Have you ever wondered: How big should my moves be? Should they be wide or should they be narrow?
Today I want to tell you the RULES so you can EQ with confidence.
In this video, I layout how I think about the size of my EQ moves to create clear, full, professional sounding mixes.
(By the way... the EQ in GarageBand is AWESOME.)

So helpful, as usual Colin. So many people ignore GarageBand. It is the only DAW I use and it is great to have someone like you concentrate your videos on just GarageBand. Thanks

Thanks for this great video. Loved to see how you have identified and cut the resonance frequencies of the guitar. You are helping us greatly to go ahead on this learning curve.

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed! I am working on my first serious project and getting the eq on my vocals is the only thing I need to tweak. "As little as you can - as much as you need" is the best advice I have received concerning this so far! I have watched those videos about making small cuts, but it wasn't working with me. I thought I needed to purchase a mic I really can't afford. Maybe I still do, but it is freeing to know that I can make rather large cuts if I need! I am hoping this sealed the deal for me! Thanks!

I just shared this with our volunteer sound engineers at church. This is great content that lays out excellent general rules about EQ. Though this is mixing for Garageband, I think the concepts transfer well to live sound as well. Thank you, Colin!

These are the most informative videos I've found on this software, this has been my go to channel since I started using garage band 6 months ago, always a goldmine of great info! Thank you again Colin!!!!! 🙌

Great video, Colin, one your best, you really nail the how and why. I took your (paid and excellent) EQ course and this video is a timely reminder to revisit it. Funnily enough, I always have Angel Colin on my shoulder saying, "Small changes only...small changes only!" Now I see that I must've missed the point somewhere along the way or forgotten the bigger picture and, in fact, biggish cuts are ok (when made in the correct context)! Thank you. Great song, btw. And woof to Chunk, dog bless.

The only thing I'd kind of add in is that even with virtual instruments you might get resonances in a full mix. For example sometimes a frequency in my bass mixes with something in my cymbal and together that frequency stands out, but each instrument itself sounds fine.

Colin, if the source will be panned in the mix, should I center it before applying EQ? Also, you showed once how to quickly zero out the pan, but I can't find it. Is it a keyboard command? Thanks.

Do you generally have EQ both before and after a compressor or one or the other? On some sources compressors can make quite a big tonal difference particularly when changing attack and release time.

@TheBandGuide 2 года назад
Great question! I nearly always have my EQ before compression. Sometimes I'll EQ after compression if I still feel like it needs it. And on some sources (mostly vocals), I might set my compression first but then put my EQ before the compressor when I'm setting it

How to make a normal vocal aggresive...is it the Person's preformance or can EQ & Compression help...?. Love INDIA 🙏.

It DEFINITELY helps if it’s aggressive. But EQ and intense compression can help
