@@l.g.brandon1451 No I have an issue with a shit gun. I own over 10 rugers not counting the 2 5.7 Rugers. This gun is crap. Frames breaking, ejectors falling out, mag catch buttons falling out, Slides rusting, falling apart or slide parts breaking, bad magazines, out of spec chambers on the barrel, recoil guide spring rods breaking caused by horribly finished burs on the inner edges of the spring shaving the rod down. This ruger is pure shit. PSA Rock is cheaper and light years better and gives the FsN a run for it's money as a duty grade pistol and not some cheap plinker.

In your mind should be clear that if throw any firearm in the ground something will happen, is call being carefully with something that you should have discipline and safety in every angle possible. More people will shoot someone or something or even them before this firearm goes off. It’s call human error not the firearm.

Well, there is a difference between manually releasing the sear with the gun disassembled, and the probability of it being released by being dropped, or bumped, or joggled in the field. I looked through all the Ruger product literature and see where they talk about the trigger having greater than standard engagement combined with a strong sear spring so that does factor into the issue. For example, double-action revolvers are viewed as inherently safe due to the long, "heavyish" DA trigger pull needed to fire them. However, if we hook that trigger on a fixed item and press the gun into it, 11-13 pounds of force can be achieved rather easily, thus causing the gun to fire! In the R57 case, it does appear the hammer drops fully when the sear is manually released, but how much measured force does that take? What is the total engagement surface area between sear and hammer? Is the engagement "positive" in nature, meaning if the two parts are bumped with enough force to make them "slip" but not let go, will the sear and hammer return to full engagement? While 1911 pattern pistols have a hammer blocking thumb safety, and trigger blocking grip safety, most have nothing preventing the inertia firing pin from vaulting forward in the event of a perfect, nose-on strike onto a hard surface, and this potential is often discussed as if it's a near-certainty, whereas in real life it's more of a "highly unlikely" event. So there is one example of an unsafe design dating from before 1911 that has managed to wend its way down the path of history to remain one of the most popular designs sold today! So popular in fact, that virtually EVERYBODY produces a copy of it and only a few incorporate a "fancy" firing pin block device! Yet we don't hear, or read about 1911's going bang every few days due to being dropped "just right". Something unique to the 1911 is that if the thumb safety isn't correctly fitted, when the gun is cocked and locked and someone presses the trigger, then releases, upon swiping off the thumb safety, the hammer can drop...granted it's the result of improper fitment, but still, it's possible. As to the suggestion that sear engagement alone isn't sufficient to counter a potential drop, let me recount the tale of the first commercially available HK-91s in the United States. The trigger pull was HORRIFIC! Such a trigger pull would NEVER be allowed on an American designed rifle. The "excuse" for this is that HK "designed" the trigger and sear engagement to remain solid even when dropped 80 feet from an airplane onto the ground - safety off! WTF? With that kind of sear engagement, they didn't need a manual safety at all! Luckily I was able to figure out how to improve the trigger to near-match standards and subsequently used that rifle to win a High Powered rifle match! But the point is, that rifle - as delivered, was NEVER going to just "go bang" from being dropped! Then comes the real probability of a discharge during normal handling due to the sear being "bumped". When wearing a gun, the human body acts like a giant shock absorber. Leaping from tall buildings onto concrete, or ejecting from planes where a 40 G deceleration might be encountered on the whole person, does NOT translate to that R57 in a chest holster! While some degree of absolute probability of the sear and hammer jumping out of engagement must exist, the PRACTICAL probability of such an event is a decimal followed by a long string of zeros before you reach the number "1". It just ain't gonna happen. If the R57 is bobbled on the draw by some urban commando, CAN if fire if it hits just the right way on just the right surface? Maybe, but what is the REAL likelihood of this happening? I'd say about on par with being hit on the head by a frog tossed out of a clear sky from a thunderstorm two counties over....yeah, even then, being hit by the frog is more likely! Anyone who has, does, or will carry a 1911 pattern pistol with no internal firing pin block, in the condition known as "cocked and locked" (we know that ALL urban commandos constantly direct the sheeple to always carry with a round in the chamber) is no LESS safe, nor more greatly endangered by carrying a Ruger 57 chambered. Does this constitute "advice" that anyone carry the R57 chambered? Sure, if you want, go ahead! You won't be at any greater PRACTICAL risk than carrying any number of other guns chambered, to include MOST 1911 pattern pistols!

In your situation I would opt for a revolver , the 3 inch 7 shot s&w 357 would be perfect. I say this because with most assaults the perp is right up on you. If you are holding someone with one hand and have gun pushed in their side it may not fire. If you push hard enough it will push the slide back enough to keep the weapon from firing. I would also hide 2-3 push daggers on your chair. You will know the best places. Stay away from mace. If you use it you won't be able to escape back mist. A charter arms 44 bulldog is also a good choice with the right ammo. You could always buy both .

