Ruger Mark IV: what I WISH I knew earlier…
Ruger's Mark 4 .22 caliber pistol is just the latest and indeed greatest iteration of the classic Ruger Standard, or Mark 1. These guns benefit from some excellent improvements over the originals, but as good as they are there are things prospective buyers need to know about. I'll tell you about all the things I wish I knew in this video, and you should learn from my mistakes. Give it a watch, and then let me know in the comments what sort of Mark 4 pistol you prefer: smaller, lighter and simpler, or do you like the long-barreled target guns better?

I bought the blued Mk IV 70th Anniversary addition in the commemorative box. Tapered 4.75" barrel with fixed sights. My favorite Mom & Pop gun shop had it so cheap I couldn't pass it up! It cycles everything--even the cheap Federal bulk. It has never had a stovepipe, failure to feed, or anything. It's the most reliable auto pistol I've ever owned.

A magazine disconnect is a terrible replacement for proper firearms training. Keep your finger off the trigger until you intend to discharge the firearm. Don't point it at anything you don't intend to destroy. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded and might somehow discharge. These are things I learned when I got my first *cap gun* as a kid. Once I had demonstrated the required discipline I got a bb gun. After a few years of no mishaps, I was allowed to shoot my grandpa's ruger mk2 under supervision. I still own that pistol. A magazine disconnect is a bad idea because most firearms don't have one. If you are conditioned to think that a firearm will prevent you from making mistakes they are more likely to happen when you are handling one that hasn't been- which is most of them.

Given there are people that think appendix carry is dangerous, carrying loaded is dangerous, and having no external thumb safety is dangerous... yeah, some people are afraid of guns and have no business being armed anyway.
@lifepolicy
@lifepolicy 2 месяца назад
It's not only a terrible replacement for proper firearms training I think it makes the guns even more unsafe. When I shoot competitions they always check the trigger pull first. How do they do that? Check if the gun is clear, point the gun in a safe direction, and pull with the scale. With the magazine disconnect that obviously doesn't work. They have to put a magazine in and that is exactly where a round might sneak itself into the chamber. However, since they point the gun in a safe direction nobody will get shot but hearing damage is a thing too.
@joelee2371
@joelee2371 2 месяца назад
The purpose of the magazine disconnect is to prevent the kind of accident that owner training doesn't fix, namely, when the incompetent, such as soldiers, cops, and kids get their hands on deadly weapons.

All wonderful points you bring up in this video. I have a stainless steel frame Target model with a 5.5 inch threaded barrel. It weighs more than a 1911 pistol. I love the way it's weight keeps you on target and the gun just "hangs" there when you shoot. It is also very quiet suppressed. The disconnector gets automatically removed with a VQ trigger which is a wonderful upgrade. I also change the extractor to a machined one as I find the OEM Ruger ones can cause stovepipe jams. Great guide for someone new to the MK IV!

All Mark IV's do not have metal frames. The lite series frames are polymer. Also some are aluminum alloy, some are carbon steel and some are stainless steel. All are good guns; you just need to know what is important to you weight vs durability.

"...ponderous in the hand..." "...astonishing..." "...tips the scale at...." What utter tripe. Are we that silly and weak? The stainless 5" bull barrel is among the most well balanced and steady shooting handguns on earth. It is the ONLY .22 handgun I have ever owned that could equal my 8" S&W Model 17 for 75 yard accuracy. That includes the Buckmark and Woodsman. If anyone thinks they are too heavy, go do some push-ups or something.
@SlavicCelery
@SlavicCelery 2 месяца назад
To be fair, if you primarily shoot poly framed pistols a near 60oz firearm is a lot to some people. Also, it's a .22lr, you're going to want to blow through a couple hundred rounds at the range. Most people don't hold a 3.75 weight out at arms length for an hour at a time.

i have a mk iv 22/45 lite. i made a new stiffer transfer bar, flat face trigger and a halo ring for it. i also drilled a hole for a screw infront of the trigger to add pretravel and a overtravel stop screw in the trigger. this made the trigger feel so short and crisp. it reminds me of the trigger on my browning x-bolt rifle. might remove the mag disconnect too just to get that little extra crispness.. i would say get a stiff machined transferbar for it, that was the biggest upgrade to the feel of the trigger, the original bar is a little too soft and has to "stretch" a little before it transfers the trigger pull wich makes it feel squishy. secondly a flatface triggerblade is nice since it allows you to interface with it further down on the blade wich in turn gives you more leverage, making it feel lighter on trigger without sear mods, wich is nice..

