I’d like the USA/Canada to host the tournament. The RWC has never been hosted in the Americas before and I’d think it would be a good way to promote rugby in the US and Canada.
It is the turn of the Southern Hemisphere. Either South Africa or Australia. 2031 should be in a country that hasn't hosted it before, for a team that is getting close to tier 1 standard, just like Japan in 2019.
For the possible hosts: Argentina - If they can sort out the issues with their economy to even host a tournament USA/Russia - Both also will need to deliver on the pitch like Japan and not just off it Australia - RA needs to get it together and get out of its slump South Africa - Ideal hosts for sure And for the hypothetical ones: Italy will definitely be decent hosts, although I only see Fiji as capable hosts alongside Australia since they have two stadiums of international standards unlike Samoa and Tonga who will need some obvious improvements on their respective stadiums. For the tier 2 Europe teams, four of them based in the Rugby Europe Championship can definitely host a world cup since they're financially stable but will also need to perform better on the pitch like Georgia and Romania at least. But this is just merely my opinion though.
Look at the economic situation in Argentina. Can't see them having the finances to host it and an unstable currency would make things difficult for organisers and fans alike.

I'd give it to Argentina. Great people, Buenos Aires is my favourite city in South America, absolutely loved it there, the rugby fans could take time out for tango lessons and there's even a Temple Bar replica of the one in Dublin! Best steak dinners around and incredibly cheap!! Gorgeous girls, great beer, great wine.....what more could you want? 🍻🍻🍻🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷
Hopefully Ireland since they where so close to getting the last one...not to mention anyone who would travel there..would love!! it...pity wales and Scotland didnt help them,would have benefit them immensely
As far as I am aware, Ireland weren't willing to co-host woth (or allocate some matches to) Wales and Scotland hence why neither voted for Ireland. Wales followed the WR recommended bid of South Africa and Scotland voted for France. As a Welshman I would have preferred Ireland but I can understand why Wales and Scotland didn't support them in the end.
Ireland weren't close to getting ut they fell at the first hurdle. There infrastructure isnt as good as SA or France who won it. And if you wanted to grow the game you would rather have it in USA or CANADA
USA would be interesting! 2026: Football World Cup (alongside Canada and México) 2027: (possibly) Rugby World Cup 2028: Olympics in LA 3 major events in the US in 3 years in a row!
Hope ireland reapplies. But i know the state of most of the stadium (D GAA ones that is besides Croke Park + new one in Cork and d accent RDS) arent up to standard. But if they brought up to scratch then we should defo reaply. After that i think another new ground should be sought such as USA. Russia i dont agree with with the country reputation for doping and d social issues which FIFA ignored hope WRB wont ignore these issues. For the future maybe scotland could possibly host on there own. 4 large stadium and i think enough average size. Also Italy if the Italian fa (like Scottish) agree for the use of there stadium
Would be good to have Argentina + Uruguay: sports-mad countries, Argentina is very competitive + it would open the game to South America (Brazil? Chile?) but given the economic situation, it is not sure. It would probably go to South Africa (world champions, not having the Cup since 1995). Europe not sure as 2023 is already in France and USA/Canada rugby is still a very minor sport. For Pacific Islands, it is too late I am afraid why was NZ selfish in 2011 not sharing games with them?
Ireland have always performed well and qualified for every world cup!! Remember rugby is only a niche sport! The big sports in Ireland are Football and Hurling and these sports are organized by the GAA! Irish sports fanboys find theses native games fascinating and the fanboys do not follow Rugger or soccer!!
Australia and USA would be the front runners. The Australian government has given 9 million AUD for the bid process, A lot of fans have suggested that the interest needs to be brought back as League and AFL has had more focus in the past decade. Personally I would prefer Argentina as it would be great to travel to and grow the game there, but I don’t think the infrastructure is enough and their government struggles with Debt.
The process should be transparent. Serious questions was raised when South Africa scored the highest with the 2023 host evaluation and under the table negotiations caused them to lose the bid.
