I'll say it again, Germany's revenge towards the US for WWII is Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes. Ironic that General Motor's Hummer, made for battlefield and the perils of a Walmart parking lot alike, could not defeat them at the repair front! And India's revenge against English rule? Tata buys Jaguar! Cherrio!
I had a co worker who brought a new Atlas the first year of introduction. That vehicle stayed in the shop every couple of months. The only thing that saved her was the vehicle was still under warranty.
Funny you bring up the Giulia. My friend bought one last year and I sh*t you not, it started having break downs at under 10k miles. By the time he got to 15k miles he had 4 separate engine and transmission issues. It was so bad that he hired a lawyer and successfully got rid of the thing via Minnesota Lemon Law. You want to take a guess what he bought after he got a full refund? Another Giulia (his logic was that he got unlucky with the first one. Granted, the second one lasted until 17k miles before the car went into limp mode and he had to wait a month before the dealer would look at it. Lucky for him, he still kept his old Acura, which was still running well with 250k+ miles. The limp mode issue was "fixed" a month or two ago and so far nothing new has happened, but I know there will be another issue with it soon.
One of my neighbors has a BMW X5 sitting in his driveway. He’s been trying to get it to run for about six weeks. He’s had friends come over, experts etc. no one can get it to work. I told him yesterday he should sell it for parts. I was being serious and he actually thought it was a good idea. BMWs are garbage.
As a Touareg owner, I’m saddened by the Atlas. They dropped the ball hard. Touareg is an incredible vehicle, the Atlas was supposed to replace it, but it failed miserably. People are leaving VW for American and Japanese versions.
Agreed.. I have a 2016 VW Touareg VR6 Lux. Such a solid piece of workmanship truly a shame they no longer import those. To give some credit, the first gen Touareg had lots of problems but were very reliable later on and atlas seems the same. Ironically, the problem atlas referred to is already 5 years old.. the last few years have been much more reliable… but of course you are not allowed to call anything other than Honda and Toyota reliable on the internet
I have a 2012 X5 3.5 n55. Got somewhat lucky on the buy - found one 8 years old with 1 owner 64K miles, no air suspension, had to have been kept in a garage. Now has 107k miles. One big repair for all 3 oil gaskets and water pump (about $5k). Replaced cracked coolant tank myself. If you buy one of these, assume those items will need to be done. Everything else pretty normal maintenance. Assuming I’ll need to replace Vanos in the future, but no issues there yet. Love the car. Again, if you buy one of these that has depreciated a lot, expect to spend some money on repairs.
Unacceptable when dishonesty and unreliability is the model of a company. Hoping to maintain forgiving customers. Shameful. Thank you for sharing your content & research 🇨🇦
Not necessarily, business. Some of these companies know that many sales are short term leases (3 yrs or less). They also have an idea the original owner will tire of the car after a few years and want something new. If the car can make it to that mark with little or no problems, then it could be seen by that owner as being a reliable purchase. The subsequent owners are the ones that would then be "screwed" if the car is resold. Case in point, Dodge Challenger and Charger (esp Hellcat models). Do you think you will see many of them 10 or 15 yrs from now?
Had an Audi A6 and it was a money pit. Constant oil leaks, water pump failures, suspension failures. German cars are not made well. It always seemed to come down to poorly made parts that involved plastics/polymers. Or rubber parts.
Yes sir! I made a huge mistake in suprising my with with a beautiful sleek A6 wagon. It was mechanically totaled within 5 years and Audi would do nothing. My wife was not a complainer and never asked for anything expensive. My own stupidity. And when she was having to miss events for our daughters because yet another failure on that heap of excrement. I dumped it. Bought a new Outback and never looked back. Never another German car in my garage 😄
Problem is with inflation, labor cost ,cost of parts and manufacturing they can’t put expensive parts in these cars and make a profit selling them 40 grand.
Sad that this kind of information does not get around to many people. So many people have no idea about the reliability issues plaguing many European brands like range rover, jaguar, vw group etc and ofcourse hyundai kia.
