Could be what all future residential projects look like? Pack as many housing units into as little space as possible. This should concern everyone.

My wife and kids live in a house in Canyon Country and when we went to Magic Mountain about a month ago, we decided to head up the road and look at those houses and we were shocked at how terrible those houses and community looked. Also, just as you said, most of those homes have already been sold (mainly to property management companies) and they are renting the units for like 5k a month for a three bedroom which is disgusting. Also, there is another new housing development going up in Newhall right off the 14 near sierra hwy and newhall ave. They are just flattening all of the hills in our beautiful city and stacking them with ugly homes. It's such a disgrace.

I have been keeping an eye on that development as well, the one that you mentioned off of Newhall avenue, very curious to see how they're going to lay out those homes, it looks like it's going to be more conventional? Instead of whatever this thing is above Magic Mountain! Either way, we drove into the development to get a closer look at these homes and talked to a homeowner who bought one of those units in those square boxy looking buildings, he said the cheapest units are selling for $450,000. Evidently this development got pushed through and approved because they said it was going to be affordable and it was going to be environmentally friendly and somewhat carbon neutral!? Sounds like they pulled a fast one like developers tend to do.

Canada's Wonderland had a similar problem. they built way out in the middle of nowhere, so some developers decided to completely surround it in subdivisions and residential areas. Now the park not only has no room to expand, but the people who moved into these new neighborhood filed noise complaints, effectively neutering the parks ability to do firework shows, special events, and overnight charity events. they even petitioned to have the park moved elsewhere.

@@j.tvgl2235 Yeah, back in the mid 90's Magic Mountain's popularity was so big that at one point Newhall Land & Farming Company(the ORIGINAL builders of Magic Mountain)along with the owners of Six Flags at the time had plans to add another 400 acres to the park by turning it into full-fledged destination resort, thus making it 3x's larger than it is now. Too bad they didn't pull the trigger on that project. It most definitely would've been better than the houses going up there now.......what an eyesore.

The is the absolute, 100% future of development (especially in California). It’s a mixed-use community, so in theory, everything is contained in the neighborhood. Walking to shopping, work, etc. With the price of real estate, it’s the only way a developer can justify even building. They got to pack as much in as possible to get a return on investment.

Canadian here: i live in the Niagara region my entire life. when i was young, i'd go to Canada's Wonderland (the countries largest amusement park). it is in a city called Vaughan, a small city 20 minutes out from Toronto. the amusement park was located well away from any civilization, there were no houses or buildings nearby. 20 years ago real estate developers realized the potential for the land and started rapidly growing the city out into the country side. the urban sprawl kept growing until it completely enveloped Canada's Wonderland with developments. 'Nice houses' were built less than 300m from the biggest amusement park in the country. which you'd think might not be a great place to have a subdivisions because of the 17 roller coasters and other noise generators. So the Vaughan community decided to do something about it. They petitioned to have Canada's Wonderland cut their noise by removing their fireworks displays and laser shows, they now have to close the park at 10pm instead of at 12, and they cannot have overnight special events except for the rare charity event that gets city approval. They even (unsuccessfully) petitioned to have the park removed and relocated well out of the area. TLDR: jack-ass developers and city planners shoved houses all around Canada's biggest Amusement park, then complained about the noise and tried to have the park shut.

That kind of growth has been going on for a little while in the I5/126 area. It looks like a lot of it is built on the "European Model. High density, high occupancy, and walkable to services. I didn't see too many services there though. I don't know why any city or county would let something like that be build. The infrastructure can't support it. Water, power, sewer, transit, traffic, they don't know how screwed they are going to be. Once people move in there they will probably start complaining about operations at Magic Mountain. I wonder if there are future plans to shut down the park for good. It's looking pretty sad from the air.

Yep, on the ground in SCV, traffic going north on I5 even outside of rush hour is appreciably worse. Actually bad in both directions and especially through the Newhall Pass. They're having to rewiden and redo a huge stretch of the freeway that they just finished reconstructing two years ago, and that project snarled traffic for the three years it took them to finish it.

As price of land went up this is what developments ended up looking like. The same happened here in Vegas. Originally they were pretty normal with driveways and stuff, then it was the no driveway homes, then the box with (2) 3 bdrm (1) 2bdrm townhomes. Then they said screw the garages and added basically what amounts to apartments and called them "Condos" So the short answer is yes this is the future as so long as land continues to appreciate in value.

Magic Mountain soon to be a valley. When I lived in California I always enjoyed the environment of Magic Mountain (truly is one of the most beautiful and well kept parks I've ever been to) and was glad to see they preserved the landscape, until these developers moved in and ruined it. But this is the politics of real estate now. I live in a (once) quiet outlying community in Queens, NY now and when all the rezoning laws were changed, construction went viral here. @meangene5104
@meangene5104 2 года назад
Thanks for watching and for the question, I do it the old fashioned way, I don't merge it in any technologically savvy way, I literally do a separate voice recording on my computer as I watch the playback and then lay that recorded audio track onto the video stream. Sometimes I have to move it around to make sure it matches up with the images. I'm a total newbie at this and just learned how to do very basic editing like 2 months ago. I recently discovered screen recording apps for your phone. Those are pretty great, so what I might do next time is take that recording, ditch the video which I wouldn't need because the resolution usually sucks, keep the audio and then lay that track down to match the video from the drone, I like that better because sometimes when you're narrating as you're actually flying it's a little more authentic instead of doing the narration after the fact, if that isn't too confusing.

