No exaggerating, but this is the BEST suppressor review on youtube PERIOD! Does all calibers, shows him shooting with and without ear protection, no music and no commentary during shooting. No fluff talk in between. Quick transitions to give the viewer the most holistic experience so they can make a good judgement. please keep them coming! Bravo!
I love this channel! You have award winning content and the knowledge you bring to all of us is priceless! In other news, my form 4 was just approved and waiting on my FDE Obsidian 45 now! Super excited!!!
I just received my stamp and picked up my Obsidian 45 last weekend. It works perfectly. I used it on my Scorpion EVO3 pistol with Rugged’s fixed barrel spacer and the 9mm end cap. My neighbor thought I was shooting a pellet gun. That right there tells you how well it works. The suppression with subsonic ammunition is just simply amazing. Now, for Rugged’s customer service. They are also amazing. I had seen that on other reviews, which is part of the reason why I went with the Obsidian 45. My first time using it, a bullet barely struck the 9mm end cap. It did not damage the baffles or the tube. I believe it was my fault, as the cap that tightens the piston into the suppressor was not completely tightened down. I discovered that it stuck a little on the piston, so although I thought it was tightened, it had a little to go. That slight play resulted in the bullet striking the end cap. After contacting Rugged, they sent me a new end cap, spring, and piston cap (the one that was sticking on the piston) free of charge within two days. Bottom line, their customer service is amazing and they stand behind their products. 5 stars all of the way around. For the product and the quality.
Hey I just wanted to let you know (as I own one myself) I spoke to a rep at Rugged and he told me to keep the 45 end cap on the suppressor, not to swap to 9mm when shooting 9mm. There have been reports of end cap strikes with 9mm ammo when doing that. FYI
thanks for including 45, 9mm, and 22 pistol and rifle in this video. Really helps get an idea how it sounds across all the typical platforms. After 5 months I just picked up AAC TiRant, but these new products from Rugged, Sig, and DA would have made it a difficult choice a few months ago. Hopefully more mount options in future for these new Cans
CAN confirm. Still rated quietest 45 supp. Came here to see if he could give me some pointers on taking it apart. Very stiff before first use. Can't get some of the baffles apart. Operator manual says use hex key but the thought of marring something I waited waaaay too long to take home, has me hesitant...and he didn't break it apart on camera...probably because he struggled too. Edit: I used the end of a hard plastic kitchen stirring spoon and a rubber mallet for the really difficult ones.
Thank you for this review, I have a CZ P-09 Duty suppressor-ready coming in this week, and your video helped me a lot in understanding this suppressor. I will order it, and now that I have a much better understanding of it, can't wait to get it!!!
Excellent review!!! This review stands out for the range tests in 45 ACP, 9 mm and 22 LR in both short & long configurations including dry and wet. Well done!
This is probably the nicest looking (and sounding) suppressor that I've seen, I kind of wish that I bought this over my Octane 45HD ...it's just beautiful
FYI!! The coating on the production models have changed. All of the production Obsidians have a Cerakote piston housing and the main tube and module body are hard coat anodized. I emailed Rugged and that is the response I got.
Rugged by far has one of the best customer service. Own a obsidian 45 and got an end cap strike on my last visit to the range and they sent me a replacement within a few days. Just for that I ended up getting the 556 and 762/30cal cans from them. Would love to see what they brings to the world in the future!
I’m so glad to hear this as I’m watching a really old video , that you had an awesome experience with the customer service !! That alone I’m going to purchase this suppressor.
Just got done viewing your video demonstration and am so excited. Going to look into what Legal steps I need to do to be able to buy some for my pistols and rifles.
can you do a video of this one using it on a Glock 20?? this is the one I'm really looking at getting for the 10mm.. would like to see how she does with her.. keep up the good work!!