I think they should have it in Argentina, it’d make a buzz like it did in Japan with a nation that hadn’t had it before and it’d make the sport spread across the country and hopefully help to develop a nation to become a better rugby nation like what has happened with Japan
Absolutely Russia should be given the opportunity. It would be a success and rugby is something that Russia is looking to develop. Indeed the league is improving all the time. Australia had a go in 2003 so it is time to open it up and grow the game. A strong Russian team is an asset and hopefully Germany, Spain, Brazil, Chile, US, Canada etc will grow too.
I feel like Russia and USA is still premature. Giving out World cups doesn't magically turn you into good rugby nation. Australia and Argentina are the choices for me
The main reason why Ireland lost the 2023 bid is simply both Scotland and Wales RFUs voted against Ireland's bid, good luck in future bids both Unions, they won't be getting the Irish vote, England actually backed the bid, it won't come around to Ireland again in my lifetime...
I maintain that South African should co-host with Namibia. Let them get one big stadium and host at least 6 pool games and one Semi. Its only fair. As for the soccer world cup, next time it returns to Africa. South Africa should host it with Namibia, Botwana and Lesotho. With South African getting the finals and only one quarter final.
I'd love to see Ireland hosting it in the near future. The craic would be mighty. Italy initiated a bid for 2023 (or was it 2019?). Anyway they'd be great hosts, too. Spain is a strong European tier 2 nation. Sure, they'd have to use soccer grounds. Another, rather weird idea would be Germany. Our national team is definitively not up to the job to compete successfully at a world cup, but we do have the infrastructure and the potential market is very big.
USA, hands down. World rugby wants all those wealthy Ivy League former scholars, to start throwing millions into their local teams. Ireland for the following RWC for sure.
USA will probably host because the next year the Olympics will be in LA (Japan 2019, Tokyo 2020... France 2023 Paris 2024 ... even London being before the 2015 rugby world cup in England), the tournament is likely to be held outside of europe since France would have hosted the previous world cup and finally I think world rugby will have every second world cup in a developing country (e.g. Japan, France, USA, 2031 Ireland +co-host, Argentina, Australia or South Africa)
I’m an Aussie (I saw the RWC in Japan). I think Argentina (and maybe Uruguay) or North America should get it before Australia or South Africa get to host it again. Australia and the Pasifika nations would be good in the future though.
2027 - Argentina. They're a great country and deserve it more than anyone. 2031 - Ireland. Passionate country. They deserve a tournament. 2035 - Italy or Russia.
The problem with the Australia and pacific cohosting and tier 2 combined hosting is qualification. Hosts must automatically qualify, how do you work around that? Do Fiji, Samoa, Tonga and Australia all automatically qualify? What happens to other tier 2 nations that no longer get the opportunity to qualify, seeing as countries like Tonga and Samoa usually qualify through intercontinental conference competitions. Same problem with countries like Romania/Georgia/Italy
USA should have the 2027 world cup. Its never been hosted in the Americas before so it shoud go there next in all fairness. USA would be an amazing host country with all it can offer. The 2031 tournament should go to Argentina allowing every continent to host it. Beyond that South Africa should host it again in 2035 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of their historic win in 1995 at home. All three countries are easily capable of hosting the tournament.
USA is a no brainer really, especially now MLR is starting up. USA get better and better every year and could come good by 2027. Plenty of stadia, new continent for RWC, big tourist attraction, great potential all round. Ticks all boxes.
As a South African I think America would be huge for the sport. The team might not do well but it would be the greatest marketing for all team's especially top tier nations.
I love the idea of Pacific Island nations co-hosting with a bigger nation/economy. I can’t see the Powers That Be being open to it, for some reason. You talk about host teams being good enough. You suggest Italy who have never been successful at just about any tournament, let alone the World Cup. England hosted in 2015 and didn’t make it out of their pool, so how important is “being good enough”? Admittedly rugby is well established in both of those countries, so maybe that’s the difference
Now Argentina has withdrawn from bid and that means there are just two competing bidders: Australia and Russia. I think Russia will win the bid and beat Australia as traditional power in rugby union. Just look at 2018 FIFA World Cup bidding. England; Portugal and Spain; and Netherlands and Belgium, as traditional powers in football, were favorite to win the bid. But, eventually it was Russia who won the bid. Russia will cause a shock again if they win the 2027 RWC bid. I agree with you that the main concern for Russia is will they perform good enough in their own country? But I think if World Rugby want to spread and promote rugby union more, they should choose Russia as 2027 RWC host.
