You should use the collar over the ball joint and use it below the ball joint to make sure the ball joint doesn’t slip down

And the collar on the sliding bar it meant to be a stop so you can't slide the stone too far out and come off the end of them.

I cut different lengths of plastic drinking straws and slide one on the rear support rod at the very bottom of the where the post and the casting meet. Drop the ball guide down to the top of the straw and set the lock screw Different lengths of straw can be cut for any angle you want. Mark the degrees on the straws for fast setup. Makes a great companion set for speedy angle setting. No more tape or Sharpie marking. Excellent review of this tool. I like mine, and would recommend it to anyone. ✌

That sounded like a great idea at first... But thinking about it, the final angle will depend a lot on the width of the knife blade. In other words, with the vertical height set with one of your straws the stone will sit at a different angle on a narrow knife blade from a fatter one where the edge is much further out from the jaws of the clamp.
@vladant2427

Sorry, but if width of the blade different, you gonna get wrong angle.

@@andyp926 In that case you could just have different straws per knife instead. You're typically not going to be changing the angle of a knife edge all that often, if ever, so you'd probably only need one per knife.

Steve, I noticed you said that the stone clamp has a stop to stop the stone at the blade. However the stop you left on the top of your vertical rod is in the wrong place. Put it between the stone and the vinyl ball. If the clamp strikes the blade it will booger the blade. One stop on the forstroke another on the backstroke.

FYI Anybody, I found If you put a small piece of Rubber like a piece of rubber band in the hole of the Tightening screw that holds the angle rod with the plastic ball with the hole in it , The rubber inside will press against the Steel Rod AND you will be able to finger tighten the thumb screw With out using pliers and it will hold in place and won't move . But all ways double check every so often....
@IamDoogy
@IamDoogy 2 года назад
That's a nice, simple modification to better tighten the angle adjustment. Also, I noticed elsewhere that there was a collar to protect against OVER-TRAVEL when pushing the sharpening stone. The collar, when adjusted properly, will hit the nylon ball before the blade contacts the bracket near the handle.

This video & a couple of others saved me spending £249 GBP today as I was going to pull the plug on a "Edge Pro Apex 4" but didn't particularly like the fact you had to physically hold the knife as there was no clamp, when I used the supplied link here I couldn't believe how stupidly affordable this system is compared to it's competition so I bought one & bought all those extra diamond sharpeners so cheers :-)

The locking part you put at the end of both of the rods should only be used at the end of the horizontal rod that is connected to the stones. The vertical rod with the hand tightening peace to set the angle should have the other locking peace set under neath it. Once this is done you can set the angle and tighten by hand and then use the Allen key to tighten and lock it in place while also acting as a memory set.
@robertbrandywine

You are correct, the photo in the owner's manual definitely shows that clamp below the thumb knob and nothing on the top of the rod.

You guessed the blade angle. You should use a protractor app in ur cell phone to digitally measure the correct grinding angle. ie 17 degrees. Plus collar on vertical mast should go under the ball collar to lock in the grinding angle then you don't need to lock the ball collar with pliers.

Most junk sharpener I have ever used in the last 16 years that I buy, use, and sharpen knives. The angle of the knive on top is different than when it is flipped over by several degrees, depending on the knife I have seen up to 9 degrees difference from side to side, = complete junk. Sure one can go ahead and start modifying the jaws to get the same angle in both sides. but why should one do that in a product that is new? Sure it can sharpen, anything you pout to a fixed angle and grind it properly it will sharpen. That said, this sharpener can only be good when someone removes the knife to sharpen the other side, rather than flipping it over, 6-9 degrees difference from side to side, is a HUGE offset in sharpening.

