It amazes me how a company like Ruger can have the extensive product line they do, and still come out with homeruns like this. They find a void in the market and fill it. Ruger is a great firearm maker.
I m reading a book about Bill Ruger.. and has made me even more of a Ruger fan.. engineering genius, stickler for quality, innovative, an American firearm legend
I actually think this wouldnt be a bad pistol to carry while out and about on my ranch. We dont have hogs or large predators, I think the 5.7 round is plenty for coyotes and armadillos(they tear up our garden) and it would be a fun pistol for impromptu plinking sessions.
I'm sure this will help lower the price of the 5.7 X 28 mm ammo! Thank You Ruger! For those complaining about the price, it's $500 less than I paid for my FN. You should be rejoicing it's a hot little round!
I havnt seen ammo at price he talked about. I bought the federal stuff for my ps90 and that was still 27.50 for 50 (with my discount) but it was worth it. My fav round to shoot. If in general the price comes down and more companies start making 5.7 then this thing is going to take off
I could get a FN 5.7 pistol for just about $850 a few days before New year's day.. I'll think about the Ruger one.... It needs threaded barrel !!!! I'm betting on Ruger having a rifle or 2 out for 5.7 soon. I thought about getting the FN 5.7 for now I'm glad I didn't.
@@mattcrowell7945 I have always been a fan of the pistol rounds that can also be used in rifles like the .357 and .44. I always wondered why they did not have a 10mm option here since a 10mm is great as an anti personnel round and a med game hunting round. A 5.7 pistol / rifle would be a very nice combination also.
I saw the name and though "aw dang, i was hoping this was going to be a 5.7, but this is probably just an anniversary pistol or something, or the number of moving parts" boy was i pleasently surprized
Man, with such a small round, with such light recoil, they need to develop a subcompact with 13 to 16 round capacity once the defensive rounds are common. That’d sell real well.
Chris Canzanese Ah, that’s no good then. I wonder what the practical minimum barrel length would be for it. That explains why someone else hasn’t put one on the market already.
@@chriscanzanese5063 well... wide from front to back, but yea i get what you mean. The circumference of the grip is no different than any other pistol really.
Thanks Ruger. I fell in love with the 5.7 in the fn five seven model many years ago. I owned one in in 04 I believe and sold it in 06 when discharging from the military. I have wanted one ever since. I finally just picked up another about 2 weeks ago. I remember absolutely loving the way this thing shot. Glad to see this round becoming significant. You won't be disappointed when seeing it's TRUE capabilities.
There's basically no market for a 5.7 semi-auto rifle/PCC. From a varmint perspective 22 mag does a better job at significantly less cost, 5.56 is nearly impossible to beat for other applications. 5.7x28 only has real advantages in a handgun platform compared to other calibers on the market.
@@otm646 I mean, you could say the same for 9mm, but look at how many PCC's we have out there. If Ruger makes a PC57 or even a 10/57 Charger with a brace, I think that they could do pretty well.
Just when I think I'm done buying guns because I've got enough then they come out with something else so it looks like I'll never stop buying guns I think Ruger nailed it again. I'm a big Ruger fan and a Glock fan.
Picked one up today. Took it to the range... So happy with it. I highly recommend it. My 2 buddies that went shooting with me same day plan to buy one now 😎
Glad to hear it. Did you buy the 20 mag model? Can you say how feeding, ejection and magazine loading has been? I’ve seen some troubling reviews of the 20 load mags at Ruger Shop. I sure want one of these too, but not if there really are mag issues.
That looks fantastic. Once the "newness" wears off, sales become available, and quality/durability is proven, I'm in... Hope it is available in a rifle option as well...Ruger, CZ, Henry...
I like the round, despite the cost being still well above 9mm, and I like that Speer is developing a defensive round, as I carry Gold Dot short barrel .22 WMR in my PMR-30 and runs great.
The 5.7 was made for anti-personnel. Fast enough to punch soft armor, small enough to dump energy. If I recall correctly there was a fort shooting where a guy used the 5.7 and had high lethality, despite hitting things like arms and legs. The fragmentation caused too much bleeding.
Ken Wheeler he probably isn’t allowed to. They are factory prototypes and as such not likely up to par and possibly simply the shape and weight but not the correct composition. Until the mass, shape and metallurgy is correct I don’t think they will allow them to be filmed. (I’m guessing they will be way better but still substandard as far as 9mm compares.) I’m still interested in both the gun and caliber and also the newer ammunition available.
This is what I train with when my dad and I shoot. I have an FN 5.7 in the lockbox on my nightstand. Because of what you said- barely any recoil. I added a Sure Fire light and a Crimson Trace grip laser.
@@22plinkster You have just dumped the proverbial salt in the wound. Where do we sign up for said sponsorship? Just kidding you deserve it and have worked your tail off to get it. Love your videos
I’m not brand loyal to any company with any product being a specs and features guy but I do own several rugers based on this criteria and the ruger 57 will hopefully make it’s way into my safe or as my main carry .
