This works! I accidentally ordered the display port adapter instead of HDMI, so if you're wondering if it works. I've seen a few comments about the displays being mirrored after install. You just have to go back to system preferences, open displays, and deselect the mirror displays option. I need 3 displays for home office so this is a big help, thanks!
Just ordered my stuff, downloaded and installed my display link software. Now I dont have to switch my airpods from my apple tv to my mac. I can have everything running off one device and you Sr have made my life super functional. Standing Ovation :D
Thanks for doing the research and making a video. One thing that would really make it helpful is a diagram of different configurations. You mention different options in the video but it's very difficult to follow and figure out. Thanks in advance.
Man this is so helpful. never though this is even possible.

Thank you for all your work, really excited to get my second 4k external back up on a macbook pro M1. It was the only "downgrade" from a 16incher and now it's gone. Thank you
hi so could you elaborate how you connected 2 4k to your m1 ?

@@MrMFD4043 hey Márcio um gonna follow this guide and should be ordering a display link adapter, high quality 4k 60hz over usb A. First monitor will be usb c directly to an lg w850k, the second will be usb c- hub with usb a (hyperdrive) - hdmi second screen. I'll update here when I get everything from the Amazon uk to portugal sometime next week. Look for a video running 6 monitors.
If you have a tv with wifi you can connect that one with the Airplay screen option (up 1080p) and another monitor with an usb to hdmi adapter for 4k or more. It works for me. Just discovered it. Macbook pro m1.
Just a heads up, as of current, the DisplayLink driver is only compatible with up to 4 additional displays, and it does not support screen rotations or, clamshell mode (where the MacBook Air/Pro is closed and you use the external displays). DisplayLink displays also have limitations in macOS for protected content, and so if you play that you may need to disconnect all DL connected displays. If you use the Thunderbolt 3 for multiple displays, make sure it's a Thunderbolt 3 adapter, and not USB-C. USB-C to multi-display mostly use MST (Multi-stream transport) which macOS does NOT support. If you're uncertain, ask the maker of the USB-C solution if MST is used for multiple displays or not.
last night I was really afraid that there won't be a work around for the displays but you somehow did it, I can finally be at ease knowing it will be possible to add monitors in the future!!
Great video but do you just have a diagram somewhere? That would be so much quicker than me trying to follow this and write everything down. Also, you mention the 3rd display is connected via USB 3.0 but it has HDMI or DisplayPort ports, so does that mean you're going HDMI to USB 3.0 to the DisplayLink, and then DisplayLink goes to the last Thunderbolt port?
Yes they are! I've tried running HomePods with the Mac before and it doesn't work that great to be honest... you can airplay all of your audio and that works well but stereo doesn't work
Thanks for doing this. I had this exact idea last night but haven’t located my Displaylink adapter. I did get one of the Air M1s so as soon as I find my DL adapter I’ll give this a run. I believe it is the USB 3 version as well.
Yes. It works. I have one internal monitor. Two external monitors. And one Sidecar’d iPad. One of the externals is run thru the DisplayLink UsB3 adapter; the other via HDMI thru a dongle. One weird thing. One external is rotated vertically (HDMI) and Mac wants to change the resolution to 720. The only way I can get hi-res is option clicking scaling. And it seems to want to default back to 720 (adding Sidecar for example will switch it back to 720.) Haven’t really stressed the system yet but it does seem to work.

Ruslan Tulupov Perfect thanks for the answer. Do you know if this limitation of Apple has hardware or software reasons? So would it be theoretical possible that more screens are supported after an update?
Hey Ruslan, Your presentations are great and most helpful. I just purchased a 2021 24"IMAC M1. I want connect it to my early 2009 IMAC to use as a second screen. It is running El Capitan 10.11.6- the last IOS update available to that machine. Is this possible? If so, can you provide a step by step? Also, do I need new cables, etc. I know this is a lot. I truly appreciate any help you can provide. Best, Michael
Nice work. But technically, you have added an external graphics card. The DisplayLink has a graphics chip in it that the MacMini can use for a third display. So, while technically you're running more displays off the MacMini than spec'd, you've really just added more display cards.
Mr. Ruslan Tulupov. Mega nice Video and instruction and so high great idea. Thank you for all of us which need this! Please help short for my setup: I got three monitors. 1x4k (DisplayPort) and 2x full HD (HDMI) The 4 k I connect with the hdmi to DisplayPort cable and take the output hdmi of MacMini. Please tell what I need for the 2 hdmi monitors. I was thinking about usbc to hdmi cable and the Startech USB 3.0 adapter. Thanks a lot.
