In the last video we covered a method of connecting more than two screens to your newest Apple Silicon M1 or M2 mac.
Using these adapters you can run up to six displays on a Mac Mini, or up to five displays connected to Apple Silicon laptops (the included screen counts as one).
I have not tested Sidecar with this but if iPads count that's up to seven screens.

Those USB A to 'video connector' adapters do have a basic GPU in them, which is why they're expensive. The M1 and its GPU aren't doing any work with those there.

Here's an impressibe tidbit: DisplayLink Manager 1.1.0 (91) , as far as I can tell the latest version, is compiled for Intel. Once we get this to run natively on ARM and not through Rosetta 2 performance should be even better.

@AC-ik2qq

if you go to the displaylink driver download page for mac, and you open "release notes" for the recent release (1.4 and 1.5beta) and you go to section "C.1 Changes in 1.3 release", it says "Added native support for Mac using the Apple M1 chip with new universal binary" so I think that would mean they updated it for ARM architecture... i think 🤔

Boy-o-boy.. I've been scouring the internet for this kind of display connectivity video like Mad Max. Never have I ever found more useful information than this one. Thumbs up & Subscribed and additionally ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. I would like to ask a question based on specific requirements. How do I connect the following display unit with MacBook pro 16 inch (highest spec) or current M1 chip mac mini or M1 Macbook pro 13 inch or future M1 MacBook pro 16? And all need to run 4k 60hz minimum (including 5k2k with it's best resolution at 60hz). Suggest additional egpu unit if necessary. (Budget not taken into account) Total 4 Display units = [(LG 34 inch 5k2k monitor * 1) + (Dell 27 inch 4k monitor * 2) + (Another LG 34 inch 5k2k or Dell 43 inch *1)] I would really appreciate it if you help me out here. Thanks.
@RuslanTulupov
@RuslanTulupov 3 года назад
Absolutely? Sorry, what kinds of ports do the 5K2K displays have? It looks like currently you could do the following for M1: TB3 [1]: LG 5K2K TB3 [2: CalDigit or USB C Hub to USB: USB 3.0 [1]: DisplayLink to HDMI (Dell) USB 3.0 [2]: DisplayLink to HDMI (Dell) Or use the USB 3.0 Dual DisplayPort adapter for the Dells. DisplayLink might not go up to 5K2K so might be worth waiting for eGPU support on Apple Silicon Macs... might be unable to use two 5K2K screens on M1 laptops... On the 16” Intel MBP it’s easier - both 5K 2K displays to TB3 (if that’s the port they use) or all of the displays to an eGPU or USB C hubs. Hope that helps

@@RuslanTulupov In addition to my other reply, .... Can USB 3.0 or HDMI 2.0 run 27 inch 4k monitor at 60hz? If so then how many? I was thinking, From MACBOOOK 16 PRO to two egpu via two TB3. From one egpu TB3 to 5k2k and same egpu's HDMI to one 27inch 4k. And another egpu to another 5k2k or 43 inch 4k and same egpu's HDMI to another 27 inch 4k. Can the above setup run all my four monitors at full capacity or will there be any performance shortages ? Can I Daisy chain two 5k2k OR one 5k2k plus 43 inch 4k as they all have TB3? What kind of performance shortages will that have ? Or any other alternatives you might suggest ? Or any TB3 dock intermediary channel system should I know about? I was hoping one egpu do the job but I doubt any mac supported egpu has all the ports needed.

@@coreschwarz No. I thought about trying this method but frankly it just seems overly complicated and ripe for problems. I love my 3 monitor workflow and didn't want to deviate from that. Thought about buying two 49" monitors and stacking them but??? I was about to spend $20K on the MacPro but with the M1 chip, I just can't commit that much on a Mac that we KNOW will be outdated in 18 months. So for now I literally gave up. If they come up with an upgraded "Mini" with additional support for monitors then I'll buy that in spring to bridge the gap. Or the iMac. I just need to figure something out since my 2013 Mac Pro is crawling now under load in FCPX.

He uses DisplayLink software to enable sending video output over USB 3. Then he uses USB 3.0 to Dual DisplayPort adapters to connect the monitors. The dock is for convenience (and since the M1 Macs have only two ports). I guess you could run up to 4 displays like this without the dock.
@RuslanTulupov
@RuslanTulupov 3 года назад
For the MacBook Air I used port 1 for the one main display that is supported then I used the CalDigit to add USB 3.0 ports. You could also use a USB C Hub to add full-speed USB 3.0 ports if you need less! All of the DisplayLink adapters then went into USB 3.0. The CalDigit also charges, so the USB C hub would need to support PD (power delivery) so you can plug the charger in

Yes ma’am! That’s correct - 4K to DisplayPort and HDMI on the Acer to the USB 3.0 DisplayLink dongle. The CalDigit is not required, it’s there in the video to provide full access to all the bandwidth the Thunderbolt 3 connection offers to ensure full speed across all ports (since I needed so many). This would also work with a USB C Hub with DisplayPort and USB 3.0. Hope that helps :-)

Interesting! Would like to see this flight SIM demo: MAC Mini M1 to three 2K monitors (4K even better) running in ‘extended’ 5760 X 1080 mode or 4K equivalent (ie. Not mirroring) using the Display Link software (if needed) upon the minimalist of component brands used within this video. Should be a breeze for you to demo and/or please send instructions to this address (or better both). (Fav flight SIM here is X-Plane, a $59 downLoad, which runs fine on the M1 Mini.) Thanks!

Months and months for hours on end with no reliability issues. Ever since I discovered this workaround, many people have copied this and many new adapters have been made that are cheaper. Regrettably, the quality has suffered too, of adapters that claim to support displaylink, but don’t do a good job. The linked adapters should have no issues.

Thank you for taking the time to make this awesome video! Very impressive! I had a few questions. I need to run 2-4k 27" spectre monitors at 60 hz resolution using an M1 MacBook Air. I also have the same cal digit hub you are using. I was wondering if one display could be ran natively and 1 could be ran using the STarTech USB 3.0 to dual display port adapter at 4k 60hz. It looks like I can't do that with the MacBook Air according to your video. So my other question is, does the 4k resolution using the StarTech usb 3.0 to dual display port adapter at 4k 60 look as good as running a monitor natively (without Star Tech / display link software) at 4k 60 from the MacBook Air? I'm assuming the native resolution looks somewhat better. I'm trying to decide if I want to have 2 - 4k monitors or just 1 - 4k monitor with better quality. I don't care to take a resolution hit on 1 out of 2 monitors, but I would like to get the best resolution possible out of at least 1 of the monitors. But there may not be that much noticeable difference. I just hate to spend $114 dollars on the Star Tech adapter to find out.

QUESTION: So what I have is a 2020 macbook air (13 inch) running BigSur, a 2012 macbook pro (15.5 inch) running Catalina, and an even older Mac Mini running OS Lion (I think... the last one for the old computer games). I am looking to invest in a switcher, or two, so that I can have multiple computers running on the same set of 2-4 monitors without having to flip cords. I have seen many switchers for two computers, is it possible to create a set up for 3-4 computers, connecting 4 monitors, keyboard and mouse? It would also be acceptable if only one computer (mb Air) used all 4 monitors, and the rest just used two. SECOND QUESTION... I am thinking the upper two monitors could be touch screen (really too high to look up to, but might be nice for tracking to-do lists and calendars while standing and doing other things besides sitting at my desk. Have you attempted adding touch screen monitors to a mac set up? Thanks!

The CalDigit is not required - I used it to add full speed USB 3.0 ports to make sure all the adapters have the full bandwidth available to sustain all of the connections.