I saw Tim's review on the Ruger-57 and didn't fully understand the issues with the passive block. He'd pointed out that the manual stated that it should be carried with an empty chambered, but I noticed that the manuals for my two carry guns (American Compact and LCP II) had the same language. This led me to believe that it was just Ruger's legal department covering themselves.

I picked one of these up for fun, after watching this video, I spent a fair amount of time trying to get the hammer to drop with the slide on. Smacking it pretty good against a pine board on the front and back, with the safety on and off I was not able to get the hammer to drop. With the safety off impacts to the barrel/ front would shift the entire slide back about 1/8-1/4 in back, disengaging the transfer bar- but not dropping the hammer. Rear impacts had no real effect. I’d be interested to see somebody really beat one up to see if it happens. I’ll be watching this as I see that it’s a concern, but hoping somebody will do some real drop tests and see what happens. Not a carry gun for me, so I’m not really concerned beyond an interest to see what happens.

The problem with this argument is it only counts one's own personal experience. I would imagine (just making up a number) that 9,999 out of 10,000 Ruger 57s could be dropped countless times without a problem. But the other 1 out of 10,000 may have a slight defect that exacerbates the danger presented in a lack of a drop safety, thereby posing a significant hazard to the user (whereas a gun with a drop safety would still have that extra fail-safe).

No real problems outside of isolated issues that all guns have. I wouldn’t appendix carry the 57, but I also wouldn’t appendix carry a Glock. I have zero problem carrying the 57 at four o’clock. You’re kind of pointing out what could be potential problems and acting like any of this is new or somehow unique to the 57. This gun seems safe to me. I’ve hit it with a dead blow, drop tested it, and done everything I can to make it not safe. It just is.

Watch the operation video here www.ruger.com/products/ruger57/models.html You make a point; but I have to wonder if when you are manually disengaging the sear with your pick, that you are also moving it so far as to nullify the secondary hammer catch that is supposed to prevent the hammer from fully falling when the trigger is not pressed. Additionally, the hammer is not fully cocked until the trigger is fully pulled so as to create additional sear engagement and make it more unlikely for the sear to disengage without the trigger being fully pressed. Finally, the firing pin is not free floating; but rather resists movement via spring tension and the pin itself is titanium and has little inertial mass to be affected by all but the hammer. Life is a game of risks and we must all determine a level that is personally acceptable. I will carry the Ruger 57 in condition 1. P.S. Please produce more T6B ammo... great stuff!

Nice try to pre-empt the criticism of your video by calling out the "ruger fanboys" before you even start. I don't own a ruger at all, I'm just looking into getting one of these five sevens. I always carry without one in the chamber. I understand what that means for my reaction ability and accept the risk of being in an encounter where I would need an extra 2 seconds. The way I see it, I would only ever engage if I had time to consciously and positively identify the need to engage. I know a lot of guys claim you have to play fast an lose because the average encounter is over in X seconds, whatever. I'll take the additional safety, and the inherent time to positively decide to engage. That being said, as others in the comments have mentioned, the whole don't carry with one in the chamber is legal ass covering. Let's be honest. All of your other gripes are valid as they are opinion, and should be expected on an opinion video.