Without all thiis fiddling about, I'm still confused. Will the following work: 3840x2160@60hz and 3440x1440@100hz? I mean, by just using a USB-C to DP and the HDMI port?
in case you have an old display and try USB-C to VGA, the Mac Mini only recognizes two displays (1-VGA and 1-HDMI or Thunderbolt), also if you use USB-A to HDMI (it only will recognize 2 Monitors as well)
Hi, great workaround. Could you make a short video with Activity Monitor GPU and CPU history windows open to see the performance while using the 3 displays? Thank you!
Thanks for the great video and instructions! After just becoming a new user of MacBook Air M2, one issue troubling me is that I can only set up 3 external monitors after using Displaylink. Even when I plug in the 4th monitor using the original USB-C port, one of the 3 external monitors will then become inactive (black screen). So I can use maximum 3 external monitors. In this situation, do you have some trouble shooting tips/ advices to set up 4 monitors if possible? Thank you so much!
How is the setup configured? It might be possible you need more bandwidth to be able to run more screens. Even though the port is USB C, you might a Thunderbolt Hub to get all of the screens working.
@@RuslanTulupov Thanks a lot for your timely advices! As you pointed out, I guessed probably bandwidth could be an issue. Currently I am just using a common USB C port (Novoo USB-C 11 in 1). In combination use with Displaylink I can only connect 3 external monitors as mentioned above. When I use my Windows PC, the same Displaylink can connect 4 monitors. Could you inform what Thunderbolt Hub you are using? What is your recommendation? I am not a high-end Tech user, my main usage is to remotely connect to my computer at office during Work From Home, multiple monitors definitely help. Also one more thing annoying me, when remote to my PC at the office, I found an obvious delay in displaying the movements I performed on the remote PC. When using my Windows PC to do the same, I did not observe such obvious displaying delay. From your knowledge, Is this also due to bandwidth? Any suggestions? Many thanks!
Hi mate, Great video. I have an M1 Mac Mini (2020) edition. I have two apple cinema displays connected through the HDMI and one USB C port with an adapter. Can I use the the other USBC port for a third Apple Cinema Display? Cheers!
I am in a church setting with about 6 monitors, I am using a Mac mini M1 with 24" dual monitors, 1 120" projector, 2 50" Phillips TVs being used as monitors 43" samsung TV. When I used the Epson 980 power lite, the 120" screen flickers constantly. Any special setting needed, adapter or switcher? The distance from the Mac Mini and the projector screen is about 100 Ft. Current cable connection setup: 100 FT HDMI to Sewell direct 5 port switcher, then to dual HDMI to USB C adapter.
Thank u And is 8 RAM enough to be used in the development of Flutter applications? about 5 years? And I want to make the M1 a desktop with a 120Hz or 165Hz display, keyboard and mouse.. Will the 8 Ram have some problems? Or better to buy 16 Ram?
Awesome video. So I have 3 27" Apple Thunderbolt Displays. What do you think is the best way to make this work? I'm assuming that daisy chaining them via Thunderbolt 3 Adaptor won't work? Or has anyone tried? Really want to pull the trigger on this and dump my MacPro for video editing. Appreciate any help here.
Followed this tutorial before when buying my mac mini and it gave me hope!😀 My HDMI port is used up for a screen, one of my thunderbolt ports is used as a video input from a video switcher. I have one more thunderbolt port open. Can I add a USB C to HDMI adapter to get an extra display? P.S. I have a pluggable dock that gives me 3 extra HDMI monitors that work perfectly.
Thank for that amazing Video. What do I do, if Displaylink won't show up in the Launchpad? Downloaded the latest 5.2.1. The only thing in the Displaylink Folder on my Mac is the uninstaller.. don't know, what went wrong, tbh.. thanks for responding.

What resolutions are your 4 monitors running at? My mac mini (intel version) is currently driving three 4k monitors and I was wondering if I could add a 4th 4k monitor.
hello I'm from Brazil. Good morning. I have a MacBook Pro M2, also a Dell Universal Docking Station - UD22, and a DH07 - Docking Station. In total I have five monitors plus the MacBook. Of the 5 monitors, three are working individually and two are mirrored. These two that are mirrored, can I place them individually? I would really appreciate it if you responded to me. Thank you very much.
But what you don’t mention is that you need to reboot the system every time you want to use it. Every time you turn on the Mac mini you need to reboot the adapter and run again the displaylink manager. The adapter doesn’t turn on by itself like any other adapter, you need to reboot it. If I’m wrong “please help me” how to run it the right way.
Great vid thanks for taking the time! Just wondering/making sure that even if I download DisplayLink to the Mac, I can only use 1 HDMI in the MacBook Pro with M1? I'd need a docking station? Do you have a recommendation on docking station?
