Lived in Runcorn from 1976 to 2003. These clips show how much it's changed. I lived in the old town ( New street ) and in the new town ( Brookvale ) and palacefields ( The uplands ) I worked on Astmoor, Curved pcm ( the bucket factory ) from the two pints series.
Sundays are the worst days for any town. All of the shops are closed. I live in Runcorn it's a stunning place full of nature. If you have any hobby whatsoever it is catered for in Runcorn. There are vast areas dedicated to wild life and nature conservation. Canals ,lakes ,a castle, a priory and museum it has a theatre and unlike many places a good few places to drink. The old town is run down but we like it like that because it's what gives it its charm. The chemist is actually one of my most hated buildings. It replaced one of the nicest buildings I've ever seen, and the railing around the outside is all that is left. The entire place is steeped in history.
I used to live 20 minutes drive from Runcorn. For the last 25 years its become very run down, like a lot of 🇬🇧 UK towns. On November 5th i used to crew a fireworks company professional display on the "wall" between the Manchester Ship Canal and the river Mersey. It was a boat ride from Runcorn docks under the Jubilee bridge (the old green bridge in your video) then a ladder scramble upto the wall. Highlight Pyrotechnics used to do a 20£K show every year. I was privileged to do the show for around 7 years back in the naugties. Glad you are feeling a bit better.
Mark enjoy the fresh air good to be out and about again.. Turkish barbers shops rumour has it some are actually Albainians.... anyway another town like most rundown .. and very sad ... see you on your next adventure mark
It's not the best, but it does also have a fresh veg shop, a family butchers, a delicatessen, a very old family run business. 2 guitar shops, frailers have been there 40+ years.. a dart shop that is also family run. Great shop. A book shop, that matches the towns library. A bike shop, a record shop , although it's tatty, people do try. If you get stressed, there is a Buddhist century to visit.
Used to be a vibant little town untill your compatriots from your home town come to live here then Runcorn New Town decided to invest all the money in Widnes
Our son lived in the decks near the river for about five years and I liked its proximity to Wetherspoons,as least the town has one.Sadly all towns are going downhill and something needs to be done about it.Its like the councils don’t care about town centres.
Sadly Runcorn has been this way for the past ten years and getting worse as the weeks go by. New town isn’t any better in all honesty. As other people have commented, Widnes gets the better treatment from our council - and all the good shops go there. Our councillors have killed Runcorn. Literally killed it.
Please come to Runcorn new town its beautiful ha ha ha I think not, It has a Shopping City!!!!!!!!! Escalaters permanently bust lifts bust all the time in turn. Buckets all over to catch the rain comming in from the leaking roof. Wow it has one of your Turkish barber ton of charity shops a ton of eating places phone shops thats about it. You have red painted bridges that flood & they take you over to Asda side the litter is disgusting on the other red bridge lidl side. This shopping city was brill when I first came here tons of great shops now its a dump filthy with litter folk chuck on the floor even though the bin is adjacent, You gotta come & visit

If you do visit and find an odd escalater working go down to the ground level out side we have The Trident Park it is an out side shopping bit. Much better. Has TK Max lidl Aldi etc. Also stand with your back to TK Max cross over and turn right. There is a brill coffee camper where Garry has his coffee shop. Its good and a little social bit. I live in Runcorn and i must say it is mostly kebab shops and barbers. Charitys shops and pubs. Cant believe the swimming baths shut down and the cinema's. The shopping city has gone down hill aswell. Rent is to high or so ive heard. I'd like see runcorn thrive like i know it can. It sad how it is at the minute. Its run down and nothing for kids to do
I love your video's Marky and I'm sure Runcorn is a lovely town in many ways but your painting a very drab, depressing picture of the North of England.
All the money since we became Halton has been spent in Widnes to become a thriving shopping centre it looks like they are going to turn Runcorn into homes the high street which the medical centre is on is being redeveloped and are putting flats just up the road and the building which you described as a BT tower or something is flats and either side of it are residential homes which are being demolished and turned into a water front ? . It’s drab and run down I agree the reason being is the new bridge bypasses the old town and it’s quicker now to go to Widnes for most of the residents of Runcorn with the central express way being joined straight to the bridge and all major and minor roads lead to it . They’ve closed the old town baths which I’ve a feeling will be developed into residential properties and are building a new leisure centre in Widnes . They are wrecking the old town They were warned about this by a local business man Gary Shaw RIP Gary who’s family run the butchers in the town ,