Thank you, the best we can do is share it on our social media platforms so it helps others. Like you mentioned its sad when people make the wrong choices and buy a bad car.
Bought my first car in 1973 ,a Chevy Nova ,6 cylinder automatic, only option…..rear window defroster. The day I got it I had rust proofing, and put on radial tires. Car is still on road all original power train with NO major repairs . Currently 788,217 km ……how is that for reliability
Our 2015 BMW X5 35i has been one of the most reliable vehicles we ever owned. We had extended warranty on it and never really ended up using it. Oil changes every 5000km. The car has 165,000km BTW No problems !!!! A couple of my friends have this vehicle too (2014-2018) no issues. In the market good ones that are 2014 with 100,000km plus are no less than $25,000CDN in the market, not bad for a 8-9 year old vehicle !
I would not give the german car manufacturers any of my money. Period. My 84 Volvo 240 serves me well. Shame came out of all that so called german ingenuity.
‘16 3 series with the “dreaded” n20. Maintain myself, oil changes and all other fluids like clockwork. Other preventative maintenance and changing out failure prone parts like charge pipe and plastic coolant flange. Just passed 90k miles and has been an absolute pleasure and joy. No issues.
I sold high end luxury cars for 20 years. Mostly Japanese cars however I did move to Jaguar for a short while. They had 5000 unadvertised rebates on some of the entry model units. Hated selling those junks. I preferred the early Infinities and Lexus models.
Lexus a BMW wanna be and about the only car that depreciates faster than a BMW Japanese car compared to European luxury it's a no contest European all the way I've been driving BMW since 1984 I've got over 160,000 out of all but my e12 which wasn't BMW'S fault but after I rebuilt it in my own repairshop that engine gearbox combo was still going after 440,000 kilometres on the odometer the one I have now an E60 550i with 247,000 kilometres on it Remember the X5 is made in the USA
@@leonardgmiller8924 your saying Lexus depreciates faster then bmw? That’s incorrect i will give the Germans the edge on driving dynamics but Lexus is just as much a luxury car and when time is money it doesn’t matter how much money you have who wants to spend a day or more in a dealership or stuck on the freeway way to a important meeting
Water pump issues seem to be a common problem with Volkswagens, regardless of the year. I had water pump issues with my 2002 MK4 Golf earlier this year as well.
I have a Giulia, no visits to the shop thus far, knock on wood. I find it funny you went to a Model 3. That thing is notorious for being in the shop. Couple friends of mine have them and so far they’ve been in the shop multiple times compared to my zero visits with my Giulia. You should have chosen a 330i, as it is a direct competitor and similar performance. Large bmw dealer network, and long history platform, 3 series has been around for sooo long. It’s luxury brand so it has its gremlins too but better than Model 3 forsure. Mine is a 2020 so most gremlins have been “sorted out”, so I’ve been told. We’ll see how the next couple years go.
I raised my eyebrow at his mode 3 suggestion as well. I also have a Giulia, it's a 2022; I only have 4500 miles on it so I don't expect any issues but I did purchase it in the hopes that they have all the bugs sorted out now. My alternative to it (the car I had prior) would be a Kia Stinger, on the basis of rear wheel drive driving dynamics and slick styling. I will say the Kia is a little more buttoned up interior-wise than the Giulia but it's not nearly as fun or magical.
This is why the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord are Kings of reliable cars. A rapper was criticized for buying his younger sister a Toyota Camry for her freshman year of college. How many rappers and sports stars from MTV cribs still live in those mansions and own those cars.
Hey, dude! I've watched around 11 of your videos. You're awesome. You share some great wisdom. Whenever I can I try to watch your videos. You've earned my subscribe and notification on. Hyundai - the worst piece of trash someone can ever buy.