My obsidian 45 tax stamp finally arrived!! ATF cashed my check on April 13. Just around 8 months. I can not imagine how long the wait will be for those who submitted a form 4 after 41P.
question. what does wet mean? obviously theres liquid some where in the gun cuz i can see if dripping off his hand. whats the liquid? where is it? and is it common to do it? pros and cons? can you do it with all suppressors?
Do you think the cans that come apart to clean are any better than the contained units? talk is they last longer but the old units I've seen keep on trucking with little maintenance in fact self cleaning for the most part?
What is your preferred 45 ammo for shooting suppressed? I recently got my octane 45 and it has a lot of blowback with 45 and virtually none with 9mm. My cases with 9mm are super clean though so I'm thinking it's just bad ammo selection in the 45 ammo
I shot my Staccato P in K config with Win 147 JHP. It was very quiet, and so much nicer to shoot than with my Glocks. It is full in full config, but so much more enjoyable in K, and still VERY effective. I have to admit it is fiddly to reassemble.
165 grain 9mm through a Staccato P with RMR black threaded DLC barrel steel frame with an Obsidian 9, Erector 9 and TiRant 9 will make you cream in your pants brother
I’m still looking for a .45 silencer I have the rugged obsidian 9 on efile with an Erector 9 as well but what would be the quietest can on a 1911, HK45C and MK23 rugged obsidian 45? I know it’s an older video but I’m still rocking my TiRant 9 & 45 so it must be quieter than those or have a better tone which the Tirant was hard to beat for years and a lot of people still can’t do it. This is a sincere question so no sarcasm please and thanks in advance to anyone who will help
Does it not matter if the baffles in the extension aren’t lined up with the ready of the can since you can’t lock them in together other than simply screwing it back on?
if i have the 3 lug adapter setup will the suppressor still tilt. I bought this suppressor mainly for my cz scorpion which is a fixed barrel and i am not sure if the 3 lug adaptor still allows for tilt. I dont want to damage my can the first time i go shooting with it!
I am absolutely new to suppressors. Watching this video, it means that buying one 45 caliber obsidian suppressor would also be good enough for all my other calibers (10mm, 9mm, and 22lr)?
I'm having problems figuring out which baffles go where, on one of the baffles it says number 1. I can't figure out if I have the correct baffles in the long configuration mode.
I'm assuming the keyholes from the long section don't need to align with the keyholes from the shorter section? If they do, I can't figure out how to do it.
What get this showing in video or looking at omega 45k to banish 45 to this one 40sw to 45 acp to 6.5 creedmoor any advice thanks video great and helpful
I was looking into this can and stumbled upon a Reddit thread about o-rings getting torn up from simply putting on and taking it off. Now I don’t have any experience with cans but that sounds a little odd . Is that a thing? Do you have to replace an o-ring inside the piston every time you thread it on and off?
What’s the difference between “wet” and “dry”? I just thought it was about the humidity, but it looks like you’re shooting on the same day for all shots.
Awesome video, wonder what kind of ammo was used for the 9mm. I tried this with my cz scorpion w 115 9mm with the full size can and it was pretty loud still
Hush ammo is supposed to be designed for suppressors extremely fast burning powder makes it very fast and clean burning sound quality I can't comment on my obsidian is still in atf jail but I'm definitely going to get a box of hush 45acp and 9mm if mine comes through alright I think I'll make it my dedicated suppression ammo clean quiet and the price was comparable to other decent ammo we shall see
I think you might've convinced me on this Product! Now, I do have a question. I am looking at this suppressor for an Gen 3 Glock 17. Does anybody have any recommendations on threaded barrels? I have been looking at KKM, but I want some other opinions as well...
Just paid off on one! Just waiting to get the paperwork rolling. Sigh, probably October before I can take it home. Buying this over silencerworx one for my FN FNX-45 Tac and will add a 9mm spacer for my M9A3.
@@Kballs yeah, why I broke for this one over the Silencerco’s one even though it’s $200 more. The modularity and versatility is one, the other one is simply how quiet this is and that’s the biggest reason. .45 is made for a suppressor and so noise is a huge reason why I’m willing to pay $200 more for this one!
