With the latest season of Bob's Burgers underway, one of it's newest episodes focused on an unassuming character in Regular Sized Rudy. I wanted to go over how this episode handled giving Rudy his own outing. I feel it may hold as one of the best Bob's Burger episode. #bobsburgers #foxanimation #louisebelcher

What were some of your favorite moments with Regular Sized Rudy?

Love me some Rudy so it's hard to think of favorites, but him wheezing "I'm loving every minute of this!" in his first episode will never not have me on the floor 💀 I generally stan this regular sized, self-aware, sweetie pie king.

i was just watching the episode where chloe barbash didn't want to give rudy his first kiss and you can just tell how much she cares about him and how protective she is of him, it's very sweet cause she really doesn't care about many people outside of her family.

One little detail I love is how Gene gives Rudy his seat and sits on the extra chair instead. No one tells him to do it, no one brings attention to it, but it helps show how the Belchers treat Rudy like he's part of the family. He felt more like a guest at the restaurant than his parents than as an actual guest in the Belcher household.

As a kid of divorce who had to see my younger brothers deal with the hardest parts, this episode was so on point. I've also often looked at the Belcher kids and their relationship with their parents with silent envy, like "it'd be cool if my family could have been the same", and Rudy doing the same in this episode looking at the 3 of them was validating as hell.
@lainey6474
@lainey6474 8 месяцев назад
What I loved so much about this, was that it didn't paint either parent in a negative light. For a kid of divorce, if you're trying to explain to your parents how it's affecting you, they tend to take it as if it's something they or the other parent are doing wrong which makes you feel guilty for even saying anything in the first place. It felt so good to see that even though the parents are divorced, there's no blame game or finger pointing.

I teared up at this episode because as a kid and an adult I get very anxious and it’s hard to explain what’s wrong. But when Louise just was there for Rudy and she didn’t have to say anything made me happy. I also loved the silent moments with just the music and it was very well done.

Having the focus on Rudy is such a great way for them to show the work they’ve put in to invest us in the supporting cast of the show. Rudy is someone we all like to see in an episode and giving him a chance to shine in a way that cuts deep with his parents was beautiful. I also really love what they’re doing with Louise recently and showing that softer side she has. Rudy has become one of her chosen few over the seasons and you can see the genuine care she shows for him the same way she would Tina or Gene.

i loved this episode!! it captures so well the way a child holds big feelings and is aware of adult things in their own way. as you said, Rudy is so sweet. it’s a beautiful defining strength of his character. the structure of the episode, especially the montage work well, showing how he continuously tries to take the pressure off of his parents throughout their stages of divorce and moving on to new partners. how that affects everyone in the family. how he sees himself as a connecting piece, holding them together through laughter and magic. and how seriously he takes this role to heart omg! all accentuated at the present day dinner by the closeups and medium shots focused on this small, regular-sized boy, where the adults are just midsections or parts of their heads are cutoff to frame him as the focus. then the heartbreak of his failed trick, that does the opposite of bring levity to the difficult situation. so he leaves one upsetting family dinner and ends up at a weird and exciting one. i appreciated the real and absurd way they showed that sometimes you have the hardest moments of your life and the world feels like it’s ending for you, but all around you it keeps going. i love how they expanded on Rudy’s iconic love of hats and magic and putting on a show. they really let him shine 💗 thanks Mann for making this video, i didn’t even realize how much i love Rudy

I used to watch the show to bond with my father as a teenager (along with Seinfeld; truly a great inter-generational conversation), but sort fell off of it after a while for no particular reason. I still love it - even in its more typical goofy episodes, it always had a heart and sense of optimism to it that a lot of other "adult" cartoons lacked. Now, seeing all of the commotion about the Rudy episode, I think I've definitely got to get back into it. Even if this is the only somber episode of the season, or they just have a handful more, I think it's commendable seeing Bob's Burgers taking heavier stories in stride, as they have already done in the past.

@scarysara9364 I don't like him because of how he just lets his friends treat Tina like crap. Dude always has Jimmy Jr's back but rarely Tina's. He also sides with Tammy a majority of time in most situations. Also that Mad Pooper stunt he did almost got Tina expelled and Louise was the one who actually helped clear Tina's name in that. The water balloon thing was just Zeke trying to get on Tina's good side so he wouldn't get hit. It also proved that he knew about Jimmy Jr treating Tina like crap and how he didn't care about it unless it was convenient for him. He's still better than Jimmy Jr but that's not saying much.

Seeing amicable divorce in modern toons is a nice step forward. My earliest memory of seeing divorce depicted in a cartoon was blond chicks family in the Winx club and they went full on with torturing this girl with the parents detesting each other, the scene I remember was from one episode where blond fairy nearly got killed by a villain, she’s reunited with her parents and 2 seconds after they started fighting and the dad kicked the mom out and she leaves without saying goodbye to blond fairy and moving on from her being the focus very quickly. I mean you don’t expect amazing writing from the Winx club but Jesus, you make it they can’t be in the same room for 10 minutes?

this episode did make me cry as a kid of divorced parents (and an absent father). I also love Louise's character progression and found the end of the episode cute as hell but i hope the show doesn't try to push them together as a couple.