My family has the 2015 X5 sDrive (which looks almost identical to the one in the video). We got it in 2019 with only 17k miles, & we've had it for the past 3 years with only one problem which the dealership remedied for us that didn't affect driveability, & now it has almost 50k miles on it. But it's still running strong for now
50k reliability is a pretty low bar. Own some Toyota products for some time and your 50k bar will raise to 150-200k. I’m not surprised when I see Toyota products with 350k any more.
I changed my computer chip for a tuned performance chip. My Hummer ran and shifted much better. The only real problem I ran into is that you must replace the radiator with OEM. Example is it can't handle after market radiator and the temp gauge doesn't work correctly. If you want to brake really good...I added drilled and slotted rotors with steel brake lines which helped brake so much better. Sometimes it only takes a few extra things added to make it work better for you.
I own two Hummer H3s. 2007 Hummer H3 and a 2009 Hummer H3T. Nothing to report. They are fine and in good conditions. I am following your advise. Maintenance them yourself and they will last longer than 5 years.
Don't buy Acura. I leased Acura RDX 2019 a brand new and it had so many problems. There was a lawsuit against RDX 2019 and it was proven in court that the car gear shifting had lots of problem making the car unsafe in most cases. Acura lost and had to pay up a massive amount of money. As soon as my lease expired I returned the car and get an Lexus.
It's been a while since I've seen a Hummer of any sort on the road. Great video, lots of useful info. Not just which cars are trouble, but why they're trouble which can be helpful in deciding, "Can I use this car as a daily or will it be a sunny weekend thing only?"
@@pmscalisi Of course that has something to do with it, but even when Hummer was still around, they weren't something you'd spot daily, even the cheaper H2 and H3 models. Now that time and the elements have had their way with them, these over priced unreliable vehicles are even more scarce unless your name is Arnold.
I test drove an H2 in 2002 when they first came out might have been 2001 I was college I got a Honda element instead it was less money I leased it under $200 a month
I've owned two Jags over the last 6 years and i have not had a single issue. However, my wife owned a m sport X3 during the same time and that thing had issues galore. I'd take JLR any day over a BMW.
I say the Giulia got off better than normal in this video. I haven't had any major issues with my 2020 model. I was considering replacing my Giulia with an M340i (because the access to service centers is an issue in my area), but man, this car is just so fun to drive. The main reason for me to get rid of it is that the ECUs are locked out on these models 😭
What can I say? One great video follows another. This one, you follow through with vehicles of similar type, far more reliable. And Lexus is a great referral!
Why the obsession with exhaust tips? That is one part of a car that I never look at. But I agree-spending $100,000 on a car (when it drops to $20,000 value in 5 short years) is simply insane-of course, most who drive them lease them and write them off as a business expense. Cars should be built like houses-you can keep then running forever.
Then car companies would make less or no money! How do you think they stay afloat? Bc of these tactics! I mean they should make them reliable to avoid frequent trips to the dealerships who are owned independently from the manufacturer
Where’s the green Acura that is in your thumbnail? I just came to see what bad things you had to say about Acura but you actually said some good things about it. Thanks.
Just looking at older cars in my area there's a common theme - Japanese. You will see older domestic trucks, but that's about it. Other than that, old Camrys, Corollas, Tacomas, Accords, Civics everywhere (and sometimes an old Subaru).
@@rorycalhoun1126 I agree, but only in my 60s. Till then ... life is too short to drive boring cars 😆. I've had my three-car combo for several years and counting: Jaguar XF sedan (X250, LCI), BMW 6 Series coupe (E63, LCI) and Mazda MX-5 roadster (NC1).
Lol love your vids , you should change your intro to “ life is too short to drive junk cars “ . Great content and I’m in Edmonton too lol , know the places you go to lol
your vids just made there way into my browser column and im glad they did. i like your style, the tell it like it is backed with the pertinent info and details. based on my vehicle ownership, over a hundred in my 40 driving years, you have been right on the money on vehicles i have owned and the vehicles i have seen on your videos and what your information about them is. thanks for the vids and the heads up to us all on the overall reliability and service costs.
Thank you very much John I really appreciate that. As an independent channel I value the truth I can share with little outside influence. We really do need more of this. Welcome to the channel and hope you have a great weekend.