@Steve Jordan - Try setting the (essentially useless) top collar lock under the pivoting head, so when you loosen the head to reposition the knife, the collar cannot slide down, keeping its height position constant between blade turns. 👍🏻‍

To properly use this sharpener and get the exact, correct angle on both sides you to use a digital level bix or your smartphone using a Level/Degree app. For example, I wanted a 20-degree angle on my bevel, so I used an app on my phone and got the correct 20 degrees. All good BUT, but When you turn the knife over 9 times out of 10 you will get a different angle, mine was off 6 Degrees from one side to the next, creating a different slant on one side than the other. To fix this you have to tighten or loosen the screws on the other side of the blade holder until you get the same degree as the other side. I know this may sound trivial to you but if you do not do this, 9 times out of 10 you will screw up the bevel of your edge on one side. FYI. ;)

So far in my opinion, you have the perfect combo: the support, and the diamond stones. I use my cell phone as a multiclinometer as well, as keeping the edge "in the middle", makes the difference and ain´t alway easy. Having a source of light in a proper angle to my point of view is almost convinient.

Nice one, mate. You might actually want to adjust a couple of things on your routine with this sharpener. The clamp on top of the vertical bar does nothing there. Remove it and put it on the horizontal one, between the stone and the teflon ball. The other one is alright where it is. Now the tip. With both lose, put the edge of the stone closer to your hand the further it can go on the knife and tight the clamp there, then pull the stone to the edge and clamp the far one. Now you have a movement limited to the length of the stone, and you won't risk the edge hitting it with the side of the stone or the guard on the carrier.

PSA: make sure you tighten the screw on the BACKSIDE of the knife clamp. It's the screw that holds the end cap for the spring. After doing 2 knives, that end cap suddenly, and violently went flubber inside my desk space area. Luckily no animals were harmed in the R&D phase of learning the tool. Anyway, I put mine back together with thread lock(lock tight), and check it before I start so it won't happen again.

The independent collar stop on vertical rod (top of vertical rod in your video) can be placed under the angle adjustment stop to be used as a stone thickness adjuster. 1) Place independent collar stop between base wing-nut and bottom of angle adjustment stop. 2) Set angle with stone in place, then remove stone and hold sandwiched between two vertical rod collar stops, tighten lower collar stop to set. 3) When moving to different stone, loosen upper stop, place new stone between those two stops and tighten upper collar stop. Sharpening angle will then be set to what it was on initial stone. Move through progression of stones during sharpening and sharpening angle with be consistent, independent of varying thickness differences of stones. Leave bottom collar stop in original location untill starting a new sharpening progression. The diagram you showed near end of video illustrated that second vertical collar stop in location I have described, but maybe the manual does not explain how to use that second collar stop as a variable stone thickness adjuster adjuster. I do this same (variable stone thickness adjustment) in my Edge Pro using a simple drill bit collar stop addition. Currently all your stones may be the same thickness (plus/minus minimal varience), however at some point you will most likely have stones of varying thicknesses that you want to use during a sharpening progression. Regards,

Nice video my friend. I ordered the exact same thing (from China) and I had to do a modification or two to get it right. I kept tightening the handle piece that slips on the base plate that hold the stones. I finally drilled through the bar and that problem is fixed. Also if you want to do a good job you will notice that when you switch sides on blade, the angle changes so you really need to watch out for that and often reset the angle when you flip. I bought a little electronic level that is magnetized and I always check the angle before starting on each side. Takes a little longer but it is worth it. I have achieved great results with this tool and do not hesitate to recommend it. For this price you cannot find better,,,not even close. I did all my knives, friends and relatives knives as well. Depending on metal hardness I do a refresh about once a month at 600 grit and up. Every day common knives I stop at 1000 grit and go to 3000 on more expensive knives I sometimes go to 5000 grit on my Miyabi that has a 62 rockwell core the finish looks like glass.

Good vid. Thanks. I also have this sharpening set and agree the knurled wheel doesn't allow the input of enough torque to effectively grip the post. However, I simple switched this for the allen-head screw that holds the back collar on the stone rod. There's no particular reason why that needs to be done up particularly tight - it's only there to stop the rod slipping out of the swivel fixing and there's no great pressure on that axis.

This video showed me how NOT to use this sharpener. The stones are wet stones and should be wetted with a cloth after a few moves on the knife to remove metal particulates. The collar on top goes under the swivel guide as a stop so that if the swivel guide is removed, the stop under it maintains the sharpening angle of the stone. There is no need to remove the stone assembly when turning over the knife. Move the assembly onto the table. The collar on the back of the slide should go between the stone and the ball swivel as a stop to prevent the stone clamp from hitting and damaging the knife edge.The Other than that, great video.