I have Volquartsen bolts in both of mine because they don’t feed well with Ruger from the factory bolts. Some magazines are consistently reliable and about half are not. I’m talking about CCI standard. With minimags they’re more reliable. I’ve polished the button ways, have extra power springs, and polished buttons which all make them better. New mags move in slow motion before these changes. Both my guns are 22/45 so maybe the feeding problems are purposeful to mimic a 1911. At least with the 1911 you can pay more up front to get a reliable gun or work the problems out eventually.

My two Mark IV .22/45s (one 4" suppressed, one with with a long Volquartsen barrel) are the best-shooting and most reliable rimfire handguns I've ever owned. I've had Mark I and III Rugers, High Standards, various revolvers, and others. If you REALLY need to shoot, you're not going to be using a .22 target pistol. They both also have a considerably better trigger than the other three Ruger .22 pistols (two-Mark Is and a Mark III) I've owned. Most importantly, they're VASTLY easier to disassemble and reassemble. That means they will DEFINITELY be better-maintained and tighter, NO ONE took the old ones apart until they stopped functioning. And yes, both of mine will cycle almost anything.

My Mark I with a 6" barrel does not have a bolt hold open on the last shot, and the mag release is on the bottom of the grip. I don't care, because it shoots great, and I bought it used for way less than $200. I don't need adjustable triggers, polymer frames, fluted barrels, laser sights, custom grips, and want not to shoot decently with a .22. It challenges me to work on my proper handing than being lazy relying on accessories to do all the work.

If you cannot hold out 53 ounces, you probably should not be shooting that gun in the first place you should switch back to plastic BB guns. Holy smokes. The complaints about this gun are ridiculous. All the predecessors suck in comparison,

My dad had a Mark II. As a kid, I really liked the gun (thought it looked cool), but as an adult who has shot several other guns, I'm no longer a fan. Others have commented on assembly/disassembly, so I won't spend too much time there, but yeah, it's a PITA. However, what really turned me off with the Mark II is the angle at which the handle meets the frame. IMHO, it doesn't point naturally; it points a low, until you correct with the sights. Close your eyes, take a proper grip on the Mark II, then open your eyes and see where it's pointing. I can almost guarantee you'll be fairly low. Do the same thing with a modern tactical handgun, and you'll be much closer to on-target. No idea if the Mark IV has the same issue, but even if they fixed that, the magazine disconnect would be a deal-breaker for me, anyway.

Had I, II then Ruger sided with the Government on the AWB because many of their models had standard 5 or 10 round magazines. Sold my entire collection and will never own a Ruger no matter how they improve things.

I don't like them. Browning Buckmarks are much better.

Well, I had four Brownings. They all went back to the factory because they constantly malfunctioned. Browning was great. They took each one back and worked on it three times and three times I sent it back and on the fourth time they gave me a new gun so that 16 times, my brownie went back to the factory. I had enough and bought the Ruger mark four. After 20,000 rounds I had to replace the firing pin which I received from Ruger with instructions on how to install it. No cost. I never dry fire so the gun just broke. Right now I have about 30,000 rounds out of my mark four. It is still a very tight action if I use Oil that is too heavy it will it will not fit together correctly. I have to use the thinest gun oil possible then it works like a charm. It is that tight that’s after 30,000 rounds. How accurate is it? I can consistently put six rounds in a group that you could cover with a dime at 25 yards. That is pretty good. I personally don’t believe that a 22 long rifle is adequate enough for self-defense. The extra weight of this pistol makes it a heck of a lot easier to shoot and the trigger is about a 2 pound trigger pull. I could never ask for a better 22 long rifle. Not to mention how easy it is to take down and clean. I don’t believe I will ever wear it out. All the complaints that you make are very similar to someone who only does bitching about anything and everything and it’s just a plain bellyacher. Browning 22 was reported to be a very good gun, but after going back to the factory 16 times or more I think I’ve run out of patience with that gun for different ones for different brand new ones.

All you karens who want to honk on the guy for mispelling one word, go waste someone else's time. I can spell as well as anyone and better than some, but I don't belittle anyone about it. Show a little class.