I have a 2014 Mazda CX9 with 72k and no issues, just wear and tear, and regular maintenance. Along with a 2011 CX7 155k, 2001 Miata 125k, still going strong 💪.
The Monteros were the best cars we ever owed! Ended up get a 2009 6 cylinder Outlander and it was just as reliable and got much better gas mileage. We've owned six or seven Mitsubishis and all of them were exceptionally reliable. That being said, I'd stay a way from anything with a CVT.
@@shmerd1 That was a great story, that you had great luck with your Mitsubishi vehicles. It is the best brand ever, compared to Toyota and Honda. CVT transmissions are always problematic.
I think it's embarrassing & quite sad that these automakers who have been in the business for at least 50-100yrs but they still can't get it right is pretty sad! It's amazing to me that respectable automakers would even stamp their badge of approval (nameplate) on some of these mechanical nightmares! I personally would be ashamed to have my name applied to something that was less than acceptable! But look at their vehicles in other world markets and you'll see better quality parts & materials! Now why is that???
It's engineered obsolescence. Basically, the German business model is to get customers in the door with the latest and greatest tech which fails in a few years so they can sell you a new one or you spend thousands on service.
I have a 2011 X5 50i that bmw put a new engine and turbos in it. With a couple of mods, I’m able to to run it cooler than stock and so far no issues 3 years in.
@@ECPP they definitely upgraded the internals - like you said, many plastic parts, the strive to keep it running hot to save fuel economy added to the failures of that first generation N63 design
WRONG about the H3----yes the 5-cylinder version was bad, but the V-8's were great. You dont see too many because they brought it out too late, and parts are hard to get. The H3 V8 was one of the best off road. Jeep should have bought Hummer, and made these with the 5.7 Hemi......
You advised against an Alfa Romeo, but you suggested a Tesla as an alternative. I'm not so sure that Tesla will last five years either. IMO, for reliability get a Lexus IS300/350. Or a used Acura TL.
Considering how ugly Teslas are, I was thinking the same thing. I guess they were only looking at the speed and handling of it, rather than looks or build quality.
I owned two Alfa Romeo cars, and they have been nothing but reliable. Bashing a car that you don't own or you have heard second account of people who have lemons should be the basis for an opinion.
I have two H3s. One 2007 H3 and the 2009 H3T. They are not perfect but they are giving me good service. Regular maintenance makes a lot of difference. I can fix them myself. Old school. No crazy technology. Not a problem.
LOL...I have 2011 Jag XJ 5.0 SC with 100K miles, and 2017 Alfa Giulia Ti with 52K miles and both run like butter. Just came home from lunch in the Jag----water pump died at 8 years, engine fan gave out a few months ago. That's it in almost 12 years. 🙂 On a macro level I can't disagree, but I've learned there really are very few unreliable cars, only unreliable owners.
I have a Jaguar XJL. It is a 2012 model, and I haven't spent much on it. Transmission oil cooler failed early in my ownership, and I ended up with coolant in the transmission. It would intermittently shift a little hard. Had my independent flush it twice, and then after driving for a few weeks, it was as good as new. That ZF transmission is great. Other/older transmissions would have needed a rebuild after getting coolant in them. I have had the typical coolant leaks also, but it hasn't really cost me that much. Granted, like you, I don't have the 3.0 liter 6 cylinder mentioned in the video, but the 5.0 liter 8 cylinder. So that might be a factor. Using an independent rather than the dealer, and living in a place with cheaper labor than the US helps. Labor will often be much more than the parts in the states. Now my 2008 Porsche Cayenne is a different story. I have spent more on maintenance than what I paid for it 3 years ago.
You should add Chevy Silverado 2016 up. I learned the hard way GM is using plastic parts in their engines, transmissions, fuel filter, etc. It’s a damn shame. GM used to make one hell of a truck.
