I always thought John's eccentric style of presenting was great but at the end of the day no one makes us punters go out and place a bet if we win it's great if we lose tough luck
Last time I checked 2% of all bets placed in Ireland in shops and online go the exchequer. The state’s contribution to racing in 2020 was just over €67 million. Betting pays for a lot in racing.
Absolutely love Ruby, no greater expert over jumps,but he's deluding himself to think the industry would exist without punters, whether their money goes back into racing or not.
99 percent of race course goers know nothing about horse racing or mathematics/odds. Nothing. Wouldn't make the slightest difference to them if they were watching camels ridden by monkeys.
I've never known anybody to actually give a crap about what a jockey/player/contestant etc thinks of them when they're putting a bet on. Who the fuck backs people to be their mate! 😂

Listen to the question the presenter asked ruby Walsh if he felt felt responsible for the punters and that they owned him ruby answered the question honestly his responsibility is to the owners and trainer's the people who provide his bread and butter and pay his mortgage none of them force us to go out place a bet on a horse so why should they feel responsible for us do publicans feel responsible for us when they sell us alcohol. I couldn't care less about a jockey whose horse I bet on feeling responsible for me why should they I'm an adult perfectly capable of been responsible for my own decisions. I help out at our local point to point and theirs no nicer people than the racing people trainers jockies and grooms and gave Ted Walsh a hand to unload a horse one time and he had no airs and Grace's what so ever. I've also seen race goers crying about horses been put down and not giving a damn about seriously injured jockies in fact a friend of mine who works on the track for the main races told me that their was a horse and jockey injured and everyone was going ah the poor horse and he said what about the jockey and someone just said ah he broke his leg so we can't be whinging about jockies not caring about us when we don't care about them.
I don't think he meant it like that - He as a jockey has to worry about performing for his horses trainers/owners as that's where he earns his money - The transactions between the bookies/punters is completely separate - He see's no money from that so isn't responsible but that isn't to say he doesn't respect punters & want to try & win for them if he can. Of course there's no horse racing without people watching, but Ruby has to be worried about doing the best for the people employing him directly.
he fell twice on the last fence on footpad and saldier today, in back to back races where he was odds on favourite. the man is a disgrace, i stop backing any horse he rides from last year
@@mikiy84 According to Mick Fitzgerald who was a fine jockey when u approach the last clear u don't move Ruby used to throw tired horses at the last therefore falling at the last more than most. That said he was still a great jockey.
@@bazglsgw1208 I dont doubt his achievements or the fact that he is a great jockey and perhaps I was a bit harsh on him. When he was a jockey, he was very arrogant, but he is more chilled out now as a pundit. It was also very nice to see what Ap and Ruby did for Pat Smullen.
Ruby is wrong as john said it's the gamblers who pay the jockeys salerys without them there would be no need for all the racecourses stables etc...... here's an example if everyone worked there would be no job centre it's all about what is needed and if there's no interest or money going in to horse racing then there's no jobs as john said it would be a hobbey on private estates
Why should he have to though we go out and place a bet on a horse of our own free will we know the risks and we still take them what's to stand up for if you don't like the Irish or British bookies system nothing is stopping you not placing a bet with them
Exactly. He drew people into racing and there'll never be a character like him. Matt Chapman (who I think John called the Swami) comes close but nobody can be as good as Big Mac.
McRirrick is right about irish bookmakers though !! Boyles and paddys offer brutal prices , its clear for all to see if you download an oddschecker app and search any race whatsoever and guaranteed boyles have the shortest odds for horses among all bookmakers its a fuckin joke
Not a huge fan of JM, but when he was on TV, he was always for the punter, and the point he makes about the Irish bookmakers being 'Rip off Merchants' is totally right. I used to really love the Irish racing, but now the likes of Gigginstown and Rich Ricci have got involved, anything they put out trained by Willie Mullins or Gordon Elliott, instantly goes odds on. The smaller trainers in Ireland don't stand a chance, it's sent the likes of trainers Colm Murphy into forced retirement.
No punters equals no crowds, which means no events being held, therefore no racing, and no day job for Ruby Walsh. He tried to be slick by keeping the argument with Irish racing, but I'm pretty sure most of Ruby's success happened in England. Purposeful self delusion and arrogance...
john was right there btw....odds are terrible and for ruby to say he has no interest for the punter is absolutly disgraceful,he should be trying for the trainer and the punters..iv lost alot of bets on jokeys that didnt try...disgraceful
i seen this guy deliberatly lose a race!!it was fixed without doubt.And the horse was odds on aswell.He made so obvious i surprised there was nothing done about it cos others seen it too.
As far as i am concerned i support John. Ruby tried to be a smart arse and John put him right in his place. McCririck and the like are unfortunately a dying breed who actually say what is on their mind. Too bad the next generation of Brits on the TV are/will be a bunch of yes men/ladies ..John isn't that and never would be. A lot of owners are punters too , love him and the old man but honestly punting is how owners sometimes get involved in racing, not always ,but a lot of the time it’s kind of a silly thing to say even if he means it ! For years owners have backed their own horses winning and loosing but the public’s money definitely help the payout s and bookies laying off bets I presume 🙄
Lost a lot of respect for Mr Walsh. Without spectators / punters there would be no horse racing. He has done very well from Horse Racing. Without punters what we he be doing for a living? Get Real , even for an Irishman that's a bit a bit thick !!

