It's so cool that it almost seems like a shame to then just have an iPad stuck on top like that! Maybeeee…maybe if they hooked the iPad up to a mini-projector and projected the FaceTime call onto the back of a translucent mask (with purposely vague features so it didn't distort the guest's face too much)?

These look great! I would add a couple of techniques to complete the look: 1. missing stuff: sometimes stuff just goes missing... those paracord thingies on the staps? lose one of them! 2. cut some stitches: these look weathered but all the sewing and stitches are still new! get a stitch cutter cut a few stitches here and there (but secure with a dab of superglue so it doesn't come undone).
@galli0
@galli0 2 года назад
And then you could stitch it down again with some more over the top stitching to make it look like it was hastily fixed 😁

This is so funny to me, because as a part CGI artist, I’m learning that the way to make things more realistic is to add defects. Captain disillusion also said “the crumbier something is filmed, the more realistic it looks.“ I just think it’s so interesting that that’s true in physical movie props as well. :-)

@markfergerson2145
@markfergerson2145 2 года назад
On military strapping the metal bits may be hard to remove without cutting stitches (they are designed not to come apart, mostly). But as another person mentioned those stitches can be redone to make them look like hasty repairs.

Tape. For webgear like the straps, loose ends get taped up with electrical tape or duct tape and then abused and frayed. A wrap of tape between the frayed end and the rest of the strap is common to keep a worn strap in service. You might tape the right side straps with red electrical tape (and then weather), especially if Right and Left is hard to tell at a glance. Apply tape after the washing, but before the beating and dirt. Paint and wipe, especially on duct tape to beat down the shine and muddle the color.

6:00 - Get a coffee can. Throw in a handful of gravel or maybe some spare nuts and bolts. Throw in the metal parts you want to weather. Close it up. Roll it around on the floor for a few minutes. Or push it down the stairs (hopefully it won't come open when it hits the bottom) once or twice. I've also put it in the trunk of my car and driven around for a few days.

That tip about a trace of green in rust is one of my pet peeves in movie props. Being blue collar all my life I know that rust comes in many colors and shades depending on the alloy and what it was exposed to. Getting the color right tells part of the prop's life story. Most people who aren't blue collar might not be able to decipher it exactly but will subconsciously know that it looks right.

Can you share where you found those exact straps? They match the ones used on the Afterlife hero prop and the stitch pattern at the top doesn’t match original LC-1 or LC-2 straps at all so it appears to be unique to new repros that I’m struggling to source for my project.

1:48 needs a meme or loop or something 🤣 What do you recommend for the frame? (Should i tie it to the back of my car at a lopsided angle so it flips and laterally rotates as its being dragged down the street? I think I'd get a citation for that...) 🤔 Also what would be a safer at home blowtorch substitute?

Loads of fun. I would love to hear a more detailed rationale for some particular choices, assuming there is one. LIke "I burned it here because the wand goes right next to this spot, and I imagined the hot wand might burn the strap here." I'm always daunted by the storytelling aspect of weathering. (Not that I get to make a lot of props).

I have mad respect for Bill, Adam Savage, Frank Ippolito and many others, but when it comes to weathering I stick with my own methods. This result is far from good mainly because weathering synthetic materials like nylon is painful. It looks either new or it's falling apart and paint easily rubs off it. I make only heavily weathered stuff so I avoid synthetic materials. Old Bri'ish military pouches and harness' are made out of pure heavy cotton and are much easier to work with. When you apply some of shown techniques to those you will get much better results.
@punishedprops

@@punishedprops Definitely. Making stuff is not about following precise instructions, but about adapting techniques for your own use. I don't use plastic or foam as the main material, because I don't like fragile costumes or props. If I would drop my costume from a 2nd floor of a building, nothing would happen to it, but I watch your videos because you never know where you might hear good tip.
