Interesting. I had assumed that oracle stored the data in it's own endian format,regardless of the cpu architecture. Always big endian, for example. Maybe that's not done because of the performance overhead if native endian format and database endian format do not match?

we are at the whim of the operating system here (or the file system)

I didn’t expect that works for SYSTEM isn’t there platform specific stuff like charsets, timezones, mmap advise and similar in there?

Not sure what you're after here - all the RMAN etc commands are path specific anyway. They wouldn't apply to your particular case
