rush in to a magma chamber creating a steam flash thus super eruption. I might be wrong but I think that may have been what kraketoa did . I am hoping for more earth cooling sulfur dioxide though...

If Ruang were to do a VEI 6, which isn't unlikely in the near future, I hope it won't turn into the world's next mega-crisis (Krakatau-esque or Tambora-esque global cooling), what with Covid, the Ukraine war, the Israel-Hamas war, etc. we've experienced worldwide in the last few years.

Your video's are great, right up until you do all that scare mongering. Unless you have been officially asked by the Indonesian Government to provide advice, you should really just keep the advice out of your video's and just talk about the eruption as you do usually do so well.

No scare mongering here and governments don't have monopoly on warnings or suggestions. Governments have proven time and time again that they only really care about their own power. Keeping it and expanding it. People have a right to know so they can make up their own mind