Good instructional video, but you did not sharpen a pocket knife. I would like to see a pocket knife sharpened in this, because my read of it is that the clamp that holds the knife is too wide for the length of a pocket knife blade. And is too deep, so the edge of be sharpened would not stick out enough from the edge of the clamp so the stone can run along the edge at the correct angle. If someone out there has sharpened pocket knives with one of these, i would love to hear how you went. I really like the look of these, but don't want to waste my money if it does not suit my requirements.

It appears you’ve never seen actually “really good” sharpening stones. These are rubbish. And, the grit level stops at 1200, which just isn’t high enough. As I recall, for another small fortune, you can get a higher grit set, which I suspect are equally inferior. For the type of sharpening mechanism, it is the sturdiest I’ve encountered. Keep in mind, you’re going to have to really torque down the stops or they’ll break free and slide, potentially wasting all the effort you’ve already invested.

I've been told when sharpening a knife like this you should start from the bottom of the blade near the handle and work your way up to the point of the blade in a zip zag motion while only sharpening the blade in the up direction so it'll be sharpen up than reset back down than sharpening up again than reset back down repeat to end of blade, should never be sharpening down on a blade

That is far from being ideal. The problem is in reproducing the EXACT angle for each successive sharpening. My own modification provides a fine thread screw adjusted vertical, in conjunction with a digital angle meter. The correct angle for each knife is written or engraved ON each knife so it can be re-set to .001 degrees on each occasion. Knife placement is provided by placing high power neodymium magnets under the base plate. Clamping the knife with screws is way too much trouble. If you were to see my version you would not mess around with the stock version you promote in this video. Final edge should be one wipe in each direction on newspaper - nothing else. Longer diamond hones up to 3000 grit would be a great improvement, but so far as i know they're not made.

You should probably read, and follow ALL of the instructions if you're going to create an instructional video. Are you supposed to use the stones dry? Are you supposed to just kinda guess at the angle you're setting the apparatus up for/to? Are you supposed to leave the stone in contact with the blade during forward AND backwards stroke? All of these questions are answered in the instructions. You should really check them out.

Everyone complains about the thumb screw. Just put the little collar at the top of the post under the slide collar. Problem solved.

I would protect my hand with some thing when you flip the blade, some people would make a dangerous thing of it, as they do not have experience, like you.

This is not a good video on many fronts: He does not help at all with grit selection. He does not calibrate the angle (the MOST challenging part of using this product) of the sharpener. The video is too slow at times. ... and more

I only review tools I buy for use in my workshop and for my hobbies. I don't do reviews on anything I don't use. Or anything that is inferior. If you don't like reviews just don't watch them.

I just got my ruxin kit and I am having trouble getting the whetstone to stay in position on the spring loaded bar. It seems the spring might be too weak. These are the cheap stones that come with the kit. Will the diamond stones work better?

thank you for this bolt switch out. I'm still having trouble getting the proper angle

I read that when you flip the knife with that mechanism, it actually changes the angle slightly… have you found that to be true? I’m only a few minutes in so forgive me if you answered this in the video

Is it necessary to remove the sharpening mechanism from the fixture each time you need to flip the knife? Can't it be just lifted up or swung all the way to the side?
@BryanTorok

That looks like it would work, particularly for pocket knives.

I was thinking the same thing. I find nearing the end of the sharpening process I like to flip the blade more and more to help get rid of the wire edge.

Did you measure the angle on BOTH sides of the blade when you flip it over? The one I got was a full 8 Degrees off.

Could you replace all the screws that you have to use a wrench on with wingscrews, except for the screws that clamp the knife blade? The Ruixin Pro looks very rigid, which appears to do a very professional job..

I see know reason why you would take the rod out to flip the knife. Its not at all necessary. At least not for me.

You don't have much experience with knife sharpeners. Maybe you do but you certainly aren't good at it. 600 Grit doesn't make a knife "sharp" it roughs it up when the knife is badly damage . 1000 grit sharpens it and 5000 grit polishes and finishes it
