Rule 86: Indirect Statement

If you want to read ancient works of Latin, you need to understand the concept of indirect statement - when the author reports speech in an indirect way. Latin will put the subject of the indirect speech into the accusative case, and the action will be an infinitive. Any subordinate clause in indirect speech puts its verb in the subjunctive mood. This video explores this idea in a very basic way, and the videos that follow in the 91 Rules series will go more in depth with indirect discourse (oratio obliqua).

I want to thank you for all of these videos. They are great!! I am 68 and have been resurrecting my high school Latin. I have been using your videos in my studies. I just finished the chapter 25 in Wheelock for Infinitives and Indirect Statements. This video came at just the right time!! Thanks again.

So, I passed Latin 3. I have no clue how, but I ended up with a B last year. And im not stupid enough to take AP Latin 4 (there is no regular latin 4) so I'll like to just say thank you for making it possible for me to pass latin 1-3. This is farewell, The suffering has finally ended

Sorry to hear that you’re done with Latin, but you should feel proud about your B in Latin 3! Good luck this year, pup.

Another way to think about it is this: Instead of "I think that he is alive," You can say "I think him to be alive." Where him is obviously accusative, and "to be" is the infinitive.

Spero vos omnes liberatum esse de metu Latini. Prosit! (actually I'm unsure what the accusative plural should be for "vos omnes" I'm sure someone will point out a correction eventually)

This, I believe, should be: spero vos omnes liberatos esse de metu Latini. The ending of the PPP 'liberatus' must agree in case, number and gender with 'vos', which here is accusative, plural and (generic) masculine. Since the PPP follows the same pattern of endings as 1st and 2nd declension nouns, the correct form is 'liberatos'. Although, I believe that the verb 'liberare' can be used with an ablative of separation without a preposition, so the following would also work: spero vos omnes liberatos esse metu Latini. I hope that you have all been freed from the fear of Latin.