Great footage and thoughts. While it might be a shock to many, this land has been slated for development since at least the 1960s. In 1968 a partnership was formed between Newhall Land and SeaWorld Inc. SeaWorld was looking for a new place to build a park and Newhall Land saw it as a great opportunity to bring people to the area -- And hopefully move there. So, yeah, residential development was a goal of building Magic Mountain in the first place. Honestly I'm shocked it took this long. OMG! The nimbies are gonna lose their shit over the noise. That “development” looks like it has very few open spaces. The traffic issues will be compounded unless they build more roads. Yeah, those houses are gonna be a stinking eyesore. One the positive, I can certainly see attendance going up as locals will take advantage of the park so that’s good. Moreover, Magic Mountain has has historically had issues of understaffing and having local young adults wanting to work there and not just visit as paying guest so hopefully dome of the née residents will fill in the employment gaps that the park has traditionally had. Also, if you take a good look at Disneyland and Knotts on a satellite map, you can also notice the residential areas much closer that you normally would see them at the street level so we’ll see. Hopefully it works out for Magic Mountain.

Surprisingly, you can't hear the park very much from the development. With it being up on a hill, the slope against the park acts as a sound barrier. And then there will be retail development between the park and homes. Plus landscaping. Once all that fills in, the biggest noise will be a Honda civic with loud exhaust going by. Lol. And good point about park staffing. I didn't even think about how this will be beneficial in that way.

Personally think this is a nice break from the dreary cookie cutter suburban sprawl that resides in the single-family zoned Santa Clarita Valley. The closed off private neighborhoods with outlets scattered everywhere and no sidewalks in sight are one of the most depressing things I see when trying to bike around some neighborhoods. It shows how utterly car-centric the SCV and california in general really is. If we supported more efforts to have dedicated bus lanes and improved bike lanes on the giant multi-lane roads scattered throughout the SCV along with greater funding for public transportation rather than expanding highways and roads, maybe we wouldn't have so much traffic since people wouldn't have to get in their car just to go to their grocery store and could instead bike, take buses, maybe even take a local trolly, or could even walk to their favorite stores, though zoning laws related to the separation of single-family homes and commercial centers would also have to be addressed. These packed mixed-use housing districts will help accommodate the crippling housing issue Santa Clarita has, even if the cost to buy is fairly high (its SCV, $450k for a house is, sadly, considered cheap). I will agree with the water usage though, not sure how SCV will be able to support itself with all of these water cuts the county's throwing at us. Though, to be honest, your beautiful green lawns aren't going to be sustainable anyway, the natural landscape of SCV is and will always have a desert climate. It really shouldn't be a surprise that filling an entire valley with single-family homes is completely unsustainable for reducing homelessness. Sorry that your dreams of suburbia can't come true but it's time that we realize that the American Dream ain't so sustainable in California's current economic climate.

Geez, they sold this project to the community promising echo-friendly, carbon-neutrality, sustainability, blah, blah, all those buzz words, and most importantly, affordability. Was this what anyone thought it was going to look like or how much they would cost? I also can't imagine anyone being ok with these esthetics if they knew it was going to look like this. Or they were all smoking crack, or the developers misled them. Maybe they knew they could get away with this by putting it up on the hill where you really can't see it. I'm guessing afternoon traffic on the 5 north through SCV is gonna look like the 14 north to the Antelope Valley. Developers do lie, we've heard them do it at the community meeting at the Mule Farm in Newhall. Said the impact on traffic would be less than 10% and that no units would be Section 8. And with the money in their pocket, they don't have to stay around to deal with the long-term consequences.

This makes me laugh. "Just getting started"? This is the same discussion that people in the SCV have been having since I moved here in '73 when there were 32,000 people living here. Now there are over 400,000 people in this valley. How do you think that happened? After almost 50 years of giant developments, I have no idea how this new one above Magic Mountain is suddenly any different than the ones that now exist up Bouquet, or up McBean, or off Copperhill, or Stevenson Ranch...other than maybe in size. It's still going to be condos, fire stations, schools, retail spaces, single family homes...Paseos, parks & Rec areas... Between Ventura & LA counties, this new area will contain 20,000 new homes. It will include five million square feet of commercial (retail and industrial) space.... And it's just a continuation of exactly the same growth that has been going on since Newhall Land & Farm broke ground in Valencia on Old Orchard in the late sixties.

