Rum Runner | Tropical Drink Essentials

After being asked to get rid of some older bottles of liquor, legendary bartender "Tiki John" of the Holiday Isle Tiki bar ended up creating Florida's signature cocktail, the Rum Runner. Now there are many versions of this cocktail, but to me, the original is still the best.

Ingredients:
1 oz. orange juice
1 oz. pineapple juice
Dash of grenadine
1 oz. light rum
1 oz. blackberry liqueur
1 oz. banana liqueur
1 oz. dark rum
Instructions: Combine orange juice, pineapple juice, grenadine, light rum, blackberry liqueur and banana liqueur in shaker with ice. Shake till chilled, and pour into glass with fresh ice. Top with dark rum.

I feel like Myers is my go to for casual cocktail nights or in cases where I'm making for a larger group of people. So in that case, I'd definitely say in top 2 up there with Plantation Dark. For something a little more upscale, I like to use Hamiliton Pot Still Black Jamaican or Smith and Cross. Lot more funk in those! I've used DeKuyper before too, not great. I don't use banana liqueur too often, and to be honest, I don't even remember how I ended up with 99 Bananas lol. I'd give Drillaud Banana Liqueur a try though some time. I've gotten their Apricot and Peach liqueurs before, and I thought they were quite good for the money!

This is the original Rum Runner, at least as far as I can tell! lol. Definitely a little sweet than a traditional tiki drink, but still delicious! Let me know what you think!

I wouldn't say "horribly" sweet, but it definitely is on the sweeter side. I think it depends what you use for the banana/blackberry liqueurs, as some can be sweeter than others. Definitely classify this as a tropical cocktail! I'll have to try it with some lime juice next time, just keeping with the original recipe for this video! :-) Thanks for taking the time to comment!

@@TikiDrinksatHome thats true. but most of thos liqueurs are probably 'cremes' which are very sweet. the beach bum berry recipe actually uses 40ml of lime juice and no fruit juice for this cocktail

I believe the Beachbum Berry recipe is "tweaked" to be a little more balanced and let the rums come through, and is not the original recipe. The original cocktail was created in Florida, which is what is referenced in this video. Might make a second video with the Beachbum Berry version in the near future as I'm interested to try it out!
