If you didn't see the video before I sent it to Ruger, link is below. Unfortunately due to it being a firearm and time frame I had (with trust in Ruger) with the rifle a refund isn't plausible only way is to sell it is privately or trade it in to a pawn or gun shop but I wouldn't do that to the next person as they would still have this issue and it's not fair in my opinion so I'm not going to do that. Instead I showed how to fix the issue which will apply to the Ruger American as well....they definitely should not call this a precision rifle by any stretch with the tolerance issues....hope you guys enjoyed the video as I don't put up with the BS from anyone or brand...the videos I make are 100% truthful and honest whether people like it or not, my findings have been backed up by several industry leaders in several markets and my own co workers, who we are some of the best engineers in automation industry that solve complex problems daily...Thanks for watching as always....ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OwT0o8F8Src.htmlsi=b0onLQG75UMneRUB

Seems to me you are binding between the bolt face and the barrel chamber. Check the bolt face and barrel chamber for a burr. If you are binding at the bolt face and chamber it will likely kick the rear of the bolt off to the side. The rim on rimfire ammo also varies in thickness. Especially with lower end ammo. Your headspace could be too tight for the rim thickness on the ammo you are using. Something else that could possibly be contributing to it is the barrel nut is torqued to tight.. Barrel nut torque, head spacing can not only screw with accuracy, but also function. Just by watching the video it looked like you was putting more effort into locking the bolt down than you should need to. Raising the bolt up a little is taking the pressure of whatever is binding and why the bolt doesn’t kick out in the back. Removing the barrel and putting a thin shim between the barrel and receiver would likely fix the issue. Polishing the front of the bolt and barrel would likely do it as well. Not saying that’s for sure it. But it’s likely..

One word: JBWeld. Make a small mound where the bolt meets the chassis, then whittle it down to where it has to be. Or, put a dab on the chassis, cover it with plastic wrap and close the bolt while the JB sets up. (If you're like me, you'll find a way without involving Ruger.) Which reminds me... the magazine slop... I didn't like losing sight of my RPR at the range, so a bug up my butt got me to paint the chassis. Interesting how three coats of spray paint eliminated the slop.

First off, your ammo needs to be match grade. I can hit sub MOA with my RPR 22LR shooting with wolf match grade ammo. And what scope are you using? A good friend of mine can hit a Gnats ass at 50 yards every time. Maybe it not the arrow, it's the Indian?

I have bought a few Ruger rifles, never found them to be anything to crow about in terms of accuracy or trigger pull. For any rifle I buy that is a "production" gun I figure that I am on my own, you have to tune the weapon yourself, address the flaws that contribute to lack of accuracy. It is an adventure and be aware there are limits to how much accuracy you can squeeze out of a production gun. I have always enjoyed very high accuracy with Savage and Marlin rifles, Ruger cannot hold a candle to the way these competitive brands shoot and that said even though I had cheap production models of .22 WMR and .17 HMR.

James, if there is a decent Gunsmith close by, it should be easy work for him to build up the surface of the bolt handle that you're having to shim, and then work it back down to proper tolerance. I'm sure that you've likely considered this... You may know a good tig welder that could handle the welding and then you could handle the fitting... Believe me, I know how Ruger is with situations just like this one! Back in the 80s, I bought one of their new stainless Mark II Target pistols, with the 5 1/2 in. bull barrel, adj. target sights. Didn't take long to run into a failure to eject problem that was chronic across all brands of .22lr ammo that I had on hand. Examining the bore and chamber with a bore light, I could see that the front 1/3 of the chamber had not been cut and finished! It was rough and deeper than the rest of the finished chamber and that was what was causing the chronic extraction failures! I spent a lot of time explaining all of this to Ruger both on the phone and in a letter that I included with the pistol when I sent it back for "warranty repair"... After several weeks, I received the pistol. Ruger installed a new extractor and extractor spring... The pistol continued to provide chronic extraction failures and the chamber condition remained... I've said it before and I'll continue to say this, After Willian Ruger passed away, and his son took over the company, this has been an on-going problem that William Ruger would never have allowed to happen. Like dropping the original model 77 rifles, what fools move that was! But, greed and stupidity is the new rule of the day in many American businesses these days...

IMO, the bolt issue is easily fixed by Ruger by rotating the bolt handle attachment point X.XX degrees so when it seats on the receiver, the fire pin is then at the 12:00 position. But spending money on tooling changes isn’t likely to happen when they’re "value engineering" the product. Cost savings trumps accuracy, customer satisfaction and future sales. It’s increasingly difficult for manufacturers to hide their known quality issues when social media points them out repeatedly. For everyone who watches these very objective videos, I’m sure there are a lot of people (like myself) who are dissuaded from spending our money on a product with known deficiencies. My brother has this gun and I was considering getting one for myself…until now! Instead, I’m now upgrading the 4X scope on my Marlin Glenfield Model 60 that I bought in 1976, and see how she shoots.

I too can attest to the 15 round magazine having more slop. If your going into competition with this thing, only use the 10 round magazine as that will keep the cartridge more closely aligned to the chamber. On bolt slop... after watching this last night, I just HAD to get my RPR out and check it over (as though I haven't the last half dozen years!). Anyway, I didn't have a lot of bolt slop, but got to tinkering and discovered the bolt release lever, when pushed, jiggled the bolt a little. So Curious Me got to wondering if that might be what's causing your grief. Check 'er out. I find it interesting that a few people have had problems with their RPRs. I've been shooting mine about 4K rounds a year for nearly six years and it just keeps getting better and better. Now that I've gone blind in my right eye, that rifle will take up the slack from the right hand shooters (due to custom stocks) and get more rounds. Surprises me that I have to learn to shoot all anew at my age. Life is S-T-R-A-N-G-E! Quite the adventure. Anyway, happy shooting.

I was thinking instead of using a piece of zip tie why don’t you solder something more permanent and attach a piece of blued metal so that it holds permanently instead of just gluing a piece of zip tie. Soldering on a small piece of blue metal would be a more reliable backstop to prevent your bolt from going any further than where you want it to be.

Just wanted to offer you information. I too have searched for a solution to this problem. In the end your idea kinda works...but this is my findings. The issue is that the bolt rotates too far to the right and is not level or faced propperly...the problem is all in the firing pin. The rear is sharp. It holds on spring and rotates bolt. Fix... clean up rear of firing pin and polish. It doesn't have to be flat just smooth. No burrs. Also polish spring ends with 1500 grit paper. Lube and reassemble. Bolt then uses guide intended to keep it straight and level. foot note giving you credit in pointing out problem. It prompted me to dig deeper. Thank you.

They have a design problem there. The design is decent but not for their mass production techniques and quality control. It should have been designed such that there is no way to get it wrong. Notice that some other companies use a button that slides in the slot behind the bolt handle? Anshutz is one and the new CZ uses a big rectangular guide. I wonder why you couldn't attach something that does the same?
