I love this guy to many keto people are trying to make keto a elitist grass fed middle class hobby when this could transform farming over time and transform the lives of millions of working class people.
Exactly! I cringe when I see obviously middle-class keto/carnivore influencers pushing grass-fed (and a host of expensive supplements and products) with seemingly no self-awareness of their fortunate position. It's also funny to me how this parallels the DIY van-conversion videos. It used to be that living in a van was a matter of necessity and making-do. But if you watch some van-conversion videos nowadays, you'll be amazed at how spoiled these kids are. (I'm in the position of the guy Ballerstedt talked about--cooking my 80/20 in an iron skillet on a butane stove in my van.)
Thank you for presenting the other side to the “grass fed” push in the Keto community. I too, am enjoying the Ketogenic diet and it’s many benefits! Our family has been in the beef business for 4 generations. We love our cows and our lifestyle.....but in the end, it’s a business. We only want the best for our cows while they are in our care.
Isn't "grass-fed/grass-finnished" code for "not fed GMO-corn or GMO-soy"? Would it make more sense to label beef "contains no glyphosate" or label the omega3/omega6 fatty acid profile? Do we know if estrogen-impacting-soy chemicals in soy feed show up in the meats sold for human consumption?
And do they still use ractopamine in CAFO cattle and other animals prior to slaughter?...which causes a myriad of terrifying and cruel side effects including at times death, but is given to animals to increase muscle quickly before slaughter for profit? And what about the people who experience racing/pounding heartbeat from eating that contaminated meat according to data from the European Food Safety Authority? And what about all the OTHER drugs given to these animals? I wouldn't eat CAFO animals if my life depended on it out of principle...and I'm no vegan. I am almost entirely carnivore. You truly are what you eat.
Thanks for this video, which gave a more positive perspective to conventional farming, and people who wants to follow a ketogenic diet should not be stopped by the financial barrier of not being able to afford to consume only grass fed ruminants. Eating grass fed animals is ideal, but it should be secondary to the primary goal of achieving the optimal blood glucose, which will have a global powerful impacts on one's health.
Thank you for taking the added stress of having to use only grassfed animals. Yes, in a perfect world that would be great, however availability is scarce and VERY expensive. I agree that the VERY heavy emphasis on this topic could be defeating our health perspective. I love Dr. Ken Berry on this topic also. He says do the best you can. I stock up on sales. I had 4 kids to feed. I can't afford to feel guilty that they didn't grow up on grassfed meat. They did eat real homemade food, however. I think that's where we need to place the emphasis.
Bret - the master of asking the tough questions in a collegial manner. Question about the carbon footprint - how much of the 5% that plant production is responsible for is being grown for the animal food industry, and how much for humans?
I am a retired senior who lives under the poverty level on a fixed income. I read the judgmental keto perfectionists preach how we must only consume grass fed or pasture raised meat regardless of the price. Right, so I go to the food pantry and request grass fed beef. Well that dog don't hunt. Be real.
What gets me is the fact that grass fed grass finished should be the cheapest beef you can buy. I went to a cattel auction with a friend who bought 4 cows total weight 2400lbs for a little over $600 total and they were all just grass fed.
It looks like Peter Ballerstedt has been whipped to stay in line with the present agricultural practices. This is unfortunate. He should just stick to his old message of "ruminant revolution" without any "buts"!
Entirely too much straw-man (no pun intended) and cherry picking here - in addition to the pretense of having superior science when really they only have a test subject that is more convenient ethically and economically to work with. If he want us to have better science, then let him bring the money to do the more complete and ethical research. But that won't happen, will it? I'm not against meat eating but I am against people who are supporting the meat industry cooking their facts to make vegetarians/vegans sound stupid or deceitful. I support both kinds of Keto and it is pointless to try and argue over which is better when every body is different. If these people want to bring _more_ information to the table, I don't have a problem with that, but they seem to always want to invalidate the information that we already have. Save it.
I'd love to have a conversation on this topics but in Colombia. We don't seem to have the industrial cattle problem but agriculture is taking over and cow farming is losing popularity which is frightening.
Many people who argue that we're gonna need more food resources since the world pop. is going to increase dramatically in near future and a plant based diet is the solution for that forget the fact that it takes a lot less animal food as opposed to plant food to feed a person. Anyone who tried keto would approve this. On the other hand, the whole agenda of plant based dieters is based on the premise of eating in abundance which would mean more land for agriculture. How is more agriculture help the environment and a growing population?
They do not farm, the have no idea what they are talking about. I challenge any of them to be sustenance farmers. We spend hours every week in our garden and there is no way even we can produce enough ourselves to feed ourselves year round. If everyone had to grow their own vegetables, you see fewer vegans.
There's far to big a gap between the consumer, and the producer for understanding. This comment could be true for just about every product in our day and age.
Peter. You are amazing. My dad was an agricultural engineer in Mexico and I would have loved to discuss with him the solution to end diabetes and world hunger.
I’m still waiting for horse meat to become easily accessible in the rest of the world. It’s commonly eaten in Europe and Japan, it’s absolutely delicious as tartare, wayyy better than beef.
It's cultural and so will not change. There are places in the world where dogs & cats are eaten, but that's not going to happen in the U.S. Here we have a far different cultural relationship regarding horse. Here if a rumor spread claiming a restaurant served horse meat, it would be put out of business.
I expect in 10 years humans will kill off bad bacteria though out our food chain including our own. Step one is identifying exactly how each type of bacteria works and what it does. The future is bright!
What a fantastic insight into the truth behind how cattle is raised and a sobering fresh honest unbiased look at the cattle industry. DD, would you please listen and learn from this and start promoting this truth behind the treatment of the majority of cattle? Be a proponent of Dr. Ballerstedt's information? Our carnivore, low carb, tribe needs to stay unified and consistent.
I am sorry... but this man seems a little removed from reality here and there. Is he payed by the grain fed meat industry? Even talking around liver irregularities in grain fed animals. Or defending the animals standing on a poststamp with that they are herd animals... Vegan atletes to be an abnormality - without researching how they get complete protein. It just continues, this does more harm then good.