I’ve tried hundreds of times to get mine to drop the hammer - by dropping it or banging it around. I’ve dropped it, banged it on walls, I’ve used a hard plastic hammer. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong here... If the mass of everything was designed to be very safe without a firing pin block...is that an issue? The firing pin spring...the part that only allows the pin to work when struck hard enough...is really really stiff stuff. Or...are more people like this guy, just looking at it and expecting that there has to be a firing pin safety in there and absolutely its absence means YOU WILL all be killed - statistically of course - as time reaches to infinity... Have you not seen what happens to a Glock when something in that firing pin safety gets broken and jammed? NO, REALLY - ALL of my OTHER semiautomatic pistols have a firing pin safety and this means (totally logically) that the Ruger 57 is unsafe! Wait, what? ;) Well, I’m glad I don’t really know anyone who would assume things like this without actual testing backing it up (or having read a thorough test report) - regardless, I am still going to try to get mine to drop the hammer in a fall or impact - but so far the testing results have been really good! I have a background is in destructive testing and evaluation - I’ll find a way to get it to drop the hammer. So far, WRT hazards to carry, the problems have either been elusive or non-existent or even perhaps so unlikely that it simply does not merit concern. I’ll stick with it. Me, personally, if the concern is just that it might go off (although incredibly rarely) while you are pistol whipping someone with a round in the chamber, then it’s possible this is a non-issue for me. I’m not a fan of pistol whipping...but I’m just one guy. One guy who has seen way more than one FN57 fall apart out of the box. The first mark had some serious issues, well documented. The FN57 Mk2 has some new issues and some old issues, but it’s still a decent weapon and having worked with them regarding other FN products, I believe that FN has been reasonably good at making things right with the owners. (Ruger has an excellent reputation for same.) FWIW, I consider most of the FN57 issues (old and new) to be Quality Control-related as opposed to them just being “bad” or “unsafe” by design. I’ve been reading some of the forum posts about the FN (since about 2005) and the Ruger since its announcement... The problem with these (or indeed, forum posts about similar issues with many other firearms) is that they don’t seem to be reliable reports... Indeed, you seriously must take what you read with a grain of salt. (I don’t know why it is, but pretty much every firearm has been known to have the occasional issue out of the box. Every manufacturer has some sort of Quality Control and Quality Assurance program. What I’d like to see is all the data on build and service for each weapon from the manufacturer - minus the serial number. I want to do an analysis on that data, I want it bad! They need not include the serial numbers in the data for it to be *very* meaningful. Alas, the likelihood of getting that data is extremely low... Lawyers would freak out and kill the idea regardless of how well conceived and executed it was.)

I'm not following. #1- you say this weapon is not safe to carry, as it should be carried in "rack it to crack it" state. ALL defense carry should be rack'n'crack. Live carry shows intent, and THAT is a liability. If you're not LEO/etc., you should never carry live. #2- sights - Ruger offers rear fiber optic. If you want it, buy it. I personally prefer the OEM setup... and God knows it beats Glock offerings any day of the week. #3- the trigger is very workable... and you can't judge it with an empty well. The live feel is much better, and gets better after break-in. #4- this is NOT a "match" pistol. That's obvious at a glance. A fiber front sight dictates a "match" pistol? That's like saying a hood scoop makes a dragster. #5- weights and specifications - "they basically copied the FN" no shit. Really? You're talking about a 5.7mm bore pistol with a polymer frame. You clearly state the variances in weight. What the hell did you expect? 2oz variations on two of the lightest full frame centerfire pistols on the market? That would kind of defeat the purpose DON'T YA THINK? #6- lack of passive firing pin block - you're calling for lawsuits ("just like Ruger's gonna get")? How 'bout you read the fucking manual (which you obviously did, when you stated their manual SPECIFICALLY STATES, DO NOT carry this weapon with a live round in the chamber). If you're depending on a safety to relieve your responsibility and accountability of RESPONSIBLE CARRY, YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM. I'm not a "Ruger fan boy" as you repeatedly state. "Ruger fan boys" aren't the only people who should be knocking you for alleging a manufacturer's preexisting supposed liability that simply DOES NOT EXIST. I don't give a damned what brand you buy. #1- ALWAYS read the manufacturer supplied literature. #2- KNOW YOUR WEAPON. #3- civilian's should NEVER carry in live state... EVER. Why? First off, it's not safe. Second... the first time you have to discharge your weapon in our modern camera laden world, and you don't have to check your weapon, it shows predisposition and intent to fire... both of which can land you a prison sentence EVEN IN A SELF DEFENSE SITUATION. #4- anyone who clearly reads the manufacturers guidelines and doesn't follow safe operation directives is part of the problem with our country. They hear some asshat like you say "lawsuit" and they go out trying to replicate the issue to make some cash. Can't we just be thankful that we have a viable, accurate, well functioning alternative to the FN at HALF THE PRICE with 98% of the functionality, a better grip, more visible sight, OEM optic prep, better function with mounted optics, an all metal upper, lower barrel axis, and better AIP than a pistol costing nearly twice as much?

I have carried a five seven for many years and have a Ruger I have no issues. I always carry one in the pipe so when I need to take the gun off line and crack a round it's ready. You can carry a 57 hot but the manufacturer doesn't recommend it. My advice get a five seven better pistol in my opinion or get a Glock, SIG, Smith and Wesson etc...

Did Ruger put a passive hammer block into the "pro" variant 57 that lacks the thumb safety?
@EliteAmmunition
@EliteAmmunition Год назад
I can't confirm or deny. I have not had one in my hands. Not Sure how they wold do it though. I would like to see if they did. A passive firing pin block would be so much easier and cheaper. A bump on the transfer bar could de-activate it lust the the FNH Five Seven and a few hundred other current handguns do.