Idk if youll say this later in the video, but Rudy reminds me of Teddy. Hes also a child of divorce and its one ofnthe reasons he became a tradesman. He wanted to fix his parents relationship by sitting in between them and it failed but he still had the comfort of sitting in between t His parents until his mom was gonna bring her boyfriend to Thanksgiving. Its also another reason Teddy has a fixing compulsion and hoards. In this instance Rudy relys on magic to at least make his parents laugh, like you said the one constant to keep people happy. As well as making sure they know hes "ok" woth the whole situation. So when he failed people werent happy and he broke.

second bobs burgers video of yours i’ve watched, and dude, i’m pumped to watch em all. you are a super chill dude and i already love your vids. i almost never cry over shows or movies, but out of all of them, bobs burgers, specifically this episode- made me cry. my aunt and uncle went through a divorce, and it had a big impact on my cousins, one of them being my best friend. this episode touched me, it really did, because it reminded me of my cousin and how rough divorces are. i know this probably sounds stupid, but louise and rudy remind me of me and my cousin. anyways, this episode really made me so sad.

I didn't care for Fight at the Not Okay Chore-ral very much. I felt Louise was being too much of a brat and I didn't like how she needed to be bribed in the end. Her mother is crying and she is demanding candy. I like cartoonish over the top bratty like when the kids were drilling in the locker for the secret ceramics room. Realistic bratty isn't very fun to watch.

I think something that stood out to me was that Rudy seemed to have started delving deeper into his magic tricks becauze it united his parents because they were proud of him and enjoyed his magic tricks; even when they were growing apart as a couple, Rudy pulling out a trick got them to smile and act like they used to. I think the failure of the magic trick during the dinner was a bit deeper than a break in routine causing him to break down. I think it was a part of him realizing there is no hope for things to go back to the way they used to be, before the divorce when he had both his parents and didn't have to go back and forth. He wanted to feel like he had his family again, and the Belcher's remind him of that warmth of family, so he didn't hesitate to have dinner with them for comfort after the failed magic trick.

Honestly this episode had me in tears. Little guy saw his parents upset and thought he could fix the situation. You're a prince to try little Rudy, but it's ok. On the Rudy and Louise thing, honestly I think they will always be part of each other's lives and I could see them try a date maybe in highschool, but I don't see it going well. Romance wise I think they are too much like siblings who adore each other but maybe it's not gonna become a romantic love. Maybe it stays a familial love. Though that could be born of my distaste of shipping children.

Hard agree on all of this. I haven't been keeping up with Bob's Burgers as much so I actually paused your video half way through and went and watched the episode and yes to all points! With regards to Rudy and Louise as characters, I think if people wanted to step away from shipping there's a thread to follow usually in the way Louise tends to gravitate to cute things that can't defend themselves (puppies etc) and when she positions herself in stories that include Rudy it's often as Rudy's Mum (I can think of two instances she does this in, not sure there are more). So there's a sense to which Rudy's general wimpishness (vulnerability?) just sort of matches Louise's morality. At the same time, I think that vulnerability is a part of a lot of experiences of being a boy and it's not often represented in anyway except comedically. So it's nice to see the show step out of that and present Rudy's life as a genuine, serious story, rather than just a vessel for humour.

This episode reminded me of the Plight before Christmas in its emotional foundation. We meet Rudy during the field trip to the museum with his inhaler and cymbols in case someone wanted to jam. Regular is in his name and his world is surrounded by a wall defined by asthma, louise promptly pushes those walls down(like she does) and Rudy is ready for the adventure. Every time we have seen him since he has been a joy. Jumping his bike over a 6 inch ramp is epic and we-are-there-for-it. He is the friend our Moms loved and Teachers were soft on. In this episode we see him lost and his magic has failed him. He seeks the Belcher's and as always he is instantly part of the family. Gene calls him a Brother and he sits at the dinner table as if he has always been there. In the end Louise knows what Rudy needs and she joins him at the restaurant. Rudy was the fifth wheel but Louise brought balance to the setting. Now everyone had a date.

0:43 I disagree strongly that its "really getting good". Seasons 1-11 are the golden age of Bob's Burgers. Season 12 was absolutely horrible with a few good ones sprinkled in. I like to say all the funny went into the movie because they were working on it simultaneously. Season 13 was a massive improvement over 12 but still not its best. The problem is a lot of the newer episodes lack that classic Bob's Burgers escalation. Part of the fun of Bob's Burgers is the episodes start out normal then in act 2 or 3 the plot gets kookoo bananas. One Perfect example of this is House of a Thousand Bounces. It starts out as an ordinary birthday party then the kids high jack a moon bounce. We went from exciting plot lines like Bob gets locked in a camping supply store and has to rock climb his way out to basic plots with not much going on like Lousie befriends a spider.