But we're fickle ruby's gone now and do any of us care, if he had been unlucky enough to get a career finishing injury we'd be off the next race looking for another jockey to bet on and very soon we'd have forgotten about ruby and well he knows it. We love our sporting heroes because they get the results no other reason how many of us give the ordanry jobber jockies and footballers who go to a race track to ride one or two horses or go to middling football clubs and can bearly make a living out of their trade that their passionate about and even end up broken by it a second thought. Of course Ruby would not have this job if people did not bet on horses. Don´t know how much money from bettings go to prize money. But certainly this attracts sponsors etc. where trainers and jockey benefit from. But Ruby is also right that he really does not have to care about the punters. All he cares for is the trainer, the staff, the horse and himself. He wants to win, he wants the trainer to win so eventually he indirectly cares about the punter too, unless they put a lay bet on the horse he is riding.
If you come over to kempton on chase day, I want to have a discussion with you... why do you say all this... do you even know there are thousands of people who'd put their last 10 pounds on your horse, hoping you gonna get them out of trouble... not everyone is rich and arrogant and you should respect everyone

McCririck talks through his backside most of the time... He was clearly trying to get a reaction from Ruby here. I think Ruby was right in most of what he said. The majority of punters, myself included will go to the bookies to have a bet & that goes into their purse, not racings. He may come across as a bit cold, but he's trying to be honest.
Mac is commercially patronising the mug punters with his juvenile verbiage and soppy visage. A jockey is not answerable to the public at all. Their job is to get the best out of the cattle they ride. If a 1/10 favourite is hurting in a race the jockey will look after the horse first, not ruin him and pull up even if the horse may have braved it out. There's always another day. Mac, when you are ill you take a day off and although 'disappointing your adoring fans there's always next Saturday.
Ruby is so wrong, without betting on races, most punters wouldn’t watch racing. It’s the punters watching racing that allow those involved in it to make money through advertising and subsequently large sponsorships for big meetings and races.
Well he wouldn't have any regard for punters when he works for paddy power would he.owners,trainers and jockeys are best mates with all bookmakers.Thats where the bookmakers get the information on which horse is going to win.The public don't get this information though.thats why they don't stand a chance with this corruption.
A lot of jockey really don't care of the betting public, when they find it's tough making a living as a rider they start to gamble,these jockey who gets a lot of good mount and contracts Don t really care about placing, many I see can't win but they rather fall or misuse there horse trying to win when they could have easily place,this industry is for the rich and for their entertainment...........
I have spent a fair bit of my 8 decades of life overseas, but always maintained a wee bit of interest in racing (mainly over jumps) and had heard of Ruby Walsh. This McCririck bloke is obviously what I would have known years ago as a "Poncer". Look at the stupid things he has adorning his finger, that daft hat and general weirdness. Who is he and what has he ever done? He is totally wrong about those who bet having any sort of hold over jockeys, horses, owners, trainers. Racing has always happened without any third party being involved, and always will. I have paricipated in the occasional race (not under rules) as an owner and rider, and as far as I know, nobody other than the owners placed a bet on the horses involved.

Bookmakers are the greediest people on the planet. Basically their "job", is to sit on their holes and collect money. Their profits should be scrutinised and cut by at least half, and taken from them via tax or money to the horse racing industry, or to help people with mental illness eg addictions.

+Magner45 I tell you one thing if Willie Mullins doesn't get a new head Stable jockey it won't be long before his business goes down the swanny,it's almost a certainty for Ruby to fall at the last fence or hurdle,or make a boo-boo, how many times has he done it before, look at the king George where Paddy Brennan really put him in his place while on Cue Card , Ruby had the race at his mercy and lost it because of a bad jump, it's happened moretimes than I can remember , a good jockey does not make mistakes (period). Ruby Walsh is a punk who got lucky , he is a little bollix with the charisma of a wet paper bag. Looking at him riding a horse is like watching paint dry through a letterbox
