This video is your ultimate guide for how to fully run Final Cut Pro X from an external hard drive and how to move your projects, events and library. Allowing you to save storage on your Mac and edit your FCP library on different computers! First, what hard drive is best for this? Technically you can use any hard drive, having said that, it is best to get a hard drive with as much storage as possible that is also as fast as possible, all while not breaking the bank. A simple 4tb Hard drive like this is a great place to start, as it strikes a good balance between these attributes. Has plenty of storage for it’s size, uses USB 3 so in reasonably fast and costs around 100 dollars. Of course for maximum performance a portable SSD like the Samsung’s T5 drives are an excellent option. Now that you have your hard drive let’s prep it for final cut pro x. Like with any new hard drive it good to erase it before use, removing any factory data that is added. To do this open disk utility, select your hard drive and click on erase. Rename it, for example FCPX External, format as MAC OS Extended Journaled and select erase. This will only take a second, there we go the hard drive it now ready. Next let’s launch Final Cut Pro X. First, on the left of the screen you can the see list of Libraries, in my case we see the local library, as the name implies this library is stored on my Mac’s internal drive. Now we are going to create a new library for the external drive. To do this, under file select new, then library. From here we can choose the location for this new library, in this case we will choose our external drive. And let’s rename this to External, to make this easy to differentiate, then Press save. We have now created a new final cut library on our external drive. As you can see this appears listed on the left along with our local library. To confirm that all is correctly setup, go to file, then library properties. Find the Storage locations tab and click on Modify settings. A drop down menu will appear, and you want the storage locations of Media and Cache to be set at “In Library” (on the external drive), motion content can remain on the local drive as this takes up very little space and finally backups are currently set to be stored on the local drive, however can also be moved to the external drive to further save space on your local drive, in my case I am going to do this. Then press ok to save changes. Now that your library is all setup and ready, I am going to show you have to access it next time you launch final cut. First make sure your drive in connected then open final cut. Under file, select open library, other and select this specific file from the external hard drive. Let’s test this by importing some footage. As you can see the footage is displayed in our event under the external library. Let’s create a new project, we can now move the footage to the timeline and edit completely off the external hard drive. Finally, I am going to show you where and how this data is stored on the external drive. If we open a new finder window and select the external drive, you will see one file named External, this file represents the new final cut library. To access it, right click and select show package contents. Be careful not to move or rename any files, as this will damage the library (however viewing them is fine). In this event file you can see folders for Analysis files, Projects, Original media and Render files. In fact inside the Original media folder you will find the clip we just imported. Thus showing that the new Final Cut Pro library is running and completely stored on the external drive. Allowing you to save storage on you local drive.

I wish there was a LOVE click for this video!! THANK YOU! After attempting a move/copy following the apple support youtube channel instructions - What a mess! Thank goodness for FCP experts like You! This video is so informative, yet very easy to follow. I have multiple external drives. One external drive is faulty but unfortunately has most of the media needed for my new project. I was able to copy everything to a New Library in a different external drive beautifully. Only 2 missing files afterwards, but I was able to easily relink them. As an ultimate test - I closed the original library and completely ejected the faulty drive that housed the original media and Voila! My new library was still intact with all of the copied media! THANK YOU!! 😊

Thanks for the tutorial! One small remark, since at the beginning you speak about formatting the external drive and say to format it HFS Extended-Journaled - especially (but not only) if you work with external SSDs. Above macOS Mojave or later, Apple recommends to use the APFS format. Thanks and keep doing what you're doing!

I'm a bit confused by this. If I copy or move a library, doesn't that automatically move the events and projects within that library too ? You seem to show events and projects as separate things to move, but they are part of the library surely ? And also, you say here when choosing library settings in the inspector, i should save in Library, but in another tutorial you say save it to the external drive ? I basically want to move a project I'm editing from mac to external drive, keeping it all exactly as it was in the timeline. Thanks.

I can continue working on the project there til I finish...and if I screw something up, I still have the original that I was working on stored on the Mac (albeit without all the new progress...but at least Im not starting all the way over..)?

