Rubbermaid Stock Tank Drain Valve Installation
raisingquail.net/
I'm installing a 100 gallon stock tank as part of an aquaponics system and thought I'd share how I am installing a valve to easily drain the tank.
The reducer is 1-1/4 inch by 3/4 inch which allows you to screw it into the bulkhead, then attach a standard 3/4 inch garden hose type of valve on there.

I want to share how I solved the slow leak on my new Rubbermaid 100 gal stock tank. As others have noted, the seal is achieved by the gasket and not the threads. All that was needed was to tighten the bulkhead nut a lot (obviously not to the point of cracking) using channellock pliers. No sealant/chemicals/tape required.

Great video! I am going to put my tank on some concrete blocks or used 4X4 sections to raise it off the ground for ease of screwing the hose on. Thanks again.

no need for tape except the plug . The gasket & nut do the sealing

Look at any number of other videos on why their tank is leaking and you will see why you need to tape the plug as well
@brandon4601
@brandon4601 Год назад
@@williamforsythe5850 yes the plug, not the bulkhead fitting itself. The gasket on the back side and the nut on the outside sandwich the tank and do the sealing. My tank didn’t come with a plug but instead came with a cap that used the outside threads and had its own gasket.

I'am going to use the drain on mine, for a filter pump > its 1.5 outlet. So 1.5 nipple down to 1.25 hose out let EASY AS PIE, Then take the inlet hose just throw it over the top down into the tanks i can use plastic ties to hold the inlet hose in place. Love the holes around the top to

Adding thread tape to the bulk head will have little affect. The gasket is the seal. The reducer is tapered threads as is the bib they need the tape

I know it's been a long time but do you remember where you got the reducer? I've got a 300 gallon sitting here that I'm dying to get my fish into and none of my local hardware stores have anything in 1 1/4 ... even amazon has failed me, they've got one but it's on back order for at least another week.

The bulkhead threads are tapered according to rubbermaid. Not sure if this will end up leaking or not. Maybe you can update us on that?

The drain is 1 1/2", how does a 1 1/4 reducer fit, is that how it works, I'm so confused.

it looks like the inside gasket makes up 100% of the seal, not the threads. the threads should be dry if gasket is compressed enough. the threads on the plug serve a different purpose. they get wet and do need sealant.

I love my Rubbermaid 100 gal stock tank. When you buy your new stock tank! MAKE SURE THE DRAIN VALVE is tighten. You need some big Channel locks. To tighten the nut. on the stock tank, NOT THE DRAIN PLUG! The tanks drain adapter OK Mine was loose. but it never did leak, I just took my finger to see if it was tight? and it was NOT! I would never known this? if i wasn't putting a filter pump on the drain

Thanks for posting. What size of channel locks did you use to tighten the bulkhead? I might have messed up my bulkhead with some undersized channel locks.

i'm having to do this very thing. i was thinking of using a uni-seal instead of a bulkhead, then having pvc pipe coming out to hit a true union ball valve. i'm not sure which one is the best, no fail option. bulkhead vs uni seal)

Can some one help me out? I did the same exact set up with the same parts but when I open the valve with the hose attached, nothing happens. The water doesn’t drain out at all. Do I need a special hose? Or to elevate the tank?

Putting thread tape on those threads is not going to do a thing. The gasket is the only seal that the bulkhead fitting has., The reducer and valve threads needs thread tape.

pvc you dont need thread tape they reconmend using pipe thread sealant.pvc doesnt need the teflon since its slick enough.you need the pipe sealent to fill the gap.broke 2 bulkheads because of this.

Indeed it is a Spirko set up. I'm starting with ebb and flow. I got 2 of the 21 gallon concrete mixing trays to start. I'm at 9,000 feet elevation and tired of trying to grow stuff in the 3 weeks of summer we have here, LOL. Hopefully this will make growing some veggies a bit easier.

Have You heard of Geo Air Green house by LDS Prepper David Gilmore ? LDS prepper on You tube Pumping air through flexable PVC drain pip buryed below the Frost line where The Temp is alway 54 °F the air is moved by a small fan that pull the air through the underground tubing that would help heat a green house and extend what growing season you have
@raisingquail1100
@raisingquail1100 6 лет назад
I haven't heard of him, but have heard of similar systems. Interesting stuff for a greenhouse or even a whole home for heating or cooling if you're a warmer climate.
