I read that in the original airing, Santa did not go to the Island of Misfit Toys and rescue the inhabitants. The new ending was added after a letter-writing campaign. This would explain the difference in the credits. I never knew this, and I saw "Rudolph" the first year it was on, when I was nine years old.
@@tylermannor4290 You mean like the boy elf killed the swimming bird sounded like a boy elf throwing a present on the Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer Credits the 1st time in 1968 on CBS and NBC?
regarding comments as to why the original credits are b/w, the short answer most likely is KINESCOPE which was a black and white film copy that was made when the special was originally broadcast. From the dawn of TV into the early 70s, a Kinescope filmed copy was made for later broadcast on the west coast. Once videotape became common, the networks no longer made a kinescope copy.
You mean like the boy elf grabbed the spotted elephant out of Santa's bag, swimming bird flies down before the boy elf waves goodbye to him, boy elf grabbed the choo-choo with squared wheels on the caboose out of Santa's bag, and the boy elf grabbed the cowboy that rides an ostrich out of Santa's bag sounded like the boy elf throwing presents on the Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer Credits on NBC from 1968-1987 just like on CBS?
Imagine if they used the original 1964 credits with the scene where Santa picks up the toys. They should've extend the scene. After Santa landed. He would get out of the sleigh and put the misfit toys in present boxes which would show the credits that the elf showed to the camera/viewers and dropped.
I don't know why when they remastered it and re-added scenes from the original version why they didn't just use the audio track from the revised version for the end credits - the sfx don't sync up with the refilmed ending.
With the exception of keeping the 1965 ending and credits, they were trying to restore the film to the way it was originally broadcast back in 1964. So i guess they wanted to use the original audio
@@superjackster0165 Hey! I know? What if the boy elf grabbed the spotted elephant out of Santa's bag, swimming bird flying down before the boy elf waves goodbye to him, boy elf grabbed the choo-choo with square wheels on the caboose out of Santa's bag, and the boy elf grabbed the cowboy that rides an ostrich out of Santa's bag sounded like a boy elf throwing presents on the Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer Credits right now on CBS and NBC in 1968 and on Golden Books Family Entertainment DVD by Sony Wonder in 1998? All it needs is the boy elves playing the band in We are Santa's Elves, Hermey and Rudolph singing We're a Couple of Misfits, and Cornelius knocks over Hermey on the snow for a peppermint mine with these Misfit Toys being upset that Christmas is going to be cancelled because of the storm was too much for them!
It would be cool to see somebody colorize this ending just so that we have some sort of color version. As for the boxes, I would just make them a whiteish-brown color, with the riboons being whatever colors you want. I would do it myself, but I don't know how to colorize.
You mean like the boy elf is throwing presents out of Santa's bag where Santa didn't go to the Island of Misfit Toys because of the storm re-aired on NBC in 1965?
Is anybody wondering why the original broadcast appears here in black and white? Although it was taped in color, color TV was still a brand new thing in 1964, so practically nobody owned a color TV set yet (Hey, that rhymes!). Just because color TV was introduced doesn't mean people immediately went out and replaced their black and white TV with a color one. They probably waited until their black and white TV broke before they bought a color TV.
The special was FILMED in color, not 'taped'. The left image is from a 16 millimeter network film print struck as a back up for time shifting purposes.

Rudolph did not go back and rescue the misfit toys in the original broadcast so several children started a letter writing campaign. Then the following year in 1965 they added a new scene where Rudolph revisits the island and rescues the misfit toys. They changed the credits to the elf delivering the toys and that's the version that's been airing ever since
@@frankz3595 When the original 1964 ending was re-airing on NBC in 1965 and the 1965 ending was re-airing on CBS in 1973, it's the original 1964 audio on the 1965 ending!
