My Mum was born on the Pear Tree Estate and grew up in the Town. We would always visit when we were kids. My Uncle cleans and keeps the Town tidy to this very day.
I now live in Australia but my great grandparents and their family lived in Rugeley and I am currently researching their history. This video was amazing to see. I let my imagination run wild!
Hiya Jayne... Absolutely loved the pictures.... I don't know if you live in Rugeley but, many years ago, my Aunty and Uncle (from my Father's side of the family) had a pub in Rugeley.. An odd named public house called The Swan With Two Necks.... With the most kindest regards from Nigel xx
I knew it well Nigel, that was at Longford off the A51. Sat out in the beer garden on sunny afternoons. I used to live on Cannock Chase near Rugeley, a lovey wild, green oasis on the edge of the West Midalnds conurbation. I now live beside the sea - well almost, in Scarborough. Glad you found the Midland Memories playlist Nigel. x
@@feline1104 That's it... I'm talking about the late sixties and early seventies... I was only a child at the time... It was owned by my Aunty Nancy Beryl and Uncle Michael... I think he used to be something to do with the police force before having the pub.... XX.... I live in Chipping Sodbury, which is near Bristol Jayne xx
@@nigelbevan8449 I was there from 1978 unitl 2004 Nigel. I used to run a rambling club based on Cannock Chase. 'The Swan with Two Necks' was one our ports of call! There is much history to do with that area and it was very beautiful, but alas now I suspect very much more built-up!
@@feline1104 I remember that there was a jukebox in the corner... It had Alright Now by a band called Free and I kept putting it on Jayne... I can't remember much about it though I'm afraid to say.... Old age creeping up on me no doubt.... XX
The town planning of Rugeley has been awful for years. It was very ugly in the 70's and 80's when I grew up there. You see these lovely old photos of its past and you can't help but wonder why they demolished period buildings and built the hideous in door market / bus station, and the shops along Horse Fair? Just horrible. Does anyone remember Lo-Cost and Bewise behind Horse Fair? Or Army & Navy in Brook Street? Or the clothes store Zizmans? I got off the train going through Rugeley last year, just to walk around and see if much had changed. All of the shops I remember like Woolworths, Martins News Agents, Army & Navy etc are long gone, but everything else looked pretty much the same. Also, why did they get rid of the paddling pool in Elmore Park? When I was a kid, along Brewery Street was a bridal shop, a sportswear/school uniform shop, a chip shop that served the chips in newspaper, Carols Discount, a hairdressing salon and a smallish super market that is now an indoor market.
