I just realized that they're dressed like witches because of the line in Wizard of Oz when the Witch of the West is melting, and she screams, "Oh, what a world, what a world!" They are so darned clever.
My father always used to play this whole album back when I was a small child, and even back then, when i must have been about five, this was the song that stuck in my mind. It almost became the soundtrack to my childhood. Anyway, I was digging out some of my dads CDs and I found this album and when this song came on i began to get very sentimental. Silly I know, but the memories just came flooding back. But I'm fifteen now and I'm sure that now I've rediscovered it, I will forever cherish this song. Sorry for the paragraph
His voice is so damn perfect! I'm a musician, but when he sings I sometimes cannot even pick out the individual instruments (which I always do); he's perfect.
I was beginning to notice the similarities between the structure and Bolero, and thought it was a nice little nod to the classic...then it went full out in the melody of Bolero and I was a little blown away.
Who gives a fuck if he's gay, straight, an addict or a spiritual leader....well, this song is just too good to be true. And it takes guts to include the bolero which is so famous in its own right and do it with so much class. And yes, what a world we live in!
I love the Oscar Wilde comparison! I'm a big Wilde fan and realized that may very well be why I love Rufus so much. Definitely see the similarities, especially after that "straight men... right!"
Ben Brower, I’ve always loved Rufus’ reaction when he sings “straight men” in this song. In this case, he says “right”, but sometimes he shrugs, the message being “what can I tell you; straight men don’t read fashion magazines.” Thanks for noticing.
Oh my goodness!! This video unlocked some key childhood memories of listening to Rufus with my friends and watching this dvd! This was long before I came out and his flamboyance really made me feel seen and heard. Thank you for sharing
Calm Dust, you are one of the few people I know of who discovered Rufus after I did. I found him in 2015, and got to my first concert mid-2016. I’m still a newbie as the people I know who follow him have been doing so for many years. I hope that you have gotten to a few of his performances, because he always puts on a great show.
Absolutely adorable! And sweet and gracious in person ... he stopped his car to sign autographs and take pics in Scottsdale last night. What an incredible musician, entertainer and... a sweetheart to boot!
It is a sample of Ravel's Boléro, it's been in a number of films but it is actually an orchestral pice from the late 20's... and at the end there's a brief sample of 'Over the rainbow', which is from the movie 'The wizard of oz'. I personnally think this song is a proof of Rufus' genius and vast musical knowledge... really beautiful and optimistic ;)
Approximately 14 years ago I heard this song on a late night show ( Johnathan Ross I think) and it took my breath away..his performance, his voice, his presence ... . I never heard it again but his name and the word plane would occasionally visit me...I mentioned it to my partner and he found this little beaut...goose pimples!...I just completely fell in love with Rufus Wainwright and this crazy world we live in all over again!!
I love the comment about the tower and the woman! He is so damn funny. Such a dark, sick, twisted wit that I love and admire. Rufus is quickly becoming my fave singer.
What a fantastic song!!!!!! adding ravels bolero in there was genius, and it took me until the end to get the wizard of oz reference. Oh my gosh amazing!!!!
Absolutely exhilerating artistry - the courage, the honesty, the poise and the fun, the creativity. An artist at the peak of his powers. Wonderful. This world needs more Rufus.
Men reading fashion magazines Oh, what a world it seems we live in Straight men Oh what a world we live in Why am I always on a plane or a fast train? Oh, what a world my parents gave me Always travelling But not in love Still, I think I'm doing fine Wouldn't it be a lovely headline? Rufus' charisma and energy is so fabulous. I'm straight and I love his music, so I don't know what all of the fuss is about over him being gay. Regardless, he makes great music and you can tell that he's really into it. He sings from his fucking heart, unlike most musicians these days. This clip made me smile the whole way through.
This has got to be one of my favourite songs ever, I find it hilarious! ( fabulous dancer and straight..yeah! ).Don't know if he sparks a spliff or a straight up but good on you Rufus x
