The native Britonnic tribes were conquered many times by various powers, like Normans, Anglo-Saxons, and before that - the Romans. The Romans were the only ones who left, yet the native peoples don't celebrate an independence day and don't hold a grudge against the Italians today..
Fun fact: this song was written to unite the peoples of the kingdoms into one movement to strike back at ongoing raids the British coast was suffering. Although, at the time, the British fleet did exist and had a fearsome reputation, the British coast was largely undefended, the Mediterranean was rather lawless, and slavers and pirates swarmed the British coast. In response to huge numbers of Britons being stolen into slavery in North Africa and the eastern Mediterranean, Britain revitalised it's fleet, established new standards for warships (introducing the "rate" system to describe warship types and their roles), and put forth a patriotic call for the Isles' inhabitants to join this increased force. This song was written as part of that patriotic recruitment campaign. And it succeeded! In short order, slavers no longer posed a threat to British coastal settlements (and other European nations on the North Sea also enjoyed the reprieve, with several likewise conducting a coastal naval fleet revitalisation, including Holland and France), piracy was reduced, and the trade with the British overseas colonies was fairly safe on the final legs of their voyages home. This in turn established the economic and maritime capabilities necessary for Britain to become the dominant global powerhouse of the 18th and 19th Centuries. This is also why there is such a strong reference to antislavery in the song - this was the catchcry to unite the nation from the previous three kingdoms!
Slavery coming from Africa and the Middle East doesn't fit the woke agenda that white people created slavery. Unfortunately the colonial powers reignited the slave trade when exploration of the America's began after the European continent had been free of slavery since Roman times. Granted, they had other unjust systems, but nothing compared to the slavery that existed in the Western Hemisphere. Somebody had to be the original sellers of slaves.
can I have a source for that? I cant find anything on any raids in 1740 on the coast and besides that the song was written at least 10 years after the golden age of piracy.

We would of been fine if we weren't colonised, also their a factor of why modern India is still a bit poor and corrupted (that and the modern indians). There are many great stories of Hindu Maharajas, some kind Mughals and Sikh Maharanis, all abolished cuz of Britain

The Brits have seen the potential resources India could offer and the internal conflicts going on, and took the chance and kicked everyone's butts.....and ruled India for more than 2 centuries.... If we were united back then, they won't have the chance to conquer us at all.... I am telling you now, India would have been a subcontinent of multiple countries today If the Brits didn't colonise India....they did it for their own benefit, I agree, but it gave us a common enemy to unite against.... Whenever I see all the decay and hatred of my country by the people living in its fair land I listen to this song to remind me of everything this nation of people has achieved. Rule Britannia the sun will rise again and never set on Great Britain.

Just after the Falklands War, there was a ship called the MV Norland, a ferry taken up for the duration of the war by the MOD, and it was used to transport POWs back. When she slipped from Argentina on the way to back to pick up another load to return, the ship's crew sounded the horn three times, hoisted the red ensign on the jack and played this over the tannoy system on the outer decks This angered the Argentine government and greatly amused everyone else

Argentina is regional power and British is global power. British have much more stronger economic, military and influential to the world. Falkland island is very close to Argentina but very far away from mainland UK. British fought the Falkland war 80000 km away from UK but finally British win and Argentina defeated. Great film. The Zulu wars were another period of pretty dark British Imperialism according to the history I have read. And Pve Hook was actually a teetotal staunch Methodist I believe.
When this song was written (1714) Britain had not YET begun to "rule the waves" It appears that this was more or less a song of encouragement for the British mariners (Pep-song?) The British were hard-pressed against the Dutch during 4 Anglo-Dutch wars (1652-1784) and the centuries of the Anglo-French Wars (1109 - 1815) During the Napoleonic Wars; the individual kingdoms of the Netherlands were on both sides of the Napoleonic wars (depending upon who controlled the territory in question) The French/Spanish navy was a formidable force during most of the Napoleonic Wars, until after the Battle of Trafalgar, 21 October 1805.