Unfortunately all your arguments for where it should be hosted is pointless. It boils down to money. Countries like South Africa and Argentina will never win a bid to host a World Cup in the future. Regardless of their success as a team. But don't worry, money counts for nothing when you face the Springboks.
Argentina yeah, South Africa however is a guaranteed money maker when it comes to a rugby event of this magnitude, despite all woes in South Africa currently, the country is still a much better place than Argentina is, not to mention that SA already has most things in place and i can imagine that South Africa would want such an event, especially to boost its tourism industry, which took a massive hit because of the Pandemic.
Ireland didn't have the stadia, they would need to make a joint bid with at least one more country to make it viable. I would like to see a 3 way celtic nation joint bid: this could be a "regular" host every 30 years or so alongside England, France, South Africa, Australia and probably Japan as well now. Would like to see Argentina, Italy and the USA also become hosts in the next 30 - 40 years. Argentina would be a good shout for 2027.
Sorry Ireland DID have the stadia that was total crap New Zeland hosted the competition with less so that point is mute. 5 Stadia with over 45-85,00 capacity, Croke Park, Lansdowne, Thomand, Ravenhill, Páirc Uí Chaoimh, Semple Stadium, Gaelic Grounds... Hell even stadiums like Tallaght Stadium, Windsor Park, Nowlan Park all over 10,000 seated close to Hotels ...
World Rugby shot themselves in the foot by choosing France in 2023, the last three RWC’s have all been in the Northern Hemisphere, so while I am of the opinion that having USA be the hosts is the best way to grow the game financially, it’s not really fair on the Southern Hemisphere that they miss out, again! Perhaps the most logical thing is that SA is awarded the next Women’s RWC to host. I love the idea of the Pacific Islands being involved in hosting the next RWC with Australia! Maybe the next men’s RWC could be in Argentina & the women’s in USA?? Which I think is the only way that gives everyone a fair shot...
Great idea Andre Dr Waal. Unfortunately the amount of revenue a tournament can generate is one of the top factors so countries like Argentina may never get the Men's RWC.
It won't be a European country host the 2027 RWC. 2023 RWC already host by France, an European country. So World Rugby won't choose another European country for 2027 RWC.
As a South African living in England.....I would like to see 2027 RWC in the USA. Major League Rugby is taking off (for the 3rd time) in the US and it will be a massive boost to rugby the world over. Not to mention a massive holiday.
Subjecting international rugby fans to US immigration and customs is a sure-fire way to douse interest. I would have to agree with your picks, to be honest... US rugby is simply not ready, whereas Argentina is probably the most deserving.
It will be the 45th anniversary year of the Falklands war, as an England fan and by then I hopefully will have a well payed job, as I am only 22, to afford to go to a World Cup to support. But don’t now what the reception would be like for England fans because of this, especially in the south of the Country.
Sorry but I've been to Argentina and they are the most welcoming and hospitable people you'll ever have the fortune of meeting or visiting. There are loads of ex-pats down there and all treated well, if you gauge your opinion on that stupid gobshite Clarkson who should have been lynched then that is a pity. Clearly Australia and SAfrica are in 1st place, and maybe USA in 2nd. There are many football/American football stadiums which could be adapted, in addition to the impact the NRL may have from now on up to 2027
Let's first see whether there is still a Springbok team in 2023 + 2027 as reportedly the government = Minister of Sport will in future be selecting all sports teams. Overseas clubs and countries should expect a huge influx of SA sportsmen and women.
Maybe Argentina but their economy may not afford it and you don't want it like the Olympics where they struggle to meet costs. How about Georgia (the country not the US state!) - the official national sport, Europe based, grow the game, have hosted the U21 RWC comp before I think and great scenery.
I think it should be Russia. Russia is clearly interested and already have the infrastructure needed (after they had the 2018 FIFA world cup, and Sochi Olympics). Plus after France it should go somewhere new, and Argentina have dropped out. Finally, the Russian speaking world is huge (Eastern Europe, Central Asia) and it would be huge exposure for the sport imho.