To do this, in FCP click: File, Open Library, Other, Locate, then select your external drive and double click the library file (purple icon with four stars). Alternatively you can locate the same file in finder directly and double click it to automatically launch FCP. Let me know if you have any further questions!

is it alright to do this with 90 days FCP Trial as long as I know I will continue with purchase before 90 days are over. am I going to lose my projects that I already completed or am working on
@DionMedia

Hi Alamgir, I have no experience with this as when I bought my Final Cut Pro a free trial was not possible. My best guess would be that your projects will not be lost, but that you will not be able to contact them (which is not very different from losing them).

hi! thank you so much for this video, super helpful. I have looked into this and it doesn't seem like I can find the answer anywhere but maybe here... Have you ever experienced moving a project to an existing library (both open) and nothing seemingly happening after you hit ok? The project stays where it is and the other library doesn't have the expected project in it. The first time I did it, I got a totally new copy of the library on my hard drive. My hard drive permissions say "custom access" with no options to change that, and my hard drive has 60 gb available on it. Thank you so much!

Oh, and the first time when it created a whole new library on my hard drive, that has just created more problems I think, taking up more space on hard drive and maybe splitting my media across the two libraries (I tried to dump the new library but it said my original project is using contents in that new library!), so that method does not work. I'm at a loss and just wondering if ANYONE has seen this.

I did as excatly as you show. However even though it plays back perfectly from internel drive, when i edit from external drive frames drop and doesn’t playback properly. Shoul change my ext drive to ssd?

@@ilkergur7003 Hi Ilker, thanks for your question. SSDs, due to their higher read/write speeds will provide better performance compared to HHDs. However there are many factors that can impact performance, especially if you are using an older Mac. My suggestion would be to first try implement the tips shown in this video of mine: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BehhyY2Se0I.html If after this, you are still experiencing dropped frames an SSD may help. I am actually currently working on a video about the Samsung T5 SSD, I go into more details in the video, but for now, the SSD seems to perform very well with my 2016 MacBook Pro. Let me know if you have any further questions!

okay so i was following along with the steps and obviously when we are at the part that says “erase”, it implies things will be erased. i didn’t realize it would completely wipe my whole hard drive of footage i already had in there. did this happen with anyone else?? and how can i recover it?? thanks! anything will help.

Handy video! Can you please tell me why it's important to format to Mac OS Journaled? What's the difference if I format to AFPS? And how to store all of my plugins to an external drive? I own a 256 GB mac, and my plugins are more than 50 GB. I wouldn't like to bury my computer with just plugins.
@DionMedia
@DionMedia 3 года назад
Hi, thanks for your comment! According to Apple support, both Mac OS Journaled and APFS formats are supported by Mac OS. Mac OS Journaled is recommended for external hard disk drives (HHDs) while APFS is recommended for external solid state drives (SSDs). In regards to plugins, to store them on your external drive you need to copy the ‘Motion Templates’ folder from your Mac (usually stored in the Movies folder in Finder) to your external drive. Then in Final Cut, under Library properties, re-link the Motion Content folder (since the location of the Motion Templates folder has moved). Let me know if you have any questions!

@@DionMedia Thanks for the fast replay! I wasn't expecting that :D. Now one more question(or two). Are the plugins the same as the effects and LUTs? I'm new with FCP, and I'm still trying to set it up. Because my SSD is tiny, I want to store everything externally. Is that possible, and if it is, how? If you have any more tutorials, please about that please post them here. I'm new to all of this, and I'm not really sure where and what to look for.
@DionMedia
@DionMedia 3 года назад
@@voozd Glad to help! :) LUTS are stored in the library folder (not as easy to access) but can be accessed by opening a finder window, in the menu bar click on Go then Go to Folder and paste: ~/Library/Application Support/ProApps - however I do not suggest moving or changing this folder as it has to stay in place for FCP to run. With FCP what takes up most storage is; footage, render files, motion content (plugins), projects, events and library. Storing and running all of these off the external drive will keep all the largest files off your Mac. Let me know if you have any further questions!

Can you run FCPX plugins from an external hard drive if you don't want them taking up space on your internal drive? I'm concerned about plugins slowly filling up my macbook hard drive even if I'm running libraries off externals.
@DionMedia
@DionMedia 2 года назад
Hi Abner, thanks for the question. I have not tried this, but I would not worry too much. I use over 20 plugins and run them on my local drive without any problem
@DionMedia
@DionMedia 2 года назад
and to add, the biggest storage is always taken up by footage, so there an external drive might be useful

So if I wanted to edit with my templates on another laptop would it be on my ext hard drive or would it just be on the laptop itself…?????
@DionMedia
@DionMedia 2 года назад
Hi, just to clarify, if you mean with templates, motion templates, then the answer is yes if you edit from a new or other hard drive as the motion templates will still be available on your laptop. Hope this helps