Excellent video Sir!! I've always been a RUGER fan, owning many different models and calibers currently in my arsenal. This particular caliber had always seemed a bit exotic to me and not something I would have carried for personal defense; but, this video has changed my mind, given the new ammo options AND a new Ruger to carry?? YES SIR! Again, Thank You!
That’d be a Great Ranch pistol. I just hope the Gold Dot round isn’t too expensive. If Ruger makes it in a PCC with the same magazines they’ll have hit a Home Run.
For those wondering about the energy or stopping power of the 5.7, Paul Harrell offers a fairly comprehensive video comparing it with the .22TCM & 7.62 x 25.
Looks like an interesting firearm, and it’s nice to see another company tackle this incredible caliber! It would be hard-pressed that this gun would even come close to matching the FN versions quality and longevity, but we will see! Usually there’s a reason why guns are more expensive than other guns in the same caliber! But I can definitely see this ruger version appealing to a new crowd of gun enthusiasts!
No. The Glock 44 was designed to give Glock owners the opportunity to practice/train using ammo that cost less than 10 cents per round. They will sell a ton of them.
I just picked one these up, and the range would only sell 1 box of ammo @ $80. I almost told the dude to put it back in the case, but I've wanted a 5.7 for a while. I did find another of my other ammo spots selling it for $55. I won't be shooting this gun every trip to the range, and actually it feels a lot like my Kel Tec PMR 30 with little to no recoil at all. Pretty accurate right out of the box for my first shoot. I'll tighten my group when I get a lot more ammo. Cool gun all n all.
Just got the email announcement about this. I won't be running out to buy one but really nice to see Ruger making cool new stuff. With the .22lr LCP2 yesterday and this today I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
I'm a novice, and I appreciate the information. Seems reasonable for the money but I'm listening to what you're saying about the power of the round. Thank you
My thoughts are going to be that this thing is going to be hard as hell to find for the first little bit kinda like what happened with the PMR30 everyone is going to want one. On the plus side if this thing takes off like a expect it to, more company's might make ammo for it.
Solid review, dude. Covered all the basics and even a little slo-mo. One question though: does this have a mag drop safety like a lot of other Ruger handguns?
Glock numbers their firearms based on their own patent number, not a marketing name or basis. i.e. Glock model 17 was Glock's 17th patent that they sought from the US patent office.
I've been saying for years that glock should come out with their version of a five-seven!! I always thought that it would be an awesome idea that would be a highly sought after firearm. Ruger really was thinking outside the box and most people are going to go this route to get into the 5.7 game due to price vs. the FN version. I've always wanted an FN five-seven but couldn't bring myself to spend $1100-$1400 bucks on a pistol in this caliber knowing I could hey a hell of a rifle for the same price. But I'd certainly love to hey this ruger 57...Great video!!
Love watching these as a Aussie pistol owner. Alot of what you guys have, we drool over. Yep, we should've done "things" alot better years ago, but, here's hoping for a brighter future. I'm also running a gun range. Lots of young people showing interest. Here's hoping!
@@JWILSON1971 prices have came way down on 5.7 seen it for under 20 bucks for a 50 rd box lately .used to be like a buck a round .that's like 30 40 krag prices
Knowing Ruger, they'll make a subcompact version next year. That's what I'd love to see! I love my P90 and Five-seveN pistol. Speer releasing carry ammo in 5.7 is super exciting as well!
What exactly has Glock "got in on" in since their inception? Basically everything they made looks identical to the previous model, a few different caliber offerings. It takes them years to come out with a single stack model despite the masses screaming for it. Yeah, Glock is always ahead of the game. Lol
All their attention goes to dead calibers like 45 gap and 357 sig and rereleasing the g19 every 3 years like its something new. Doesn't leave them any room to try something that might take off.
seems cool but ammo is still expensive around here and online I can't find it for cheaper than $20/box. For that I can shoot 357 sig more inexpensively.
Super stoked for this and can't wait to get my hands on one out at the range day, SHOT Show 2020. I'm a huge fan of the round, and think this will help bring prices down.
I have a FN and I love it , in the 57 x 28 . I didn't know the ammo had come down to $14 a box of 50 . I'll have to check it out . I may have to get one of these Rugers ! Nice review .
The meat target is (say it with me kids) - 2 layers of denim, followed by pork ribs, our watermelon lung tissue, another layer of pork ribs, 2 more layers of demin followed by our high-tech fleece backstop :P
I'd ruger makes a carbine to compete itd be a winner. As a former ps90 owner while it's a phenomenal firearm it is pricey and the cmmg banshee is expensive as well. A mid price like say 750-900 carbine would be solid. A curved 50 rnd mag could prob be doable as well
picked one up by sheer luck about a month ago. Ammo right now is hard to come by. However, it is the most fun gun I've had in a long time. Excellent woods walk-about gun....
The 5.7 is a great modern version of the 22 Hornet! Would love to have a carbine chambered for it and soft nose bullets that are affordable. Thanks to Ruger for this pistol and that might become a reality!
Hmmmm sounds like you need an ole misdirection hey hunny going to the shop to get my handgun looked at come back same case but there’s a new prize inside