Just got this one home! Two months early…And I’m glad I got this one cause I now also have the FN 510 and the rugged fits that like a glove too. Now to get my 9mm spacer for my M9A3.
I'm curious to know how this silencer compares to the Griffin Armament Revolution 45 with a similar run-through of hosts. Any chance you would be able to shed some light on that? I know the Obsidian is a little longer which ,sans a baffle or two more but I'm just wondering how the a 9mm host would compare from this can to the Revolution 45
Hudson McCall I realize this is from 3 years ago but for anyone else reading, it is rated for subsonic 300 Blackout. I believe minimum barrel length is 7.5" or 8.5". I think 308 might be too much for it.
I do with my Obsidian 9. It sucks to clean it, but it’s incredibly quiet. I have a Dead Air Odessa 9 coming that i’ll probably use mostly as a 22lr can. I’ve always thought that 22lr cans were the quietest.
+R Kelley Wait for the Ghost-M my child lol, that way you can compare both. Trust me, I got the Octane 45 HD last June (love it) and now I'm seeing the new offerings from Rugged and Dead Air.
+Kris Kassens I almost snagged a Ti-Rant 45M in mid 2015 but i couldn't convince myself to buy a AAC product since hearing about the company is being run into the ground by Freedom Group (which is ruining Remington).
I agree. I heard AAC changed ownership, so a lot of the talent behind AAC has left. Not sure what kind of availability or quality mounts and accessories will have in the future. Both Dead Air and Rugged are new companies but years of experience in the business before SilencerCo changed management. These Cans make it hard to consider other companies YHM or Thompson machine for a 45 Can. Check out the Liberty Cosmic...223/556 or 45acp! Same with the SiCo Hybrid too pistol or rifle Can
Either a very small amount of liquid or gel can be added to absorb sound. (DB Foam)is one product. Many use a gel product called wire pulling gel or ablative gel.
I want to know the exact same thing. I just finally got my Tirant 45 and it is fucking awesome. Im dying to know what they sound like compared to each other.
I have a TiRant too. The TiRant has a piston that is 2x the size and weight. And, the baffles are not all coated, some are bare T6-6061 aluminum, and only one is stainless steel. The Obsidian M, and Dead Air Ghost M are similar to TiRant, but improved. The real shocker is the new Sig 45 can. Low price, comes with two pistons, and more compact design. Not modular though.
Being that I have a Dead Air Sandman S in jail, I want to keep the modular pistol can in the Dead Air family so to speak. That said, this Rugged Obsidian sounds great on the video. If you wouldn't mind, I have a few questions. Which sounded better to your ear? Ghost long, wet, wiped, or Obsidian long, wet? Which sounds better on a 9mm AR SBR? Do both come apart easy when fouled? Thanks for all of the awesome reviews.
I'm in the same position you are in. I have a Sandman s locked up myself and was thinking of getting the ghost also. Now I think this might be the one! Gotta put in some extra hours now!
+mario serna Wet is quieter because an ablative media such as water, pulling gel, or oil is inserted in the suppressor, absorbing heat, and thereby reducing flash and sound.
+NFA Review Channel cool. Thanks for answering my question. I just ordered this bad boy last night. I was planning on getting a dedicated rimfire can but if that doesn't happen before the new ATF rules kick in, I might be ok with throwing the obsidian on my 10/22.
Watched someone duel-weilding FNX45 Tacticals. One with the obsidian and one with the ghost, and to me it seems the Obsidian is quieter. The Ghost had a little bit of a higher crack to it, where the Obsididan just had the deeper tone to be expected. Both guns were firing 230 gr projectiles
If you’re finding it hard to pull the trigger on one, I think it’s x10 the fun. I told myself I’d just get a pistol can and a rifle can. Now I’m waiting on my 2nd rifle and my 2nd pistol can. It’s addictive. You will ask yourself why did I wait so long?