@@meangene5104 Sure it does. It's just larger (and not even that much), as I said. But what's interesting to me is that suddenly growth in SCV is an issue. It sucks, but it's always sucked. The population here has climbed between 3 and 5% nearly every year for fifty years. All this pearl clutching in the face of the roughly the same growth (now trending slightly less actually) rate that has been happening since the '70s, mostly from the same development company; NL&F. The same thing is happening up in Tahoe (where we have a family cabin) and Reno and Carson River Valley; People buy into the area, make all sorts of disruptive changes, then once they've been there for a few years start getting all irritated about all the "new" development that is happening.

"That's the view of Viper and it looks like it's not in use".... as a train is climbing up the lift... Anyways, I've never looked at that housing development, but man it looks ugly. I'm really wondering though when the houses begin to be bought and sold, how long it will take for the noise complaints to start rolling in. For those who don't realize, those rides do have to be turned on and cycled at night in order to do maintenance. They all have warning sirens to indicate that the power is on, plus you also just have to noise of the trains on the track. I can already see complaints about Superman and Riddlers in particular as they are the loudest rides in the park and closer to the homes. So if the people who want to live there can somehow look past the hideous neighborhood, they'll also have thatto look forward to.

Technically this is not in Santa Clarita it's LA county but it impacts Santa Clarita infrastructure schools etc. When they incorporated the city the county made sure the city ended at the middle of the 5 freeway except where the truck scales are it jogs to the east so the county gets the revenue from the scales. Soon they will develop everything from the 5 to the Ventura county line. Currently Ventura will not allow development along the 126 corridor but sometime in the future it will become too temping and I expect there will be development all the way to Ventura. That’s all that is being permitted today. High density housing. Then our wonderful Gavin Newsom passed a bill doing away with R1 residential letting cities dictate what can, cannot and will be built on a regular 6k square foot lot up to eight units and require no off street parking. So depending on where you live such as where I do in Huntington Beach. We no have a duplex in our single family neighborhood. Another aspect of this bill is California will contribute up to $27,000 of tax payers money to build an MDU, ADU or what use to be called an inlaw suite with no repayment till the property sells if you ever sell. So if the person never sells, that is essentially free money to be able to make money because there is no stipulation that it has to be a family member living in the unit. Then there is the other clause that in some cities such as LA the government will also contribute up to $40,000 of again, tax payer money to assist in rent for “approved” low income renters for long term leases. These renters may be family so it’s just like tax payers paying you to add on to your home and creating income for you even though it’s your family living with you. I believe for every single family dwelling there needs to be six to eight high density units. Ten plus percent of these need to be low income housing supplemented by all the others that will be paying full price or more to pay for this. This all the while they scream DROUGHT, GLOBAL WARMING. So we have no water for these people and they want to build concrete/stucco buildings that heat up in the sun and release that heat at night and pave over every bit of land there is with black top(petroleum based) that too will soak up the heat during the day and be released at night. Zero green belts or large parks with trees. All arid hard scape. The logic of these leftists has left their brains. Look at new schools being built if they do build them at all. Certainly not keeping up with the idea of one to two children per household. Anyway all those new and existing schools also lack grass areas and even remove them to make room for mobile class rooms to absorb the new population. State, county and city planners and engineers are anything but what they call themselves. When challenged at council meetings they quickly shut/shout you down or turn off the mics to quiet you. This can go on and on. Electricity? No new power plants anywhere, they want these people to all drive electric cars that need charging and NO, solar and wind does NOT generate enough electricity to replace coal and oil on the East coast power plants nor oil and natural gas here on the West coast. Democrats are non thinkers. They are knee jerkers without base. Crap! I just remembered. All new construction and new restaurants in LA will have to use electricity instead of gas. So forget about charbroiled burgers and chicken. As I said, the list goes on and on about their bad policies ruining places they are in charge.

Your tone just drips with condescension. So where do you want people to live? You got yours, YOUR tasteful tract home with plenty of space. THAT used to be called "urban sprawl" by people living in mansions surrounded by wooded acres. You use the word "packed" so many times I lost count. Land is expensive and builders don't build housing for free. No doubt it was cheaper when you bought YOUR house. I suppose it's a spectrum. At one end, some believe there should be NO development outside of urban boundaries so as to maximize outdoor spaces. At the other end of the spectrum are those who oppose ANY zoning ordinances and allow people to build whatever wherever. Where do YOU draw the line?
@CC86CA
@CC86CA 2 года назад
This is the issue. People are aghast at dense multi-dwelling communities popping up in places like this, but then they bemoan the exploding homeless population that is a direct result of lack of new housing causing a surge in demand and lack of supply. While these units are certainly not cheap, they at least significantly increase housing inventory in a State where we really need the additional units. 25k new units is not a small amount. There’s also the lack of understanding that real estate prices are absolutely sky high, and the only way for developers to break even or make a profit is to maximize land use. Yes, that means the trade off for new housing units is there are smaller and less parks, no backyards, communal pools instead of individual private pools, and compact architecture.