Nope, I just used a station for convenience. One HDMI is supported by default but you can connect up to four more using DisplayLink. I just used the station to add USB 3.0 ports and you can use any sort of adapter or hub 🙂 Diagram of using a USB C Hub: drive.google.com/file/d/1WWp678TgWMnPlqdmQl8eNAeA1vNjKc5c/view?usp=drivesdk Links: docs.google.com/document/d/1rLYvhUvsZ4oeRbPyHmuy-Bd6DYzVoJfIR-76yD0v-j8/edit
I’ve got another experiment for you. Can you try to connect two thunderbolt displays on a Mac mini m1? I tried with the following configurations 1st monitor TB2 >TB3 adaptor (works) 2nd monitor: mini DP adapter to display port then another adapter, DisplayPort to hdmi. and haven’t had any luck.
I'm glad to know this is possible but I'm not sure I followed the set up completely. Are your second and third monitors connected by DisplayPort cables to the StarTech adapter connected by USB 3.0 to the Mac Mini?
Hi ! I need your help! I am try to connect Mackbook Pro 2018, Mac mini and Air to 1 Hp monitor but I can't. Please help me beacus I'm dentist is my first time to try it. I have Station Doc, 1 DisplayLink with HDMI, cord Type C with HDMI and Portable type C with HMDI but I 'm confuse.
What kind of hub/dock connector are you using? We have a Belkin 11 to 1 sent by our work we are trying to make work. Currently the monitors are an Apple Thunderbolt display with a thunderbolt to usb c adapter, and and an LG with a USB-c connection. It appears that we need adapters as the only display ports available on the dock are vga/display port and hdmi. Also, the DisplayLink manager application will not open from the desktop, it is downloaded, but I cant access any management screens...is that because the monitors are not yet connected with the right cable adapters via the dock? Would you recommend getting rid of the Belkin dock in favor of another? Thanks
Has anyone found a work around for the 2020 MacBook Pro with the M1 16GB memory and 2TB SSD... Bought a top of the line monitor I thought that year and in less than a couple months it was trash. I have a 32" XDR Pro Display but don't want to trash that MacBook Pro because this particle model for some reason doesn't want to function.
i purchased the one you have linked in the description and followed all the steps. I have two monitors a 4k monitor and a 2569x1440. For the 4k monitor, I connected that directly from hdmi and I use the pluggable to connect my 2560X1440 monitor. When I connect it through pluggable, it only shows the max scaled dimension as 1920x1080 and not the max resolution it supports (2560x1440) but if I connect it via regular hdmi there is no issue. Any thoughts on what might be causing that?
@@RuslanTulupov You are correct. I didn't realize that Displaylink is a real company in Silicon Valley and the drivers are for their chips that are in the products you recommended. I was worried that this was a thing like Purge Wrangler. Thank you!!
@@willvazquez3218 The DIsplayLink Manager application generates virtual screens to the OS. The Screen recording is used to record those virtual screens, then, re-direct the recording out to the physical video port(s) on the DisplayLink product. Good afternoon, can someone help me with the macbook pro m1, I have been unable to connect two screens, does anyone know how I can do it? Thank you very much
I have the same questions. I have 2 monitors that I need to connect to my MacBook M1 and I’m still confused on what cords I need? Thanks for any responses ✌🏻
There were a few testers out there who have confirmed that only HDMI+ using one of the TB3 ports works :-( No adapters over Thunderbolt and this was the next best option
Do we have to have at least one displaylink adapter? Or can this work via two other types of adapters like using two different anker adapters that have hdmi ports? Thanks
Thanks for the tutorial! Does this work with USB 2.0 or just 3.0? I have an HDMI to USB 2.0 adapter and want to make sure before purchasing anything else when I get my Mac
if the computer is not used for some hours, when waking it, the external display via thunderbolt to hdmi adapter has to be removed and RE-inserted for it to work.
Thank you so much for making this awesome video! My situation is a little different. I would use my MacBook pro 2016 with my 27" iMac as a display using Thunderbolt 2 to USBC and hit Command F2. Now i bought the MacBook pro M1 13" and when i installed the cables to my 27" iMac and hit Command F2 nothing happens??? Is there a way that i can use my 27" iMac as a screen with my MacBook pro M1 13"?
I tried 1 screen HDMI 1screen Thunderbolt 1 screen USB 3.0 to HDMI adapter , but the one with the adapter didn't work... do I have to buy exactly the one you got to make this working ? or any adapter work... because I can't get the 3rd screen
Great video. Can you also display the M1 chip in vertical mode with your docking station display manager and adapters? My docking station display manager only works in horizontal mode with the M1 chip and not in vertical mode, I was told from the docking station company that I have that this feature is not yet available (developed). I currently run 3 screens in vertical mode and 2 in horizontal mode with my old MacBook Air with the intel chip. Please let me know. Thank you.
