Ruideng's HD35 & LD35 USB (35 Watts vs. their HD25 & HD25 @ 25 Watts models) can be found for $12USish each) test loads make excellent add-ons for this incredible UM34C of theirs. I am all set to grab one of their TC66C USB Type C meter also. I have to add that the adjustment knobs you use in this video are much more comfortable then Ruideng's model with it's little tiny multi-turn potentiometer knob sticking-out from a weird location that can be a bit difficult to grab and stay ahold of. This combo helped me discover that both make/models of power strips (I must confess to cheaping-out on these two pairs of power strips that I had purchased from two different vendors) with alleged "2 (or 4) USB Charger Ports @ 2.4 Amps added" went below the 4.75V minimum USB Power Specification right around 1A, with only the one test charger port having any load. This is the main reason that I bought the two gizmos in fact. I found it better to use the app instead of Bluetooth settings to get it paired and stay paired.

Paul, at the end of the video, it seemed to be showing .56A on the cell phone and .26 A on the device. Am I misreading things?
@SimpleEnough2k9
@SimpleEnough2k9 6 лет назад
Good observation Rick. If I'm not mistaken, when the device displays "graticules" like this, the device is actually presenting the trends of the elements, in this case Volts and Amps, over a given period of time. The values seen in the corners could represent the MIN & MAX of the respective measurements. That would probably be my best bet since even the voltage reading was off too.

I'm impressed, that is a lot in a very small package. I built a custom VoltCurrPwr meter and logger to a microSD (wish this did logging). Built a custom PCB for this project. Maybe I'll do a video on it.

What is the app called and is a free fully functioning app to be found?

I have to admit, I'm a bit confused here, mainly because of Banggood's provided information. Following the link you had in your description, we're lead to the Banggood site. So far so good. While browsing the details, the link where we could get the app and documentation was provided. I copied and pasted the provided link and to my great surprise, I was lead to the UM25C documentation, not the UM34C. (I know, it's not your fault.) Wanting to know more, I downloaded the MS word document. Surprisingly, the information in the documentation leaded me to AliExpress, not Banggood. After all, there is nothing preventing a manufacturer from selling his stuff via different channels, so I decided to take a peek at the description provided on the AliExpress site. Sure enough, there was a link to download the Android app there too, however it was different from the one I saw on Banggood. I checked it and found out that AliExpress's link it actually pointing to the UM34C app and not the UM25C. Perhaps Banggood forgot to update the link. Looking at your phone's screen, we see UM34C, so I was curious to know which link you used to get your app knowing that the Banggood's one isn't the good one. Thanks for the review.

I downloaded the app grom the card in the box. It was a mediafire address.
@SimpleEnough2k9
@SimpleEnough2k9 6 лет назад
Both Banggood and AliExpress have links in the mediafire.com domain although the directories where they are pointing to are different. Banggood has "/folder/q2b8h079hpywq/UM34" which in fact points to an UM25C directory while AliExpress's link is "/folder/5c877rc21tp1p/UM34" which is really the UM34C Android app v1.0.3. People will need to pay attention to the documentation file (.pdf) in the UM34C directory since the download link in the document itself is the same as provided by Banggood, which is for the UM25C and not the UM34C.

There are hundreds of clones of this online, especially on Amazon. Are they the same quality, or junk? How do you know if one is a Ruideng if the clones all look the same?

@etow8034
@etow8034 5 лет назад
Should brown out at 4.5V for the UM24/UM34 and 4.0V for the UM25. Its better to get both the UM24 and TC64 which will cost the same as a UM25. For most the accuracy of the UM25 is not needed.

It's not really new. I had um25c for a while now..which had Bluetooth and USB c. The difference is only the usb 3 in out. Fyi! They are great meters though. I think I have as many of those as multimeters! I'm sure you will start collecting those soon too! Also, fyi...those have a wide input voltage range. You can get usb to alligator clip and use it for many things...not just usb stuffs...

Nice overview Paul, thanks sir! I rate these USB tools and have the previous (Blue skinned) model, which followed the Green version that I missed... 🤢 🤬 I would go for this but the Bluetooth only works with Android and I happen to be an Apple fanboy (old git actually!)... 🧐 Incidentally, I think the prices you gave us are for the non-Bluetooth version, which are less than the with version... 🤔 🐍
@SimpleEnough2k9
@SimpleEnough2k9 6 лет назад
If you need the Green version (UM24C), check on Aliexpress. In fact they have the 24,25 & 34 models. I'm referring you to AliExpress for the only reason that the documentation I downloaded via the link provided by Banggood, "Factory technical support and conctact way .docx" actually refers to manufacturer store on AliExpress. BTW, AliExpress provides a proper link to download the app for the UM34C whereas Banggood link redirect us to the files for the UM25C, despite their link states it's UM34.

If we wear our Sherlock Holmes investigation suit we could potentially conclude the following : [UM] could stand for "USB Meter", the [2] or [3] could probably refer to "USB 2.0" or "USB 3.0", the only thing I can think of as for now for the [4] is the fact that the device has 4 USB ports, but this is only a guess. Finally, the [C] is somehow a bit more obvious, it would indicate the presence of the bluetooth communication board on the device. Keep in mind that this is only my personal deductions, nothing official. Now I'm taking of my suit ! ;-)

why, why someone wants to install app on android from random file-sharing place? Spy at least, and who known what this thing may do later? there is no info on privacy, security, and permissions. If device required app to get full control, it's a red flag. And if there is no iOS version, it's very good sing to not touch it at all.
@learnelectronics
@learnelectronics 6 лет назад
You know, the app is not required.
@SimpleEnough2k9
@SimpleEnough2k9 6 лет назад
I understand your concerns about installing apps via alternative or "non official" sources. Under the actual circumstances, I wouldn't be so much concerned about it. Actually, distributing apps via the "Play Store" or "Apple Store" doesn't mean that they will be more secure. Simply look at the permissions the Facebook app is asking for ; putting your phone on a bench at the park, unlocking it next to a glowing "Take what you want !" sign, would pretty much look as safe to me ! It pretty much covers your "red flag" concern, doesn't it ? The UM34C app is asking for the "Phone" and "Storage" permissions. I disabled the "Phone" one and only kept the "Storage" one to save the "*.xls" file and everything is fine. If you're still concerned that the app you're using might spy on you, simply use the app in Airplane mode, so nothing leaves your cell. Beside that option, considering that quite a few devices these days can be controled via Bluetooth of Wifi, so why not invest on a small tablet, dedicated to experiments ? The overall problem here isn't really the security but how the people are using their phone. The real purpose of a phone is to make calls, not to store your personnal information, credit cards and all the data you want to keep "safe". Speaking of safe, are you absolutely sure that your data is safe when stored on a cloud ? You'll probably run like a chicken without a head if you find out the truth about it, believe me ! Distributing apps via alternative paths is not unique. Some UNI-T devices can be connected via Bluetooth but their app isn't available on Apple Store nor Play Store. Does this mean that Uni-Trend app is suspicious because the manufacturer is using a different distribution platform ? Loto-Quebec, in Canada, can't use Play Store to distribute their app because the Play Store regulations does not authorize games of chance and gambling apps although they allow crappy applications filled with invasive advertisements, go figure ! Saying that because it's not available on IOS it's a good sign to not touch the app at all is almost saying than any platform other than Apple is worthless. I'm sorry but Apple screwed enough people as of now therefore I'm not considering them as a reference whatsoever ! If there is an alternative to IOS, I'll be glad to take it !