You do realize that when a round is chambered the hammer is not fully cocked. The final cocking stroke is when the trigger is pulled like a double action pistol or more like one of the striker fired pistols. I doubt the hammer has enough energy to detonate the primer even if it could be released by say a drop.
@EliteAmmunition
@EliteAmmunition 4 месяца назад
Wrong, Ruger took basically a DAO system and shortened the pre travel. The hammer is FULLY cocked, you can see it in the video if you watched the hole thing.
@denster274

@EliteAmmunition
@EliteAmmunition 4 месяца назад
@@denster274 Take your slide off and look how far the hammer is cocked back. Then try to make the argument it's not fully cocked. The trigger is at full power when it's cocked and will easily have the power to fire a round. Again the hammer and sear are NOT locked in anyway and there is NO passive firing pin block. Ruger took every cheap shit cost cut they could.
@petergriffin383
@petergriffin383 4 года назад
I tried this on my Ruger 57 and the hammer fell to the half cock position everytime. Unless the trigger is pulled it'll fall to half cock. Maybe Ruger improved the design and didn't say anything?? Idk, all I can say is I cannot duplicate what you demonstrated here.

I’ve carried the Ruger 57 for 3 months now. Not concealed I have a FN 509 Compact and a m&p shield 2.0 40cal(yes I carry two pistols concealed.) The 57 I have ran close to 4500 rounds thru it. I’ve had two malfunctions. It was a double feed on the last 2 rounds. I own 150 acres and I openly carry my 57 on my property. It’s been dropped a few times not on any hard surfaces. I have had a single safety issue. I had the FN 57 for 10 years before that and it was a malfunction machine.

Jay Wolf Elite Ammunition the FN has a break in period. FN replaced the pistol 3 separate times within the first year I owned it. FN customer service was great to deal with that’s the biggest reason I got the FN509C. The final replacement I had a 2-3 malfunctions during the break in period but after that it was a good pistol. I haven’t shot it in a while but the last time I did was to try out the ss90 prototype 23 grain clones. My only gripe about the Ruger is the trigger. Take up is semi smooth, has a good wall but way to much creep instead of the crisp break. Hopefully a trigger upgrade hits the market soon.
@EliteAmmunition
@EliteAmmunition 4 года назад
@@sbrmilitia I disagree the FsN never really needed a break in period. A removal of shipping grease and magazine breaking yes. # pistol in one year? Yeah I want to see documentation. I own the first USG sold in NA (Which now has over 50k through it) and while there have been issues with hammer springs, Third party contracted assembly that casue micro cracks in the front rails, mid USG production, and a magazine catch upgrade 3 guns in one year is beyond extreme. Unfortunately ALL of those guy you dealt with have been fired and CS taken over by Browning support which is epically HORRID. For the first 6 months the Browning Elmer Fudds denied FN MADE the five seven.

@sbrmilitia 4 года назад
Jay Wolf Elite Ammunition it was around 2004 when I got the FN. The break in paperwork came directly from FN on the last pistol they sent. I’m sure I could go find the documentation for all of it somewhere in the back of the safe.
@sbrmilitia
@sbrmilitia 4 года назад
Jay Wolf Elite Ammunition I did not deal with FN directly but a FN dealer. Instead of sending the gun off for repair. They swapped it for a new gun. Had me write up what happened. Under what conditions did it fail, what ammo I used, how many round until the failure and my contact info. Gave me a new gun. That one got sent off with the information I provided. That’s the reason I have a safe full of FN products. I don’t know if they are still as good as they were me to in the mid 2000s but I got treated right. I have zero complaints about that.

Also sorry to break this news to you, but your piss poor straw mam argument that I hate Rugers is childish at best. I own over 10 rugers. How many Rugers do you own? Short list. 1) Take down lever missing detent, also so stiff pops out and across the room 2) Rusting slides 3) Magazine catch roll pin falls out causing mags to fall out 4) Ejector falls out, looks like ruger forgot retaining pin 5) Internally under spec magazines causing rounds to jam in mag body 6) Under spec barrel chambers causing spikes 7) Hammer Spring pivot pin works loss moving forward jamming mag in the gun 8) Cracking of polymer front section in area of recoil rod 9) Front metal frame rail shatters 10) Recoil spring guide rod self destructs. 11) 57Sicario Ruger 57 trigger bar I sent it to them 3x same issue 12) Sights fall off

Very good job jay.... Every review I've seen on the ruger 57 has been the same. You nailed it on the head when it came to understanding the real parts about the weapon. not a single review that I've seen has touched on the problems of the Ruger. now my opinion is that you never ever buy a first-generation gun because they always have problems. Give Ruger 1 year and they will fix that problem of the gun, because someone will drop it and hurt somebody or get killed.
