A look at some handloads I did using a couple of pistol powders I had on hand, using the Hornady XTP. #bureauofpropaganda #brownells #hornady #45 #Colt #45Colt #handload #sixgun
1994, US Navy, handload for my Ruger Blackhawk, 5 5/8 barrel. 185 gn. Hard cast Lead Semi wadcutter. Starting load was 7.5 gn of Unique. End load was 11 gn of Unique. 2 inch groups.
Love Titegroup powder for pistol loads. Really liking that H110 for my .44magnum. That Accurate 5 looks like one heck of an accurate powder for that pistol. Funny seeing a reloading video from you today…got a reloading video I’m releasing tomorrow. Looking forward to the changed you plan on with that Ruger.
Accurate #5 is a really good powder. Not the best for less than a 5" barrel..... In my experience..... It does really decent in a 1894C 18.5" barrel but ballistics wise, it's not a "bolt of lightning" if you know what I mean..... I bet it would shine best in a in-between, those extremes. Honestly, I have never tried #5 in anything longer than a 5" pistol barrel besides the 1894c. Always decent groups though. It will always be in my kit. Good video. :)
Thanks! I’ve got some hard cast loaded with it I’ll be trying before long. It’s just what I had on hand until I can get ahold of some unique and/or 2400. I’ve got a few XTPs left, and recently got a chronograph, so I may load some up to shoot from my 1894 CB with 20” barrel.
Since this video, I also had cylinder throats reamed to .452. It made a little difference, but I think hard cast and finding the right powder and load weight thru trail and chronograph, I can tighten these up significantly.
It was just what I had on hand at the time. Magnum primers to my understanding are best used with slow burning powder and shooting down near zero degrees or lower temps in handguns, or with charges over 60 grains in rifle cartridges.. Me personally, I’ve loaded the exact same powder charges using both magnum and non magnum primers and haven’t noticed any difference in accuracy or velocity thru the chrono. My rule of thumb, I just use what I can find personally and it works for me.