A good word to describe Tesla is ARTIFICIAL...Just like driving a powerful Electric fork lift... It even has that same wine when you take off from a standstill letting it go.. Regardless of how fast they can go a Tesla is gutless and soulless to anyone that likes demands a combustion engine ..
@@charlesjackson1700 Most people just want to drive to work & back home nothing more nothing less, spending more than 50K in Gas powered engine is not worth it.
@@Random-yq1wu So you think spending $50,000 on an electric car is ?.. If anything electric cars should be cheaper. There's nothing to them they are nothing but a bunch of batteries and electric motors..and it is gutless as a blow up doll. Disposable vehicles after 7 or 8 years.
@@Random-yq1wu $20,000 is going to buy you a car with 70,000 miles and six or seven years old. 30,000 will only buy you a base model. I would not want a tesla. They are full of mechanical bugs and glitches They on the list of the worst cars you can buy.. I would consider buying a hybrid that had gas and electric.. not to hike up on a plug-in hybrid electric / gas . But never no battery powered car. You just as well have a windup car. The average new car SUV are near $50, 000 and much higher. An upper trim Toyota Tundra is in the 67,000 range. The hybrid gas capstone is in the range of 81 to 83,000. Inflation is terrible and it is not getting any better.
I have a 2009 Mitsubishi Lancer GTS. The only reason why it has 176k miles is it's a manual transmission and I keep checking the oil level. Still, it is a champ compared to these cars! 😅
I had a 2010 Lancer GTS Sportback with the CVT. I had the CVT serviced every 30K. My nephew has it now - so far so good. In a dozen years it hasn't had anything but regular maintenance - no repairs. I don't know how many miles he has on it now though. But yeah, simple reliable car.
It sort of depends on how long you plan to keep it. The detuned B58 in that machine is currently the best and most reliable BMW engine but with time repairs can still get a tad pricey, not too mention the replacement batteries will have a limited life and there was a recall on the batteries for awhile. I would just follow up on the current recall
Good job,,,,Thanks,, ( I drive a Ford Tempo 3L V6 OHV).. I got 503K km in it original and still runs like new....( yes I changed radiator and alternator and those 5yrs interval parts but other then that it is a GOOD CAR)...AT whines a little but no slipping...( you have to know how to drive AT car to last long)...
You have to buy two Range Rovers one to drive whilst the other ones being repaired and in Australia we have sain you can take a Range Rover to the outback but you take a Toyota Land Cruiser if you want to cone back
Have had Audis for years the don’t bother that much very reliable. Own a Q7 for 8 years only had a water leak that I corrected easily and a sensor other than that very happy with it.
Very nice...you never put the car down.........just the issues very well explained that anyone can understand...............then if you want to buy a donkey is up to you..............excelent job...thanks for your info......................
As regular brands 1. Toyota 2. Honda 3. Mazda 4. Subaru 5. Kia 6. Hyundai As a luxury brand 1. Lexus 2. Acura If Suzuki and Mitsubishi had better vision of future, probably we would see them competing with Toyota and Honda in terms of quality and style of look.

I was taught in the early 80s when I started driving, when you started having problems with water cooling,, replace everything, so for the last 40 years when I start having problems I replace everything, and guss what, I don't have any problems. It's called ,,, preventive maintenence.

One of my favorite channel on RU-vid, am thinking of buying the new Hyundai Santa Fe or Kia Sorento with the new 2.5 turbo engine, what do think about it would the turbo engine and wet dual clutch hold up reliability both Santa Fe and Sorento? Pls reply
hey man thanks to your advices i decided to buy a bmw with b58 engine. do you think that engine is more suited for SUVs or maybe a smaller car like a 3 series or even 2 series coupe? thanks!
It doesn't matter what engine you got. Your biggest mistake was buying a BMW. When that plastic craps out you gonna be paying up the vazu. You should have gotten a Mercedes or Audi or even Ww
Seems like it would be fine in the suv you got enough torque to get out of your own way and with mild mods you can make it quick af. The B58 is an amazing engine can't wait to get a 340 so I can finally own one
